Ferid Bathory

Ferid Bathory (フェリド・バートリー, Ferido Bātorī) is the seventh progenitor among the vampires and one of the main antagonists in the anime and manga series Seraph of the End (Owari no Seraph). A cunning and flamboyant vampire, Ferid is responsible for the massacre of Yūichirō Hyakuya and Mikaela Hyakuya’s orphanage family, which sets the stage for Yu’s deep hatred of vampires and his quest for revenge. Ferid remains a key figure in the series, orchestrating events that influence both the vampire and human factions while pursuing his own mysterious agenda.

Appearance in Anime

Ferid is a tall, slender male with a strikingly handsome appearance. He has long, waist-length silver hair with bangs that frame his face, and a lock of hair hanging over each ear. As a pure vampire, Ferid possesses the signature red eyes and pointed ears, further accentuating his ethereal look. His appearance is accessorized with red diamond-shaped earrings, adding a touch of elegance to his already regal appearance.

Ferid’s noble attire is intricate and stylish, consisting of a white long-sleeved shirt with a decorative cut. The shirt features black lines with dark gray rhombi patterns scattered across it, though the stripe on the left side of his shirt disappears after he is defeated by Krul. The shirt’s cuffs are black, with gold-colored lines around the wrist and three buttons, and white lace ruffles spill out over his hands. He pairs this with a set of white gloves that complement the rest of his ensemble.

Over his shirt, Ferid wears a white cape that drapes elegantly over his shoulders and arms. The cape reaches his waist in the front and extends down to his upper thighs at the back. It features black shoulder details, as well as the black vampire insignia on the left shoulder, and two black buttons on the right side. A gold ring is attached to the vampire insignia and is connected to a chain that runs beneath his ruffles, with additional gold decorations hanging from it. Beneath the cape, a wide dark gray strap crosses from his right shoulder to his left hip, adorned with three strips that each have small marks at intervals.

At the base of his throat, Ferid wears a scarlet bow, the tails of which reach down to his waist. Beneath the bow, two layers of white ruffles extend to his mid-chest, enhancing the regal look of his outfit.

Ferid’s white waistcoat, worn over his posterior, is split down the center and reaches his mid-calf. It is secured with a wide black belt that features a large buckle resting over his left hip. Completing his attire, he dons white pants and black boots that reach up to his upper thighs. The boots are adorned with three golden buttons at both the thigh and calf, with the toes and heels shaded darker. Small black ribbons are tied over each heel, secured by small white button details in the center, adding a refined touch to his noble appearance.

Personality

Ferid is a vampire with a distinctly courteous and charming demeanor, often speaking in a pleasant and carefree manner. He enjoys interacting with others and will, whenever possible, place himself physically in a higher position during conversations, asserting his dominance subtly through his posture. His calm and polite mannerisms, however, mask a darker, more sadistic side. Ferid delights in manipulation and cruelty, as seen when he set a trap for Mika and his family. After luring them to an escape route, he savored their loss of hope before coldly slaughtering several children, showing no remorse for his actions.

His devious nature extends to his interactions with allies and enemies alike. Ferid is skilled at covering his tracks, even going as far as to protect his own interests by using assassination lists to conceal his involvement in various schemes. He is also unafraid to make powerful enemies, threatening the Queen of Japan with exposure to the progenitor council should she attempt to eliminate him.

Despite his sadistic tendencies, Ferid remains unfazed by physical injury. Even when provoked by an enemy stronger than himself, and after losing an arm, he continues his pursuit without being fully deterred, though he admits the pain of such an injury. On the battlefield, he is more of an observer than a direct participant, preferring to direct his units and only stepping in when necessary. He is not afraid to manipulate situations, as demonstrated when he blocked an attack aimed at Mika and provoked Yu to draw him away from his squad. However, Ferid is not invincible, and when faced with the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, he chooses to retreat, showing his more pragmatic side in the face of overwhelming force.

History

Ferid is aware of the hidden and complex dynamics within the vampire world, including Krul’s involvement with the seraphs, a fact that places him in a position of significant knowledge and influence. His ability to gather and leverage information is one of his key traits. He also discovered details about Guren’s past, which remain a mystery even to Guren’s closest allies, highlighting Ferid’s keen observational skills and his tendency to gather intel on those around him.

At one point, Ferid turned Shahal into a vampire, further expanding his influence over others. He found Shahal alongside Riko, further tying himself to events that shape the ongoing conflicts and power dynamics within the vampire and human factions. These actions showcase Ferid’s manipulative nature, using his knowledge of individuals and situations to his advantage, while maintaining his typically carefree and sadistic demeanor.

Powers and Abilities

As a seventh progenitor, Ferid possesses immense strength that sets him apart from most vampires and far surpasses human abilities. His status as a noble vampire means he is far stronger than those of lower rank, allowing him to dominate lesser vampires and humans alike. However, he is not the most powerful among the progenitors, as he is weaker compared to higher-ranked progenitors like Krul Tepes.

In combat, Ferid typically relies on his considerable physical strength, preferring to use his bare hands unless faced with multiple strong opponents. When the situation demands it, he can wield swords, adding another layer to his combat abilities. His strength, combined with his tactical mind and sadistic nature, makes him a formidable foe in both direct combat and manipulation.

Relationships

Mikaela Hyakuya
Ferid views Mika as an amusing and useful pawn, exploiting his loyalty to Yu while maintaining control over him. Despite this, Ferid’s interactions with Mika suggest a twisted sense of curiosity and amusement at Mika’s struggles.

Yūichirō Hyakuya
Ferid’s massacre of Yu’s family makes him the object of Yu’s intense hatred. Their confrontations are marked by Yu’s desire for revenge and Ferid’s casual dismissal of his anger, further antagonizing Yu.

Krul Tepes
Ferid serves under Krul Tepes, the vampire queen of Japan, but their relationship is fraught with tension. While Ferid outwardly obeys Krul, he often acts independently, undermining her authority and pursuing his own goals.

Progenitor Council
As the seventh progenitor, Ferid interacts with the higher-ranking vampires in the Progenitor Council. His manipulative nature and penchant for chaos often make him a wildcard among their ranks.

Legacy

Ferid Bathory is a central antagonist in Seraph of the End, driving much of the conflict between humans and vampires. His actions, particularly the massacre of the Hyakuya orphanage, set the stage for the series’ overarching narrative. Ferid’s charm, cunning, and hidden motives make him a complex and intriguing character, embodying the chaos and manipulation that underpin the series’ themes. As both a threat and a wildcard, Ferid remains one of the most dynamic and memorable characters in the story.

Trivia

    • His name, “Ferid Bathory,” is a reference to Elizabeth Bathory, a historical figure often associated with vampiric legends.
    • Ferid’s smirk and cryptic comments often foreshadow key events, emphasizing his role as a manipulative mastermind.
