Gennosuke Kōga

Gennosuke Kōga (甲賀 弦之介, Kōga Gennosuke), is the heir of Danjō Kōga and the rightful successor to the Kōga Manjidani clan. As one of the ten elite Kōga ninja, he is selected to represent his clan in the battle against the Iga Tsubagakure clan. Despite the long-standing feud between the two factions, Gennosuke is engaged to Oboro, the princess of the Iga clan, symbolizing a potential end to their bitter conflict. However, their love is tested by fate, as the war between their clans reignites, forcing them onto opposing sides.

A warrior of great skill, intelligence, and discipline, Gennosuke strives to break the cycle of bloodshed between the Kōga and Iga. His strong sense of justice and unwavering love for Oboro make him one of the most tragic and honorable figures in Basilisk: The Kōga Ninja Scrolls.

Appearance in anime

Born into the prestigious Kōga Manjidani clan, Gennosuke was trained from a young age to be a leader and a formidable warrior. As the grandson and heir of Danjō Kōga, he was raised with the expectation of carrying on his clan’s legacy. However, unlike many of his kin, Gennosuke was not driven by hatred toward the Iga. Instead, he sought peace and unity, believing that the endless war between the two clans was senseless and destructive.

His engagement to Oboro, the princess of the Iga, was meant to solidify this dream of peace, representing the possibility of ending the generations-old blood feud. However, fate was not on their side, as the truce between their clans was broken, and a new battle to the death was decreed by the Tokugawa shogunate. This cruel twist of fate placed Gennosuke in an impossible situation, forcing him to choose between love and duty as he was pitted against Oboro and her kin in a brutal war.

Appearance

Gennosuke is a tall, lean, and composed warrior with a dignified and noble presence. He has long, dark hair tied back, sharp facial features, and piercing eyes that exude both wisdom and power. His calm and serious demeanor reflects his mature and collected nature, making him a striking contrast to the more aggressive and violent warriors of his clan.

He often wears traditional Kōga garb, consisting of a dark kimono and a hakama, which highlight his status as the clan’s heir. Despite his deadly abilities, he carries an air of elegance and restraint, embodying the image of a true leader and noble warrior.

Personality

Gennosuke is a calm, intelligent, and honorable warrior, standing in stark contrast to the bloodthirsty and revenge-driven members of his clan. While many in the Kōga harbor deep hatred for the Iga, Gennosuke seeks to break free from the cycle of vengeance, believing that the feud is a pointless conflict fueled by generations of hatred.

Despite his pacifistic ideals, he is not naïve or weak. He is a highly disciplined and strategic leader, capable of making tactical decisions when necessary. Though he abhors unnecessary violence, he will fight if forced to defend his people. However, he always seeks non-violent solutions first, displaying great patience and wisdom beyond his years.

Gennosuke’s greatest inner conflict lies in his love for Oboro, the princess of the Iga clan. While he genuinely wishes for peace, he is tragically forced into a battle against the woman he loves, making him one of the most tragic and honorable figures in the series. Despite the immense pain and suffering he endures, he never allows hatred to consume him, remaining steadfast in his beliefs and principles until the very end.

Role in the Story

  • The Heir of the Kōga Clan
As the successor of Danjō Kōga, Gennosuke is chosen as one of the ten elite warriors to represent the Kōga Manjidani clan in the deadly battle against the Iga Tsubagakure clan. Despite his disdain for war, he is forced to fight, knowing that his clan’s survival depends on the outcome of this battle.

  • Tragic Romance with Oboro
Gennosuke and Oboro’s love represents the possibility of peace, but the sudden reinstatement of the Kōga-Iga war shatters their hopes for a future together. As the war escalates, Gennosuke desperately tries to find a way to end the bloodshed, but the hatred between the two clans runs too deep.

  • Leading with Honor
Unlike his more ruthless comrades, Gennosuke does not revel in battle. Instead, he leads with wisdom and strategy, seeking ways to avoid unnecessary conflict. However, as the war continues, he is forced to make painful choices, watching as his comrades fall one by one.

  • Final Confrontation with Oboro
As the war reaches its tragic conclusion, Gennosuke and Oboro are the last survivors of their respective clans. Bound by fate yet torn apart by duty, they face one final, heartbreaking moment together, where love and duty collide in the most tragic way possible.

Relationships

Oboro
Oboro is Gennosuke’s fiancée and the woman he loves most. Their engagement was intended to unite their warring clans, but fate tore them apart, forcing them onto opposite sides of the war. Danjō Kōga (Grandfather)
As the heir to the Kōga clan, Gennosuke was trained and raised by his grandfather, Danjō Kōga. While he respected his grandfather’s leadership, he did not share his deep hatred for the Iga, which created a rift between them.

Kōga Clan Members
Though he is the leader of the Kōga warriors, Gennosuke often clashes with his fellow clan members, as many of them are driven by revenge and bloodlust. He is one of the few who truly seeks peace, setting him apart from his more ruthless comrades.
