Frieza

Frieza (フリーザ Furīza), is a major antagonist in the Dragon Ball franchise. He is the descendant of Chilled, the younger son of King Cold, the younger brother of Cooler, and the father of Kuriza.

Rising to power as the emperor of Universe 7, Frieza quickly inherited his father’s imperialist army and solidified his reputation as one of the most feared tyrants across the universe due to his ruthlessness, cruelty, and immense power. Frieza’s notoriety stems primarily from his orchestrated genocide of the Saiyan race, which he saw as a potential threat to his rule.

Throughout the series, Frieza has been a recurring villain, frequently clashing with his archrival Goku and the Z Fighters. He plays a central role as the main antagonist during the Frieza Saga, Golden Frieza Saga, and later as a villainous protagonist during the Universe Survival Saga. His appearances are marked by his continuous evolution, each time becoming more powerful than before, making him one of the most formidable foes Goku and his allies ever face.

I doubt I need an introduction, but just in case, I am the mighty Frieza, and yes, all the horrible stories you’ve heard are true.

Concept art of First Form Frieza from Resurrection ‘F’—a unique look without his battle armor

Frieza, as one of the most iconic antagonists in the Dragon Ball series, possesses a variety of distinct transformations, each designed to suppress his enormous power and maintain control over it. Unlike other characters who grow stronger with transformations, Frieza’s transformations work in reverse, with each form acting as a limiter on his immense power. His fourth form, which is his smallest and most streamlined, is actually his original form. This is confirmed by Frieza himself during his battle with Goku, where he reveals that his other forms were designed to suppress his overwhelming strength, thus keeping his power under control. These transformations reflect both Western and Japanese cultural depictions of demons, adding a layer of thematic depth to his character design.

In his first form, Frieza appears in a more compact and armored appearance. His body is mostly covered in his army’s standard armor, which consists of a purple bodysuit with large yellow shoulder guards. His physical appearance in this form is somewhat smaller and less intimidating than in his final form. He is often seen wearing a red scouter on his left eye, a common tool among his army to measure power levels. His first form, though still immensely powerful, is the most restrained in terms of his raw potential. Frieza’s decision to don this form often stems from his preference for maintaining an air of control and dominance without unleashing his true, terrifying strength.

In his second form, Frieza’s body grows significantly larger and bulkier, towering over his enemies. This form emphasizes raw power and physical intimidation. His horns become more pronounced, curving upwards, giving him a more fearsome, demonic appearance. His facial structure becomes sharper, with a longer face and more prominent cheekbones, further enhancing his menacing presence. Despite his increase in size and strength, Frieza retains his calculated and cold demeanor. This transformation is the first major step up in terms of his power output, though it still falls short of his true capabilities.

Frieza’s third form is perhaps his most alien-looking. His skull elongates, and his face takes on a more grotesque, xenomorph-like appearance. This form draws upon more traditional depictions of extraterrestrial creatures in popular culture, with a sharp, angular head and extended cranium, reminiscent of the classic movie monsters of the 1980s. His overall physique becomes even more monstrous, with a hunched back and elongated limbs. In this form, Frieza’s movements become more erratic and his attacks more brutal. Despite its bizarre and monstrous appearance, this form serves as another intermediate step towards Frieza’s final, true form.

Frieza’s fourth and final form is the most iconic. In contrast to the bulkiness of his earlier transformations, this form is sleek and minimalistic, showcasing Frieza’s true nature. His body becomes smaller, his horns disappear, and his skin turns predominantly white with purple accents on his chest, arms, head, and legs. This form is a stark departure from his previous transformations, emphasizing simplicity over excess. Despite its unassuming appearance, this is Frieza’s most powerful form, where his full potential is unleashed. His power in this form is so overwhelming that it surpasses the combined strength of most of his enemies, forcing Goku to ascend to new levels of power in their climactic battle on Planet Namek. The contrast between Frieza’s small, almost harmless-looking final form and his immense strength is a deliberate subversion of typical villain tropes, where stronger characters often grow in size and bulk.

