Gorou Amamiya (雨宮 吾郎, Amamiya Gorō), is the introductory character of the anime and manga series Oshi no Ko. A compassionate and dedicated obstetrician-gynecologist, Gorou worked at a rural hospital and was assigned to oversee the secret pregnancy of idol Ai Hoshino. A devoted fan of Ai in his personal life, Gorou’s admiration for her transformed into a deep desire to protect her and support her through her unexpected motherhood. Tragically, he was murdered by a stalker of Ai on the day of her delivery, only to be reincarnated as her son, Aquamarine Hoshino, one of the main protagonists of the series.
Though his life is cut short early in the story, Gorou’s presence and values echo throughout Oshi no Ko, both through Aqua’s memories and the moral compass he once lived by. His backstory adds emotional depth to Aqua’s obsessive quest for truth and vengeance, making Gorou one of the most emotionally resonant characters in the narrative, despite his brief screen time.
Background

Appearance in anime
Gorou Amamiya worked as a young doctor in a small countryside hospital. Though dedicated to his profession, his life was relatively quiet and unremarkable except for one secret passion: he was a huge fan of the idol Ai Hoshino from the group B-Komachi. Her cheerful persona and radiant performances provided him with emotional comfort, especially during the more draining moments of his medical career.
One day, Gorou discovered that Ai at just 16 years old was pregnant with twins and had come to his hospital to give birth in secrecy. Though initially shocked, Gorou swore to protect her and ensure the safe delivery of her babies. He empathized deeply with her isolation and fear, recognizing the burden she carried as a young idol in a demanding industry.
However, Gorou’s life ends abruptly when he is murdered by a crazed stalker who had discovered Ai’s location. In a cruel twist of fate, he is reincarnated as one of Ai’s twins, beginning life anew as Aquamarine Hoshino with full memory of his past life intact.
Appearance
In his former life, Gorou was a tall, lean young man with dark hair, lightly tousled and usually worn casually, and calm, gentle eyes that reflected his compassionate personality. He typically wore a standard white doctor’s coat, sometimes seen with glasses during hospital work.
His appearance was clean and modest, consistent with his serious yet caring demeanor. While not flashy or attention-seeking, his expressions often conveyed sincerity and determination especially in moments concerning Ai or his patients.
Personality
Gorou was kind, responsible, and deeply empathetic, traits that made him an excellent physician. He approached his work with a calm and methodical mindset but never lost touch with the emotional needs of his patients. His dedication to Ai’s safety during her pregnancy came not only from fandom but from a genuine sense of duty and protectiveness.
Despite being a fan of idols, Gorou never crossed ethical lines or treated Ai as anything less than a person. He acknowledged the difficulty of her situation and provided support with sincerity and discretion. His gentle humor and grounded nature made him endearing to colleagues and viewers alike.
After his reincarnation as Aqua, many of Gorou’s original traits such as intelligence, rationality, and care for others remain, though they become buried under layers of trauma, vengeance, and emotional repression.
Role in the Story
-
The Doctor and the Idol
Gorou is introduced as the doctor responsible for delivering Ai Hoshino’s child in secrecy. Their interactions reveal a unique bond, as Ai confides in him, and Gorou grows increasingly invested in her safety and well-being. He sees the strength and vulnerability in Ai that others overlook and becomes one of the few people she can trust. Gorou promises to protect Ai and her children, even after birth. However, before he can fulfill this promise, he is murdered outside the hospital by a fan who had discovered Ai’s location. This act of violence is a shocking turning point for the story and sets the tone for the darker themes that follow. -
Rebirth as Aquamarine
After his death, Gorou is reincarnated as Aquamarine Hoshino, Ai’s son. Retaining all of his memories, he approaches his new life with cautious joy now able to be part of the life of the idol he once admired. However, when Ai is killed years later by the same stalker, Aqua (Gorou) becomes consumed by grief and the belief that someone close to Ai betrayed her. This realization fuels Aqua’s transformation into a cold, calculating character obsessed with revenge. Gorou’s personality and ideals continue to influence Aqua’s inner conflict, as his original self still lingers within Aqua’s memories and moral compass.
Relationships
Ai Hoshino
His patient, idol, and mother in his new life. Gorou deeply admired Ai as both a fan and a caretaker, and he was devastated by her murder. His promise to protect her becomes the emotional foundation of Aqua’s mission.
Sarina Tendouji / Ruby Hoshino
Gorou’s former terminally ill patient, who was also reincarnated as Ai’s daughter, Ruby. Though Aqua keeps his identity as Gorou a secret, he continues to care for Ruby with a mix of brotherly affection and residual guilt from his past life.
The Stalker
The unnamed fan who murders Gorou out of obsession with Ai. This character sets into motion the story’s central conflict and represents the toxic extremes of idol culture.
