Hanzō Urushihara

Hanzō Urushihara (漆原 半蔵, Urushihara Hanzō) / Lucifer (ルシファー, Rushifā), is a fallen angel and former Demon General in Hataraku Maou-sama! (The Devil is a Part-Timer!). Once a high-ranking celestial being, he betrayed heaven and sided with Satan’s army in the conquest of Ente Isla. However, he was later defeated by Hero Emilia and nearly perished—only to be secretly rescued by Olba Meyer, a high-ranking member of the Church, who promised to return him to heaven in exchange for helping eliminate the Demon Lord.

After his failed rebellion against Satan (Sadao Maou) in Japan, Lucifer was left powerless and homeless, forcing him to move in with Maou and Ashiya. Instead of working like his housemates, he spends his days lounging around, playing video games, and shopping online, much to Ashiya’s frustration.

Background

Appearance in anime

Lucifer was originally a celestial being in heaven before falling from grace and aligning himself with Satan’s forces in Ente Isla. His reasons for turning against heaven remain ambiguous, though he is shown to harbor bitterness toward celestial beings and the Church.

As a Demon General, Lucifer was a feared and powerful force, wielding immense magic and destructive abilities. However, during the war against the Hero Emilia, he was defeated and left for dead. Olba Meyer, a corrupt high-ranking official of the Church, secretly saved him, convincing him to work together under the promise of restoring his celestial status.

In Japan, Lucifer attempts to defeat Maou with Olba’s help, but their plan backfires, and he is easily overpowered by Maou after the latter regains some of his magic. With nowhere else to go, Lucifer reluctantly becomes part of Maou’s household, adapting to human life as the lazy, freeloading roommate.

Appearance

In his demonic form, Lucifer had an intimidating presence, with dark wings, glowing red eyes, and a sinister aura. He wore a long black cloak and exuded an eerie yet majestic aura fitting his status as a fallen angel.

However, after losing his powers, Lucifer takes on a much less imposing appearance. In Japan, as Hanzō Urushihara, he appears as a slim, pale-skinned teenager with messy dark purple hair and tired, droopy eyes. His lanky frame and casual attire make him look more like a shut-in gamer than a former celestial warrior.

He typically wears a purple hoodie and sweatpants, rarely changing clothes unless absolutely necessary. His unkempt appearance and slouched posture contrast sharply with his once-glorious fallen angel status.

Personality

Lucifer is a lazy, sarcastic, and self-serving individual who prefers to avoid responsibilities at all costs. Initially, he was portrayed as a ruthless and cunning adversary, but after his defeat, he becomes more of a comedic figure, embracing his role as a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training).

Despite his past as a Demon General, he lacks any real ambition, choosing instead to spend his time gaming, browsing the internet, and ordering useless things online. He often mooches off Maou and Ashiya, frequently spending their limited money on frivolous purchases, leading to frequent arguments with Ashiya.

Although he appears to be carefree and indifferent, Lucifer possesses a sharp intellect and hacking skills, often using his knowledge of technology to help Maou in non-combat situations. Despite his laziness, he is still loyal to Maou though mostly because he has no better options.

He occasionally shows glimpses of his former power, but he prefers to avoid combat unless absolutely necessary. His dynamic within Maou’s household serves as a comic contrast to Ashiya’s responsible nature, often making him the subject of Ashiya’s constant nagging.

Role in the Story

  • Betrayal and Alliance with Olba Meyer
After losing to Hero Emilia, Lucifer was rescued by Olba Meyer, who convinced him to join forces in order to eliminate Maou and regain his celestial status. However, once in Japan, Lucifer failed spectacularly in his attack against Maou, as the Demon King was able to regain some of his lost power. After being defeated again, Lucifer was left powerless and stranded in the human world, forcing him to live with Maou instead of continuing to fight him.

  • Becoming a Freeloader in Maou’s Apartment
Without any real means to support himself, Lucifer quickly settled into a NEET lifestyle, refusing to find work and instead spending his days playing video games, hacking, and wasting money on online shopping. His poor spending habits frequently put a strain on Maou and Ashiya’s finances, leading to heated arguments, particularly with Ashiya, who constantly scolds him for being useless.

  • Occasional Usefulness
Though mostly lazy and unmotivated, Lucifer occasionally proves his worth by using his intelligence and hacking skills to assist Maou and the group. He is particularly adept at technology and information gathering, often using the internet to research supernatural occurrences and occasionally manipulating digital systems to help Maou with his goals. While he avoids combat, Lucifer can still tap into fragments of his former power when necessary, making him a situationally useful ally—though he rarely exerts himself unless absolutely necessary.

Relationships

Sadao Maou / Demon King Satan
Lucifer was once a loyal subordinate of Maou, though their relationship became strained after his attempted betrayal. After being defeated, Lucifer was forced to rely on Maou, making their dynamic a mix of reluctant loyalty and comedic bickering. Despite his freeloading habits, Lucifer still respects Maou’s leadership he just prefers to let others do the hard work while he relaxes.

Shirō Ashiya / Alciel
Lucifer and Ashiya constantly argue, mainly due to Lucifer’s laziness and irresponsible spending habits. Ashiya treats Lucifer like an unruly child, frequently scolding him for wasting money and refusing to find a job. Though they bicker constantly, Ashiya secretly looks out for Lucifer, ensuring he doesn’t get into trouble even if he complains about it.

Emilia Justina / Emi Yusa
Emi distrusts Lucifer, knowing he once tried to kill her, but mostly sees him as pathetic now that he has been reduced to a lazy, unemployed gamer. She frequently mocks him for his fall from power and often lectures him about his freeloading habits.

Chiho Sasaki
Lucifer gets along with Chiho, though mostly because she doesn’t nag him like the others. He sometimes teases her, but he generally doesn’t take her seriously.

Trivia

    • Lucifer’s fall from grace and transformation into a NEET is one of the series’ biggest comedic elements.
      • Despite his laziness, he is an exceptional hacker and can manipulate technology with ease.
      • He hoards useless online purchases, which frequently angers Ashiya.
      • His angelic heritage still exists, but he refuses to acknowledge it, preferring to avoid anything related to his past.
      • He is physically weak compared to the others due to his lack of exercise and poor diet.

    Legacy

      • Lucifer serves as one of the main comedic elements in Hataraku Maou-sama!, highlighting the ridiculous contrast between powerful supernatural beings and mundane human life. His fall from a feared celestial warrior to a lazy NEET is one of the show’s best examples of satirical humor, making him a fan-favorite character despite his lack of ambition.
        • Though he rarely contributes to battles, his intelligence and technical skills occasionally make him useful, proving that even the laziest of demons have their moments of competence.