In his true form, Frieza’s sadistic and ruthless nature shines through. He no longer hides behind transformations, instead relishing in his superiority. His final form is the embodiment of cold, unrelenting power, with no need for the ornamentation of his previous transformations. He also displays incredible control over his energy output, able to decimate entire planets with minimal effort.

After his first resurrection in Dragon Ball Super, Frieza achieves a new transformation, known as Golden Frieza, following four months of intense training—something he had never done before. This form amplifies his already immense power and further refines his final form, coating his body in a shimmering gold hue with purple accents. Golden Frieza represents the pinnacle of his power after training, rivaling the strength of Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue form. However, in his initial battle in this form, Frieza’s arrogance led to his downfall, as he had not yet fully mastered this new transformation, leading to rapid energy depletion.

In the Tournament of Power arc, Frieza masters his Golden Form, allowing him to fight at full power without the stamina drawbacks he initially faced. This mastery makes him a crucial asset to Universe 7 in the Tournament of Power and showcases his ability to learn from past mistakes, further solidifying his place as a cunning and adaptable villain.

Following the events of the Granolah the Survivor Saga, Frieza reveals his latest transformation—Black Frieza. This form, achieved through ten years of intense training in a Hyperbolic Time Chamber, represents his most formidable evolution to date. His body turns black with silver accents, and his power level surpasses even Goku and Vegeta in their Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego forms, respectively. This transformation highlights Frieza’s determination to remain at the top of the universe’s power hierarchy, surpassing even the gods.

After his defeat on Namek, Frieza is rebuilt using cybernetic enhancements, becoming Mecha Frieza. His body is equipped with mechanical parts that compensate for the severe damage inflicted by Goku and the explosion of Planet Namek. In this form, Frieza retains his cold, calculated demeanor, but his reliance on technology indicates his vulnerability and desperation for revenge. Despite his enhancements, he is quickly defeated by Future Trunks upon his arrival on Earth.

During the Universe Survival Saga, Frieza, having been dead since his previous defeat, returns with a halo above his head. The halo signifies his status as a deceased individual who has been temporarily revived to participate in the Tournament of Power. This halo is removed after the tournament when Whis resurrects Frieza as a reward for his efforts and “good behavior,” allowing him to return to the living world.

In promotional material for Dragon Ball Super, a series of stamps depicted Frieza as an “ideal boss” wearing a black business suit, white dress shirt, and red tie, showcasing a corporate version of the character. This version of Frieza appears in the Society Survival Saga, playing off the character’s manipulative and authoritative traits, reimagined in a business setting. Though not canon to the series, this portrayal of Frieza as a businessman highlights his commanding presence and desire for control, even outside the battlefield.

Frieza’s evolving appearance throughout the series reflects his multifaceted nature: from a terrifying galactic emperor to a cunning and adaptive survivor. Each form showcases a different aspect of his character, but they all share a common thread—Frieza’s unwavering lust for power and domination, making him one of the most iconic villains in Dragon Ball history.

    Concept and Creation

Frieza’s name is derived from the word “freezer,” continuing the trend of food-related naming conventions for characters in Dragon Ball. Creator Akira Toriyama initially envisioned Frieza as being associated with a refrigerator, leading to many of his underlings having names related to items found in a fridge (e.g., Zarbon, Dodoria, and the Ginyu Force).

Toriyama has stated that Frieza’s design is an amalgamation of his childhood perceptions of monsters. His appearance is meant to invoke an otherworldly menace, drawing on traditional creature features, such as his angular, demonic form in some of his transformations. Additionally, Frieza’s sadistic nature was partially inspired by Toriyama’s second editor, Yū Kondō.

During the time Toriyama was writing the Saiyan Saga and conceptualizing Frieza, Japan was experiencing an economic bubble, and real estate speculation was rampant. Toriyama admitted that Frieza was partially inspired by real estate speculators, whom he described as “the worst sort of people.” Frieza’s ruthless desire for power and control over planets reflects this influence, as he is depicted as a space tyrant who conquers worlds, similar to how speculators hoarded land and property during the bubble.

