Gespenst Zerlegen

Gespenst Zerlegen (ゲシュペンス=ゼレーゲン, Geshupensu Zerēgen), more commonly known as Pele Poporo (ペレ=ポポロ, Pere Poporo; Yen Press: Pele Popolo), is the tritagonist of Plunderer. He is initially introduced as a close friend and loyal henchman of Lyne Mei, often assisting her in various tasks. Over time, their bond deepens, leading to a romantic relationship between them.

As the story progresses, it is revealed that Gespenst is not merely a subordinate but actually the colonel general of the White Special Service and one of the Seven Legendary Red Barons. He is known by the title “Pierce Baron” (心撃の撃墜王, Shingeki no Gekitsui-ō; Yen Press: Ace of Piercing Strikes), highlighting his exceptional combat skills and lethal precision.

Appearance in Anime

Gespenst Zerlegen initially presents himself as a mild-mannered and cunning individual, often acting as a subordinate who enjoys teasing his superior officer, Lyne Mei, particularly when she behaves recklessly such as accidentally revealing her underwear. He exudes a playful and laid-back demeanor, making him seem like an easygoing and somewhat mischievous character.

However, following the pre-Abandonment War, Gespenst’s true nature becomes more apparent, revealing a cold and ruthless side. He displays little hesitation in using brutal force, even against his comrades, as seen when he kills a Special Service member simply for displeasing him. His transformation coincides with the revelation that he is actually the Colonel-General of the Special Service, a high-ranking figure with significant authority. Like many members of the White Special Service, Gespenst is adept at concealing his true personality, seamlessly shifting between a charming, easygoing demeanor and a merciless, calculating presence, depending on the situation.

Despite his hardened exterior, Gespenst harbors genuine feelings for Lyne Mei. He acknowledges her determination to save Licht from undergoing surgery, demonstrating a degree of empathy and understanding. In an attempt to comfort her, however, he playfully pushes her into a compromising situation, boldly remarking that she “turns him on”, further hinting at his attraction to her. His ability to balance cold pragmatism with moments of teasing and flirtation adds complexity to his character, making him both unpredictable and intriguing.

Gespenst Zerlegen has light brown hair and green eyes, giving him a distinct yet unassuming appearance. He is often seen wearing a white headband, which adds to his recognizable look. As a high-ranking member of the White Special Service, he dons a military uniform, reflecting his authoritative position as the Colonel-General. His attire reinforces his disciplined and tactical nature, contrasting with his initially laid-back attitude.

Abilities and Power

Gespenst Zerlegen is an exceptionally skilled fighter and strategist, possessing both superhuman abilities as a Red Baron and advanced tactical expertise. His count is stated to be 120, though it remains unclear whether this represents his true count. His count measures the number of people he has doubted, highlighting his deep skepticism and strategic mindset.

Pierce (心撃, Shingeki)
As a Red Baron, Gespenst’s body has been enhanced to wield special abilities, making him an elite combatant. His title, the “Pierce Baron”, reflects his precision in both battle and psychological manipulation.

Mind Reading
Gespenst possesses the ability to read minds, which he primarily utilizes during battle. By continuously reading his opponent’s thoughts, he can analyze weaknesses and anticipate attacks, giving him an overwhelming advantage. This ability was notably demonstrated in his fight against Licht, where, despite Licht’s incredible speed, Gespenst was able to dodge every attack effortlessly. By identifying and exploiting Licht’s blind spots, he quickly overwhelmed him in battle.

Memory Implantation
Gespenst has the ability to implant memories into the minds of others. This ability was initially believed to belong to Erin, as she assisted in transferring Licht and Tokikaze’s memories to others. However, it was later revealed that Erin was merely deceiving Firenda and Clone Schmelman, and the ability actually belonged to Gespenst himself.

Transmission
Similar to Erin, Gespenst can create long-distance communication networks by linking a person’s consciousness to multiple digital screens, allowing real-time communication from different locations.

Bloodlust Activation
As a Red Baron, Gespenst possesses the ability to increase his count by activating Schmelman’s bloodlust genes. However, this ability comes with a severe drawback—the higher his count rises, the greater the risk of losing his sanity.

Master Spy
During the Abandonment War, Gespenst founded and led the Special Service, orchestrating covert operations across the world. He specialized in assassinations of enemy leaders and intelligence gathering, showcasing his unparalleled expertise in espionage and subterfuge.

Master Assassin
As the founder of the Special Service, Gespenst is a highly proficient assassin, capable of eliminating targets with precision and efficiency far beyond that of an average spy. His expertise in assassination contributed to the success of numerous covert missions during the war.

Master Tactician
Gespenst is a highly skilled and cunning strategist, possessing a deep understanding of psychological warfare and battlefield tactics. His tactical brilliance was evident during the Non-Killing Army’s conflict with Schmelman, where he quickly analyzed their situation, predicted public reactions, and devised an effective counter-strategy. He demonstrated foresight and adaptability, issuing precise orders to optimize their chances of success.

His strategic genius was further showcased during his betrayal of Schmelman, where he meticulously planned several tactical moves in advance, ensuring that his actions had the highest probability of success.

Skilled Actor and Infiltrator
Gespenst is an exceptionally skilled actor, capable of flawlessly deceiving and infiltrating organizations. Under the alias “Pele”, he successfully masqueraded as a regular soldier in the Althea Royal Guard, working alongside Lyne Mei and Jail without raising any suspicion. His ability to hide his true nature and immense power is a testament to his remarkable skill in deception.

Relationships

Lyne Mei
His closest companion and eventual romantic partner. Despite his timid act as Pele, he has always cared deeply for her, and as his true identity is revealed, their relationship evolves into one of mutual respect and love.

Licht Bach (Rihito Sakai)
As fellow Red Barons, they share a complicated history, though Gespenst rarely engaged Licht directly until later in the series.

Other Red Barons
As one of the 7 Legendary Red Barons, Gespenst’s relationship with the others is one of both camaraderie and rivalry, depending on their individual allegiances.

White Special Service & Military
His position as Colonel General places him at the center of major political and military events, making him an important figure in the government’s secret operations.

Legacy

Gespenst Zerlegen’s transformation from a meek, comedic sidekick to a powerful and strategic war figure makes him one of the most intriguing characters in Plunderer. His duality as both a hidden Red Baron and a high-ranking officer adds layers of depth and mystery, while his romantic relationship with Lyne Mei humanizes him further. Whether viewed as a deceiver, a tactician, or a warrior seeking redemption, Gespenst’s role in shaping Alcia’s fate is undeniable.
