Haine

Haine (ハイネ) is a key antagonist in Summertime Rendering, known as the God of Hitogashima, Hiruko no Mikoto, and the Mother of the Shadows. She is the originator of the Shadows and holds a significant influence over the events occurring on the island. Haine takes on the appearance and identity of the first person she copied, Haine, and continues to use this form as her primary guise. Due to her limited mobility, Haine often copies others, including Shiori Kobayakawa, to traverse the island and manipulate events more directly.

Appearance

Haine’s primary form mirrors that of the original Haine she copied—a young girl with long, flowing white hair, pale skin, and crimson eyes that exude an eerie, otherworldly presence. Her delicate features and youthful appearance create a juxtaposition with her menacing and godlike status.

When assuming the form of Shiori Kobayakawa, Haine takes on the appearance of a cheerful young girl with short black hair and bright, innocent eyes. This transformation allows her to blend seamlessly with the island’s inhabitants and interact with them unnoticed. Despite the seemingly harmless exterior, her unsettling aura and the Shadows that follow her betray her true nature.

Personality

Haine is cold, calculating, and highly manipulative. As the Mother of the Shadows, she is singularly focused on her goals and demonstrates little empathy or regard for human life. Her godlike authority over the Shadows reinforces her sense of superiority, and she views humans as mere tools or obstacles to be eliminated.

Despite her ruthless nature, Haine possesses a deep connection to the Shadows, treating them as her children and exhibiting a protective instinct toward them. Her calculated demeanor is often accompanied by a quiet, almost unsettling calm, making her a deeply intimidating figure.

Haine’s ability to adapt her personality to fit her chosen form—whether as the godlike Hiruko or the innocent Shiori—showcases her cunning and resourcefulness, making her a master manipulator.

Role in the Story

Mother of the Shadows
As the creator of the Shadows, Haine plays a central role in the supernatural events that plague Hitogashima. Her ability to copy and control others allows her to spread the Shadows’ influence across the island. Haine’s ultimate goal involves the perpetuation and survival of the Shadows, which often comes at the expense of the human population.

Connection to Shiori Kobayakawa
By copying Shiori Kobayakawa, Haine gains a means to interact with the islanders directly. This form allows her to observe, manipulate, and control events from a close perspective without immediately arousing suspicion. Shiori’s innocent and unassuming appearance contrasts sharply with Haine’s true nature, adding a layer of psychological tension to her interactions.

The Catalyst for Conflict
Haine’s actions and motives serve as the catalyst for much of the series’ conflict. Her connection to the Shadows and her ability to manipulate others make her the central threat that the protagonists must unravel and confront.

Abilities

Shadow Creation and Control
As the Mother of the Shadows, Haine has the ability to create and command the Shadows. Her power allows her to manipulate these entities to achieve her goals, whether by using them to eliminate threats or to spread their influence across Hitogashima.

Copying and Transformation
Haine can copy the physical appearance, memories, and abilities of others, making her an incredibly dangerous and deceptive foe. This ability extends to transforming into forms like Shiori Kobayakawa, which she uses for reconnaissance and interaction.

Omnipresent Influence
Despite her limited mobility, Haine’s reach extends across the island through her Shadows. Her godlike presence and ability to oversee events give her a near-omniscient perspective, allowing her to plan and execute her objectives with precision.

Relationships

The Shadows: Haine is revered as the “Mother” by the Shadows, who see her as their creator and ultimate authority. She, in turn, shows a protective and possessive attitude toward them.

Shinpei Ajiro: As the protagonist, Shinpei becomes a key adversary to Haine, whose plans he continuously thwarts using his unique abilities. Their dynamic drives much of the story’s tension.

Shiori Kobayakawa: Haine uses Shiori’s form as a tool for her goals, exploiting the girl’s innocent appearance to manipulate the island’s residents.

Trivia

  • Haine’s name is derived from her first copied victim, symbolizing her duality as both a godlike entity and a being defined by her ability to mimic others
  • Her crimson eyes and white hair are iconic features that reflect her status as an otherworldly figure.
  • The form of Shiori Kobayakawa, while seemingly harmless, creates a chilling juxtaposition when used by Haine to enact her sinister plans.

Legacy

Haine serves as a chilling embodiment of the series’ central themes of identity, manipulation, and survival. Her role as the Mother of the Shadows makes her a driving force behind the narrative’s tension, while her ability to blend innocence and menace adds a psychological complexity to her character. Haine’s actions and influence leave an indelible mark on the story, solidifying her as a formidable and memorable antagonist inSummertime Rendering.
