Giotto, later voluntarily renamed Ieyasu Sawada, is the founder and first boss of the Vongola Famiglia, earning him the title of Vongola Primo. As the progenitor of the Blood of Vongola, he is the direct ancestor of Iemitsu Sawada and Tsunayoshi Sawada. Renowned for his strength and leadership, he established the Vongola Famiglia with the goal of protecting the weak and maintaining justice.
Giotto is also the creator of the Zero Point Breakthrough, a powerful technique that plays a crucial role in the Vongola legacy. Though he has long passed away, his will and spirit continue to reside within the Sky Vongola Ring, much like the souls of the previous Vongola bosses, allowing him to guide and communicate with his successors.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Giotto is a calm and composed leader with a strong sense of justice and compassion. He firmly believes in protecting the weak and always strives to do what is right for the people of his hometown. Despite the Vongola Famiglia rising to power beyond its original purpose, Giotto never allowed his influence to corrupt him. His priority remained the safety of the innocent rather than ruling over them, staying true to his ideals until the very end.
As a leader, Giotto deeply values friendship and loyalty, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his Famiglia and comrades. He cherishes the safety and happiness of local citizens and those close to him, including Cozzato and his Family, while strongly disliking any harm inflicted upon the weak. His charismatic nature allowed him to welcome people from all walks of life into his vigilante group, fostering a diverse and dedicated following. Reborn once stated that Giotto was the kind of person who accepted anyone into the Vongola Famiglia, regardless of their background, showing his inclusive and understanding nature.
Despite experiencing betrayal, Giotto remains forgiving and never harbors grudges. Even after Demon Spade turned against him, Giotto continued to acknowledge him as one of his Guardians, believing in the bond they once shared. This unwavering belief in the strength of relationships and mutual trust is a defining aspect of his character.
However, Giotto is not without his flaws. His pacifistic tendencies sometimes made him naïve, particularly when it came to matters of war and conflict. A notable example of this was his decision to disband Vongola’s military force in an attempt to prevent the Famiglia from fighting for self-interest. While his intentions were noble, he failed to fully consider the consequences of this action, leaving the Vongola vulnerable to retaliation, which ultimately resulted in the death of one of his members, Elena.
Giotto shares many similarities with Tsunayoshi Sawada, particularly in his kind and selfless nature. Much like Tsuna, he believed that a person who was not willing to sacrifice themselves to protect their friends did not deserve to be Vongola Boss. In both appearance and personality, Giotto serves as a reflection of Tsuna, embodying the core ideals of what it means to be the leader of the Vongola Famiglia.
Appearance
Giotto is a young man of average height with spiky blond hair and sharp orange eyes, bearing a strong resemblance to his descendant, Tsunayoshi Sawada. His distinctive features, combined with his confident demeanor, give him an imposing yet charismatic presence as the Vongola Primo.
His attire consists of a black pinstripe suit, a white undershirt, and a black tie, reflecting his refined yet authoritative status as the founder of the Vongola Famiglia. Over his suit, he wears a black cloak with an upturned collar, adorned with red tassels and intricately designed cloak clasps, emphasizing his noble and dignified appearance. As a skilled fighter, he also wears his signature I-Gloves, which serve as a crucial part of his battle style.
In most of his appearances, Giotto is seen in Hyper Dying Will Mode, a state that enhances his strength and abilities, further solidifying his image as a legendary and powerful leader of the Vongola Famiglia.
Equipment and Abilities
As the founder and first boss of the Vongola Famiglia, Giotto was an exceptionally powerful fighter, widely regarded as the strongest Vongola Boss in history. He possessed extraordinary combat skills, heightened reflexes, and an innate ability known as Vongola Hyper Intuition, which allowed him to predict and evade attacks with near-perfect accuracy. Notably, he was the only known Vongola Boss capable of sealing away one’s Hyper Intuition.
Giotto was most often seen in Hyper Dying Will Mode, a state that significantly enhanced his speed, strength, and flame-based abilities. His reflexes were sharp enough to dodge a bullet, further demonstrating his heightened awareness and agility.
Weapons and Equipment
Techniques
Giotto’s combination of natural talent, strategic intelligence, and powerful abilities cemented his status as a legendary figure in the history of the Vongola Famiglia.
Role in the Story
Although long deceased, Giotto’s spirit remains within the Sky Vongola Ring, allowing him to continue guiding and observing his successors. His influence is particularly profound over Tsunayoshi Sawada, whom he acknowledges as the true inheritor of his will. Throughout the series, Giotto plays a pivotal role in shaping Tsuna’s development as Vongola Decimo, ensuring that the young successor understands the weight of his responsibilities and the true essence of Vongola leadership.
During Tsuna’s journey, Giotto appears at crucial moments to test his worthiness, offering both guidance and judgment whenever the young leader faces moral and strategic dilemmas. One of his most significant contributions is teaching Tsuna the Zero Point Breakthrough, a technique that Giotto himself created. By imparting this knowledge, he enables Tsuna to refine and master one of the Vongola’s most powerful abilities, further solidifying his growth as a leader. Additionally, Giotto serves as the embodiment of the Vongola Famiglia’s original ideals, ensuring that Tsuna understands that strength must always be used for protection rather than senseless violence.
His presence within the Vongola Rings acts as a symbol of legacy and honor, reinforcing the notion that the Vongola Boss must uphold justice, even in the ruthless world of the Mafia. Through his interactions with Tsuna, Giotto’s ideals and wisdom transcend generations, shaping not only the future of the Vongola Famiglia but also ensuring that its foundation of righteousness and protection remains intact.
