Farangis

Farangis (ファランギース, Farangīsu) is a priestess of the Temple of Mithra and a skilled warrior, serving as a key member of the Camp of Arslan in The Heroic Legend of Arslan. Known for her elegance, wisdom, and exceptional combat abilities, she wields both magic and archery with deadly precision. Farangis is devoted to her duty, maintaining a calm and composed demeanor even in the heat of battle. As a trusted ally of Prince Arslan, she plays a vital role in his journey to reclaim the throne of Pars.

Personality

Narsus with Farangis

At first, Farangis appears to be a cold and aloof individual, maintaining a formal and reserved demeanor. She is highly disciplined and composed, showing respect and professionalism toward her allies with the notable exception of Gieve, with whom she often shares a more playfully dismissive dynamic.

On the battlefield, Farangis is ruthless toward her enemies, particularly Lusitanians, showing no hesitation in eliminating those who threaten Arslan or her mission. However, despite her stoic exterior, she harbors a supportive and considerate nature, displaying a sisterly bond with Alfreed and offering guidance to her companions when needed.

Although she rarely expresses strong emotions, Farangis possesses a subtle sense of humor, which occasionally surfaces especially in her interactions with Gieve, where she often responds to his flirtations with witty remarks or silent amusement.

In the Japanese version, she refers to herself using the first-person singular pronoun “私” (Watashi), reflecting her formal and refined speech pattern.

Appearance

Farangis is a strikingly beautiful woman, characterized by her shiny dark hair, sharp eyes, and small red lips. She possesses a curvy yet athletic physique, which, combined with her graceful presence, makes her one of the most elegant figures in Arslan’s company.

Her attire consists of a revealing white top with a draped hood, a white skirt, and a white cape, complemented by thigh-high brown boots. She accessorizes with red, teardrop-shaped earrings and carries a whistle around her neck, which she uses to communicate with the Djinn.

Gieve, one of her companions, describes her as “exquisitely beautiful,” often expressing admiration for her ethereal and commanding presence.

Role in The Heroic Legend of Arslan

Farangis serves as both a warrior and spiritual guide for Arslan, offering wisdom, guidance, and unwavering support in his quest to reclaim Pars.

Farangis is one of the most skilled archers in the series, able to hit targets with deadly precision, even in the heat of battle. Her combat skills make her invaluable, as she can eliminate enemies from a distance while still holding her own in close combat.

Her divine aura and wisdom give her a unique role within the resistance, as she commands respect and admiration from both allies and enemies. Despite her mystical presence, she remains a grounded and pragmatic fighter, never hesitating to take decisive action when needed.

Relationships

Gieve
Gieve frequently attempts to court Farangis, using poetry, music, and elaborate praise to win her affection. However, Farangis consistently rejects his advances, maintaining a cold and disapproving demeanor toward him. Despite this, her attitude does not appear to be rooted in hatred or contempt, as she often responds to his flirtations with calm indifference rather than outright hostility.

In the anime adaptation, subtle hints suggest that her initial opinion of Gieve gradually changes, as indicated by her reaction to his return later in the series.

Arslan
Farangis holds great respect for Arslan, stemming from her sacred vow to protect him as the crown prince of Pars. She remains steadfastly loyal to his cause, offering him both wisdom and unwavering support throughout his journey.

Daryun
Farangis respects Daryun for his exceptional prowess as a warrior and appears comfortable in his presence. She occasionally teases him, such as when she chides him for being “too soft” after he spares Xandes, the son of Kharlan.

Her familiarity with Daryun leads Gieve to suspect that she harbors feelings for him, making him jealous of their interactions. However, Farangis has never shown any romantic interest in Daryun, and their relationship remains purely one of mutual respect and camaraderie.

Alfreed
Farangis shares a friendly bond with Alfreed, with both women appearing comfortable around each other. Alfreed openly discusses her feelings for Narsus with Farangis, who listens without judgment. Despite Farangis’ beauty, Alfreed does not see her as a romantic rival but does envy her well-endowed figure, occasionally expressing lighthearted jealousy over their physical differences.

Etymology

Farangis’ name is a reversed derivative of the character Wispan-Friya from the Shahnameh, the Persian epic written by Ferdowsi. The name Wispan-Friya is a Middle Persian compound meaning “beloved by all.” This etymology aligns with Farangis’ graceful and revered presence within The Heroic Legend of Arslan.