In a Shonen Jump interview, Toriyama also revealed that he intentionally made Frieza’s final form smaller and more streamlined to subvert the common expectation that villains become larger and more grotesque as they get stronger. Instead, Frieza’s most powerful form is simple, sleek, and less outwardly intimidating, which contrasts with his immense strength and sadistic personality. This minimalist design further emphasized his terrifying nature, relying on Frieza’s overwhelming power and cruelty rather than his physical appearance to invoke fear.

Frieza’s enduring legacy as one of Dragon Ball’s most iconic villains is due not only to his role in shaping the series’ narrative but also to Toriyama’s unique approach to his design and character, blending childhood fears, contemporary influences, and subverted expectations.

      Personality

      Frieza mercilessly tormenting Vegeta.

Frieza presents himself with a refined and sophisticated demeanor, often speaking with a regal tone and using formal, polite language (Keigo) in the Japanese versions of the series. Despite his elegance, he is cruel, sadistic, and has no reservations about his brutality, which he takes pride in. This makes him one of the most ruthless characters in the Dragon Ball universe. Throughout various English dubs, his character has been portrayed with varying degrees of politeness, often downplaying his refinement and emphasizing his savage nature.

In terms of physical appearance, Frieza has multiple forms, each representing a significant increase in power. His final and most iconic form contrasts with typical expectations of larger, more menacing transformations. In this form, he is small, slender, and humanoid in shape, but his power is vastly superior, representing Toriyama’s intent to subvert typical villain designs by making his most powerful form appear less threatening.

Frieza’s white skin is accented by purple crystalline areas on his head, shoulders, chest, arms, and legs. Despite his small stature in his final form, Frieza is incredibly muscular and capable of immense destruction, often controlling his overwhelming strength with remarkable precision. His final form emphasizes sleekness over bulk, highlighting his deadly efficiency and calculating nature.

Frieza’s overall design draws upon Toriyama’s childhood impressions of monsters and serves as an embodiment of a calculated and heartless tyrant. This is especially reflected in his meticulous, often sadistic handling of enemies, ranging from Vegeta, whom he tortures both physically and mentally, to Goku, whom he taunts with a mix of dark humor and arrogance.

In Dragon Ball Super, Frieza undergoes further transformations, most notably achieving his Golden Frieza form after training, a sleek golden version of his final form. This transformation reflects his vanity and desire for perfection, though it initially comes at the cost of stamina control. Later, Frieza masters this form and even trains to achieve an even greater power level, eventually unveiling his Black Frieza form.

Frieza’s character is distinguished by his vanity, most humorously seen in his sensitivity about his height in his final form. He once stole the Dragon Balls to wish for a five-centimeter increase in height, deeming it necessary to maintain a “natural” growth appearance while avoiding an unnatural look that a larger increase would produce.

Frieza’s leadership and interactions with his subordinates further reflect his authoritative and perfectionist nature. He demands absolute loyalty and is willing to punish even the slightest failure with death, making him feared by those who serve him. Yet, he is capable of sparing individuals if it serves his interest, as shown in his recruitment of characters like Macki and Oil, whom he spares to serve as waitstaff rather than warriors.

Despite his cruelty, Frieza’s narcissistic nature often leads him to self-sabotage, as seen when his desire for revenge against Goku results in his own downfall. His obsession with Goku, whom he sees as his archnemesis, ultimately becomes one of his defining traits throughout the Dragon Ball series.

      Trivia

      • Name Origin: Frieza’s name is a play on the word “freezer,” following Akira Toriyama’s tradition of naming characters after food or appliances. His family members follow a similar theme, with King Cold and Cooler representing cold-related items.

His time in Hell made him reconsider the consequences of living forever, particularly if he were to end up trapped in a situation where he could not escape, leading to a more pragmatic approach to his ambitions.
