Grelle Sutcliff

Grelle Sutcliff (グレル・サトクリフ, Gureru Satokurifu) is a Grim Reaper in the anime and manga series Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji). A flamboyant and unpredictable figure, Grelle is a member of the Retrieval Division of the Grim Reaper Dispatch. Known for her dramatic personality and fierce combat abilities, Grelle initially appeared as an accomplice to Angelina Dalles in the infamous Jack the Ripper case. After being temporarily suspended for her actions, Grelle has since resumed her duties as a fully active Grim Reaper.

Appearance in manga

Grelle Sutcliff is a distinct and eccentric character, characterized by her bold appearance and unorthodox approach as a Grim Reaper. She has long, dark-red hair and shark-like teeth, which give her a somewhat menacing but unique look. Her red-framed glasses, often adorned with a chain featuring skulls, add to her dramatic appearance. Like all Grim Reapers, Grelle possesses chartreuse phosphorescent eyes that glow with an eerie light, further emphasizing her otherworldly nature.

Her usual attire includes a striking red-and-black ensemble, with a vest, gloves, and a 4.33-inch high-heeled ankle boots, making her stand out in any crowd. Around her neck, she wears a red-and-white striped bow, adding a splash of contrast to her dark, edgy style. Grelle’s red coat is particularly notable, as it was taken from Angelina Dalles after Grelle fatally wounded her. She often wears this coat slung off her shoulders, with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, giving her a casual yet deadly appearance.

Grelle has also modified her Death Scythe, transforming it into a chainsaw to suit her preference for more modern, flamboyant tools of death. She finds the traditional scythe to be outdated, favoring the chainsaw for its practicality and flair.

When Grelle masqueraded as Angelina Dalles’ butler, she took on a completely different look. Her hair was brown and tied with a red ribbon, and she wore plain black clothing, further demonstrating her ability to adapt to different personas.

Personality

Grelle Sutcliff is a bold, expressive character with a flair for drama and a tendency to act on her impulses. Known for her flamboyant personality, she is unapologetically herself, often vocalizing her emotions and desires without hesitation. Her strong affinity for the color red, which she views as a symbol of beauty, complements her dramatic nature and is a signature aspect of her persona.

Combative and quick to resort to violence, Grelle is not afraid to use force to remove any obstacles in her path. Her numerous confrontations with Sebastian Michaelis highlight her aggressive tendencies and her disregard for moderation. She also demonstrates a ruthless streak, as seen in her decision to kill her partner Angelina Dalles without hesitation after the latter hesitated to kill her nephew. This action reflects Grelle’s lack of patience for indecision and her unwavering commitment to achieving her goals.

Initially, Grelle was dismissive of the Grim Reapers’ traditional principles, particularly their doctrine of remaining neutral in human affairs. Her unlawful collaboration with Angelina Dalles was a direct defiance of these principles. However, after serving a suspension, Grelle came to respect the importance of soul-reaping and even took on a more mentoring role, sharing her newfound understanding with fellow Grim Reaper Ronald Knox. Despite this, her impulsive nature remains, and she is still prone to breaking rules when emotions or personal motivations take over, as shown when she tried to kill Aleister Chamber, ignoring the prohibition against killing humans.

Grelle’s speech is often laced with double entendres, and she frequently draws upon theatrical references. She describes events in dramatic terms, such as referring to Angelina’s death as a “falling of curtains” and likening her complex relationship with Sebastian to that of Romeo and Juliet. These references reflect her love for performance and her tendency to view life through a theatrical lens.

History

Grelle Sutcliff’s history is intertwined with her complicated relationship with Angelina Dalles and her eventual defiance of the Grim Reaper code. When Angelina, under the alias Jack the Ripper, began committing a series of gruesome murders of pregnant prostitutes, Grelle became intrigued by her actions. She sympathized with Angelina, particularly relating to her own struggles with an inability to give birth, which likely contributed to her feelings of alienation and a sense of understanding toward the tragic figure that Angelina had become.

Rather than adhering to the Grim Reapers’ strict code of neutrality, which mandates that they remain uninvolved in human affairs, Grelle chose to assist Angelina in her violent mission. This defiance marked a key turning point for Grelle, as she made the conscious decision to break the rules in order to support someone who shared her perceived emotional pain.

To conceal her true identity and avoid suspicion from other Grim Reapers, Grelle disguised herself as a member of the Burnett family, taking on the role of their butler. This allowed her to remain undetected while continuing her work alongside Angelina. Grelle’s actions in this period reflect her impulsive nature and willingness to challenge authority in pursuit of what she saw as a personal connection to Angelina’s cause. However, this alliance would ultimately lead to her suspension and a reevaluation of her beliefs and actions as a Grim Reaper.

Relationships

  • Sebastian Michaelis
Grelle is infatuated with Sebastian, frequently flirting with him and expressing her admiration for his demonic abilities. While Sebastian remains indifferent, their interactions are a recurring source of humor and tension in the series.

  • Angelina Dalles
Grelle’s partnership with Angelina during the Jack the Ripper case was based on shared motives and a twisted sense of camaraderie. Despite her betrayal, Grelle expressed sorrow over Angelina’s death, hinting at a deeper bond.

  • Other Grim Reapers
Grelle maintains a professional but often chaotic relationship with fellow Grim Reapers, such as William T. Spears, whose strict demeanor contrasts sharply with Grelle’s dramatic personality.

Trivia

    • Grelle’s Death Scythe, a chainsaw, is a modification of the standard Grim Reaper scythe, symbolizing her rebellious and unconventional nature.
    • Her shark-like teeth are a unique feature among Grim Reapers, reflecting her fierce and chaotic personality.
    • Grelle’s red hair and vibrant personality stand out among the typically subdued Grim Reapers, emphasizing her individuality.

Legacy

Despite her morally ambiguous actions, Grelle’s complexity and unapologetic individuality have earned her a strong fan following. Her role as both an antagonist and an ally highlights the unpredictable and multifaceted nature of the Grim Reaper Dispatch, adding depth and intrigue to the story.
