Appearance in Anime

Fena Houtman is a pale-skinned girl of short stature, with long platinum white hair that has earned her the nickname “The White Marginal.” Her wide, paraiba tourmaline eyes highlight her kindness and naivety, giving her a gentle and innocent appearance. Fena has a thin, slender figure, which, along with her striking features, often attracts the attention of many admirers though she is often uninterested in their affections.

Fena shares a striking resemblance to her mother, Helena, with the main difference being her silvery-white hair, compared to Helena’s light-gold. In fact, Fena’s appearance is so similar to Helena’s that Abel Bluefield notes in Episode 6 that she is almost the spitting image of her mother. Despite her beauty, Fena remains unaware of the impact her looks have on those around her.

At the start of her journey, Fena cuts her hair short using Yukimaru Sanada’s sword, marking a symbolic change as she embarks on her adventure. Over the course of the series, her hair begins to grow back, signifying her development and growth.

After completing her mission to Eden and sacrificing her mystical abilities, Fena’s hair undergoes a significant transformation. It changes from its original platinum white to a dark brown color and grows to waist-length, symbolizing her newfound freedom and the changes she has gone through during her journey.

Initial

As a child, Fena had short hair and wore a heart-shaped locket necklace, a keepsake she would continue to wear throughout her life.

In her former life as a princess, Fena’s long hair was styled in a neat bun, signifying her royal status. She wore the locket that had been with her since childhood, alongside an elegant white gown with black linings. Her attire was completed with a veil adorned with pink roses, white gloves with arm-length sleeves, and pristine white shoes, showcasing her refined and regal appearance.

After escaping Shangri-La, Fena cut her hair short, abandoning her princess attire. The once-polished look, including the lipstick she had worn, was gone, marking the beginning of her transformation into a more independent, free-spirited individual.

Later, after joining the samurai ninjas, Fena adopts a pirate-inspired outfit that reflects her adventurous spirit. She wears a brown pirate hat adorned with a green bandana tied around her head, and a brown corset with two white bishop sleeves on her arms. Her turquoise blouse is cinched at the waist with a brown sash belt, paired with long brown boots, making her look ready for the high seas.

Fena’s weapon of choice is a pirate sword, fitting for her role as the captain of her crew.

Completed

Fena’s appearance evolves slightly from her original design, maintaining many of the key characteristics but with notable refinements. Her eyes, once blue, are now a striking paraiba tourmaline color, shimmering with a vibrant glow, and her eyelashes have become more prominent. Fena’s pale skin now appears shinier, giving her a more radiant look. In this updated design, she wears a pink dress instead of the white gown from her childhood, with her heart-shaped necklace now featuring a blue gemstone instead of the original silver pendant. Additionally, faint pink blushes appear on her cheeks, a subtle detail that distinguishes this design from her original appearance.

While the overall silhouette of Fena’s dress remains similar to the original, there are a few noticeable changes. The roses on her veil are now a soft light-blue rather than pink, and the arm-length white gloves feature delicate white puffs near her shoulders and armpits, which act as armholes on her dress. The bust area of her gown is now a light grey, with tourmaline flower petals subtly imprinted, and the black linings from her original gown have been removed, giving the dress a lighter, fresher appearance. Her white shoes are now revealed to be low heels instead of the more formal design seen earlier. Additionally, the lipstick from her Shangri-La days has been removed, contributing to a more natural look. In some scenes during her swashbuckling journey with the Seven Samurai, she also wears a white nightgown with brown shoes and sleeps barefoot on the submarine ship where she and her crew travel.

As Fena joins the Seven Samurai and embarks on her journey, her haircut becomes slightly longer, marking her growing independence. Her pirate outfit reflects the adventurous nature of her new role and stands in contrast to her original design. The brown corset is replaced with a blue vest, now adorned with three teal straps. Her sleeves are now longer, covering her shoulders for added practicality. The sash belt is larger and burgundy, replacing the brown one from before. The boots’ linings are now green, adding a touch of color to her ensemble. Her bandana is lighter green, with an orange-brown line along the bottom and secured with two beaded pins, while a pink daisy is imprinted on the side. As Fena progresses through her journey, her hair continues to grow slightly, further symbolizing her evolving role as a pirate captain.

Personality

Fena Houtman possesses a cheery and upbeat personality despite the trauma she has faced in her past. Her light-hearted demeanor often shines through, even in difficult situations. As her journey progresses, Fena begins to show remarkable courage and leadership, particularly when she recruits Yukimaru Sanada and his samurai-ninja group to join her quest. She displays an innate ability to inspire and unite those around her, guiding her crew with kindness and compassion.

While Fena is kind and caring, she often worries about the safety of others, always placing their well-being above her own. She has a tongue-in-cheek and shy side to her, often displaying a playful sense of humor, but she is also deeply serious and possesses the guts to face the challenges ahead. Fena’s loyalty to her friends and comrades is clear, and she is always there to lend a helping hand.

Her hotheadedness and impulsive decisions frequently lead her to act irrationally, only to regret her actions afterward. However, this also reveals her perseverance she doesn’t let mistakes hold her back. Instead, she strives to grow stronger and brighter, lighting up the lives of those around her, and helping them grow closer as a team.

