Haqua du Lot Herminium (ハクア・ド・ロット・ヘルミニウム, Hakua Do Rotto Heruminiumu), is the tritagonist of The World God Only Knows. She is a high-ranking demon and serves as the District Chief of Area 32 in Nagumo City for the Runaway Spirit Squad. As the valedictorian of her class, she was once regarded as one of New Hell’s most brilliant students, expected to excel in her duties. However, despite her academic achievements, she struggles with capturing runaway spirits, making her less competent in the field than her reputation suggests.

Appearance in anime

Haqua was a model student in New Hell, excelling in academics and widely respected by her peers. As the top-ranked graduate, she was expected to be a prodigy in the Runaway Spirit Squad. However, once assigned to real-world missions, she struggled to capture runaway spirits, exposing the gap between her theoretical knowledge and practical abilities.

Her frustration grows when she learns that Elsie whom she once considered clumsy and incompetent has successfully captured numerous spirits while she has failed. This realization makes her resentful and insecure, leading to her initial cold and dismissive attitude toward Elsie.

Despite this, Haqua remains determined to prove her worth, eventually teaming up with Keima and Elsie to battle larger threats. Through her experiences, she overcomes her self-doubt and emerges as a strong and capable leader.

Appearance

Haqua has a tall and slender figure, with long, wavy lavender hair that reaches past her waist. She has sharp purple eyes and often carries a serious or slightly irritated expression, reflecting her strong-willed personality.

She wears a white and dark purple uniform, which includes a high-collared coat with flame-like patterns on the sleeves, signifying her status as a high-ranking demon. She also carries a demon scythe, her weapon of choice, which she uses for combat and spirit-hunting.

Compared to Elsie’s more traditional and cute attire, Haqua’s outfit and appearance exude confidence, authority, and maturity.

Personality

Haqua is intelligent, ambitious, and prideful, often struggling with self-imposed expectations. She initially comes across as cold and competitive, especially towards Elsie, whom she views as less capable. However, this arrogance is actually a mask for her insecurities, as she constantly feels pressure to live up to her reputation as a valedictorian.

Unlike Elsie, who is cheerful and carefree, Haqua is serious, hardworking, and self-critical. She hates failure and often pushes herself too hard, refusing to admit weakness or vulnerability. However, as the series progresses, she softens, revealing a caring and loyal side, particularly towards Keima and Elsie.

Despite her flaws, Haqua is genuinely brave and righteous, showing strong leadership skills and a willingness to protect her friends at all costs. She ultimately learns that true strength is not about perfection but about perseverance and trust in others.

Role in the Story

  • A Struggling Prodigy
Haqua is introduced as a rising star in the Runaway Spirit Squad, assigned as the District Chief of Area 32. However, it is soon revealed that, despite her brilliant academic record, she has failed to capture a single spirit, causing her self-doubt to grow. Her frustration deepens when she realizes that Elsie a student she once considered below her has successfully completed multiple captures. Initially, Haqua refuses to acknowledge her own shortcomings, projecting her insecurities onto Elsie. However, as she spends more time with Keima and Elsie, she begins to accept her flaws and work towards improving herself.

  • Battling the Vintage Threat
As the series progresses, Haqua becomes more involved in the larger conflicts surrounding Hell, particularly in the fight against Vintage, a rogue faction of demons that seeks to restore the old ways of Hell. She defies orders from her superiors to aid Keima and Elsie, proving her independence and strong moral compass. During the Goddess Arc, Haqua becomes a key ally, providing intelligence and direct combat support. She even sacrifices her position as District Chief, choosing to fight for what she believes is right rather than blindly following orders.

  • Resisting the Demonic Corruption
In the final arc, Haqua is branded as a traitor by the demon hierarchy for assisting Keima, leading to her imprisonment in Hell. However, with help from Keima and Elsie, she manages to escape and turn the tide against Vintage, proving herself as a true leader and warrior. By the end of the series, Haqua redeems herself in the eyes of her peers, proving that her strength lies not in flawless execution, but in her unwavering dedication to her friends and her beliefs.
