Personality

Harghent the Still, the Sixth General of the Twenty-Nine Officials of Aureatia, is a man defined by his unwavering sense of honor and commitment to duty. Despite his dedication, he is often mocked as the “Wing Clipper” for his preference for low-risk, mundane missions, such as wyvern extermination, which are seen as beneath the stature of a general. Nevertheless, Harghent is a highly trained military officer with extensive experience in anti-air combat, a skillset that reflects his meticulous approach to warfare. His unyielding ambition drives him to seek greater power and renown, even as he grapples with his own self-awareness regarding his lack of exceptional talent or intelligence. In situations where his values are at stake, Harghent demonstrates remarkable courage, charging into danger without hesitation.

Harghent maintains a complicated relationship with Alus the Star Runner, whom he regards as his sworn rival. Their history dates back to Harghent’s younger days when he encountered and briefly sheltered the mutant wyvern. While their initial connection was one of mutual respect, Harghent’s feelings soured over time as he learned of Alus’ later accomplishments, fueling a deep and persistent jealousy. This rivalry, rooted in both admiration and resentment, underscores Harghent’s internal struggles as he strives to assert his worth among the elite Twenty-Nine Officials. Despite his flaws, Harghent’s determination and adherence to his values make him a multifaceted and compelling character.

Role in the Story

Harghent the Still first appears in Volume 1, leading his soldiers to Tileet Ravine on a mission to slay the wounded dragon, Vikeon the Smoldering. Despite assembling a force of over thirty men, Harghent’s expedition ends in disaster as his forces are effortlessly annihilated by the dragon’s overwhelming power. Cornered and desperate, Harghent prepares to face Vikeon alone, only to be interrupted by the arrival of Alus the Star Runner. Alus engages the dragon in a fierce battle, much to Harghent’s frustration. Driven by jealousy and humiliation, Harghent repeatedly attempts to shoot Alus down during the fight, but his efforts are in vain. After Alus successfully slays Vikeon, the two briefly discuss the upcoming Sixways Exhibition. Harghent challenges Alus to enter the competition but refuses to sponsor him, claiming that glory cannot be won by relying on a wyvern’s strength. Alus accepts this with humility and departs, leaving Harghent to grapple with his frustration.

Following his failed mission, Harghent returns to Mage City’s fortress, where he meets with Hidow the Clamp, another member of the Twenty-Nine Officials. The two clash over strategy, but their argument is interrupted when Taren fires the Cold Star at the castle, signaling the arrival of Lithia’s wyvern army. As the city descends into chaos, Harghent defies Hidow’s harsh rebukes and leaves the fortress to rally the troops. His arrival on the battlefield reinvigorates the beleaguered Mage City forces, who recognize him as a general of Aureatia. However, before he can formulate a plan, Alus reappears and decimates the wyvern army. Although humiliated by Alus’ intervention, Harghent seizes the opportunity to break the siege and lead his forces directly to Lithia.

Upon infiltrating Lithia, Harghent’s forces gain the upper hand after Nihilo the Vortical Stampede annihilates the city’s defensive lines, and Taren’s champions fall to various Shura. Harghent reaches the central hub, where he confronts Regnejee the Wings of Sunset, the enemy commander. Just as he is about to execute Regnejee, Curte of the Fair Skies intervenes, selflessly shielding her friend. Harghent hesitates, moved by her devotion, but this moment of indecision allows Regnejee to counterattack. Before either can finish the fight, Alus intervenes from afar, shooting both Regnejee and Curte through the neck. Overwhelmed by rage and regret at losing his quarry yet again, Harghent collapses in despair.

In Volume 2, Harghent travels to Igania Ice Lake with Lagrex the Butchering Landslide in search of the legendary dragon, Lucunoca the Winter. While Lagrex hopes to prove his strength by slaying the dragon, Harghent’s true aim is to recruit Lucunoca as his champion for the Sixways Exhibition. The harsh and unforgiving environment takes its toll on Harghent, and he begins to doubt the dragon’s existence. However, Lagrex’s persistence leads them to Lucunoca, who greets them warmly and apologizes for her lack of hospitality, much to their astonishment. When Harghent accuses her of cowardice for refusing Lagrex’s challenge, Lucunoca nonchalantly surrenders, expressing her indifference to such contests.

Enraged by her apathy, Lagrex attacks Lucunoca but is effortlessly defeated and gravely injured. Harghent intervenes, shielding Lagrex and expressing his newfound understanding of Lucunoca’s disappointment with the challengers who have sought her out. Sharing stories of Alus the Star Runner’s exploits piques the dragon’s curiosity, and she agrees to accompany Harghent to Aureatia, marking the beginning of a significant alliance for the upcoming exhibition.

Abilities

Although Harghent the Still is considered one of the less prominent members of the Twenty-Nine Officials of Aureatia, he is a seasoned military leader with extensive experience in commanding large-scale operations. During the attack on Mage City, Harghent quickly assumed command of the defending troops, leading them in a bold, albeit reckless, counterattack against Lithia. His willingness to face overwhelming odds with unwavering determination has earned him the respect of notable figures such as Alus the Star Runner and Lucunoca the Winter. While he is often criticized by his peers for his lack of strategic foresight and intellectual prowess, Harghent’s courage and ability to adapt in high-pressure situations make him an invaluable leader on the battlefield.

As a general, Harghent specializes in wyvern extermination, having personally led hundreds of successful campaigns against roving wyvern swarms. His preferred tactics involve a combination of coordinated marksmen and Word Arts users to trap wyverns outside their nests, neutralizing them at range with minimal risk to his forces. This method has proven highly effective throughout his career, cementing his reputation as a skilled anti-air combatant. During Mage City’s siege by Regnejee’s wyvern army, Harghent quickly recognized their tactics and leveraged his prior experience to counter their maneuvers. Later, during the assault on Lithia, he demonstrated his keen battlefield awareness by pinpointing Regnejee’s location amidst the chaos and pursuing him to a spire in the central district.

Despite his advancing age, Harghent remains physically capable, traversing the harsh terrain of Igania Ice Lake alongside Lagrex the Butchering Landslide without faltering. In the anime, he is depicted wielding a sword, while the novels describe him using a musket during his confrontation with Regnejee the Wings of Sunset. His survival of the brutal battle in Lithia, navigating both enemy soldiers and the fires spread by Alus, underscores his tenacity and combat experience.

Harghent also possesses proficiency in Craft Arts, allowing him to forge advanced weaponry from the steel of his homeland. His most notable creation is the Dragon Slayer Ballista, a colossal mechanical bow the size of a horse-drawn carriage. This weapon is capable of firing devastatingly powerful projectiles, designed specifically to pierce the thick hides of wyverns and other large creatures. Harghent can operate the Dragon Slayer unaided, though the weapon requires significant time to reload between shots. This combination of ingenuity, adaptability, and sheer determination defines Harghent’s unique capabilities as both a warrior and a general.