Though naturally clumsy and less graceful than some of her shipmates, Fena is determined to contribute to the crew. She actively tries to learn new skills, particularly in weaponry, in an effort to become more useful. Despite her upbeat nature, Fena can become uncharacteristically quiet when reflecting on her past. These moments of silence often worry her comrades, who care for her deeply and want to help her face the darkness of her memories.

Abilities

While Fena has not fully developed her combat skills at the start of her journey, it is presumed that she will become proficient in various forms of combat as the series progresses. Throughout her adventures, Fena demonstrates an eagerness to learn and improve, particularly when it comes to weapons.

One of the skills she is likely to develop is archery, as shown in her interactions with her crew. Additionally, Fena’s weapon of choice is a pirate sword, which she uses with increasing proficiency as she grows into her leadership role.

As the series unfolds, it is expected that Fena will continue to refine her combat abilities, utilizing her courage and determination to become a skilled and capable warrior, further solidifying her role as the captain of her crew.

Relationships

Franz Houtman
Franz Houtman is Fena’s adoptive father. He played a key role in Fena’s upbringing and is one of the few people who cared for her during her early years. Though Fena’s biological past is tied to tragedy, Franz’s love and care shaped her into the strong, independent woman she is today.

Yukimaru Sanada
Yukimaru Sanada holds a special place in Fena’s heart, as he was a key figure in her past. Fena has known him since childhood, and he was instrumental in helping her escape to Shangri-La after the tragic death of her parents. Their reunion ten years later is charged with emotion, as Yukimaru saves her again, killing attackers who try to harm her.

Fena harbors a crush on Yukimaru, a fact that those around her easily notice, although Yukimaru remains oblivious. Her jealousy flares when he interacts with other women, and she often tries to draw his attention, even to the point of getting hit over the head in the process. Despite their bickering and Fena’s hot-headedness, she is fiercely protective of him and strives to be useful to him, hoping to repay him for all he has done. Their relationship is built on a foundation of mutual care, with both expressing their affection in non-traditional ways, dancing around each other in subtle yet meaningful gestures.

Shitan
Shitan is a confidant and mentor to Fena. She first meets him during her tour of the island, where he teaches her how to shoot a bow. As their journey progresses, Fena often turns to Shitan for advice, especially after her interactions with Yukimaru. He relates to Fena’s desire to protect Yukimaru and helps her find a teacher to improve her combat skills. Shitan also has a playful side, teasing Fena about her feelings for Yukimaru and getting under her skin with comments about her relationship with Arya.

Karin
Karin is the first of the samurai pirates that Fena meets after Yukimaru. She gives Fena a tour of the island and introduces her to the blacksmith workshop. Throughout their journey, Karin and Fena form a close bond. Karin reveals her design for the ship Bonito-2, a vessel that Fena initially questions, wondering why it was named “Bonito” instead of “Whale.” Karin explains that bonitos are delicious, much to Fena’s understanding. Fena also learns that Karin is susceptible to Yukimaru’s head-bonking, just like her, which leads to amusing moments between the two women. Karin’s support is unwavering, and she is fiercely protective of Fena, especially when others objectify her.

Kaede
Kaede is one of the twin samurai who quickly grows attached to Fena. Fena is often seen mixing up the twins’ names, but Kaede and her sister Enju work to help Fena feel more at home among the crew. Both twins become protective of Fena, especially when they see others objectifying her. Kaede is particularly caring, and their bond grows during their time together. At one point, Fena accidentally kicks Kaede’s stick while practicing, leading to a humorous moment where Kaede chases after it. Fena, Kaede, and Enju all share a sense of jealousy when they see Arya and Yukimaru grow closer, as the boys grow envious of their interactions with the women.

Enju
Enju, like Kaede, is a twin samurai who quickly becomes attached to Fena. He is protective of her, especially when the pirates attack, ensuring she stays safe. Enju, along with Kaede, gets upset when people sexualize Fena, showing his deep care for her well-being. Enju and Fena, like Kaede, feel jealous when Yukimaru interacts with Arya. Their jealousy is rooted in their growing feelings for Fena and their desire to protect her.

Tsubaki
Tsubaki is a mentor figure who teaches Fena how to make kobiru, a skill she uses in her travels. Later, as Fena seeks to improve her fighting abilities, she turns to Tsubaki for help. Although he is considered the worst swordsman among the group, he still trains Fena in the art of sword fighting. Their relationship is built on mutual respect, with Tsubaki’s guidance helping Fena grow as both a fighter and a person.

Makaba
Makaba is the second samurai ninja to meet Fena after Karin and Yukimaru. He shows her the bows he has constructed, introducing her to the world of weaponry. Fena attempts to improve her physical skills and engages in fistfighting practice with Makaba. During one of their training sessions, Fena attempts to punch him in the abdomen, but he remains unaffected, showing his strength and composure. Their bond grows as Fena learns from him, although she remains determined to prove herself as a capable member of the crew.
