Eucliwood Hellscythe

Eucliwood Hellscythe (ユークリウッド・ヘルサイズ, Yūkuriuddo Herusaizu), often referred to as “Eu” (ユー, Yū), is a powerful necromancer and a central female protagonist of the series. First introduced wandering the streets of Tokyo, she encounters Ayumu—a young man tragically murdered by a serial killer. In a fateful twist, Eu revives Ayumu, transforming him into a zombie and becoming his first companion and housemate.

Eu is an enigmatic figure known for her silent demeanor and immense magical abilities, though she suppresses her powers to avoid unintended consequences. By the end of the light novel series, Eu loses her supernatural abilities, allowing her to interact freely with others for the first time. Now leading a quiet life, she lives as a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), embracing the chance to experience an ordinary lifestyle.

If I speak, people will die.

Yuno’s full appearance.

Eucliwood Hellscythe has a striking and unique look, setting her apart from other characters with her medieval-inspired appearance. She resembles a young girl from an ancient era, with long, straight silver hair that flows past her waist and piercing blue eyes that give her a serene yet mysterious expression. Eu wears a set of silver armor, which she pairs with a delicate purple dress underneath, creating a blend of elegance and strength in her attire.

A defining feature of her outfit is the small, armored headpiece she wears on her forehead, which she keeps on even during moments of rest or bathing. This headpiece serves as a suppressor for her formidable necromantic abilities, allowing her to keep her powers under control at all times.

Personality

Yukiteru becomes Yuno’s sole focus in life after he gives her a reason to live.

Eucliwood Hellscythe, often called Eu, is a reserved and deeply compassionate individual whose unique circumstances shape her interactions with others. Due to her potent magical abilities, Eu refrains from speaking and expressing emotions, communicating instead through notes on a notepad. This restraint is necessary: her magic activates involuntarily whenever she speaks, causing her severe pain and potentially endangering those around her. Even in the face of her powers’ magnitude, Eu remains humble and avoids using magic unless absolutely necessary, preferring a quiet, peaceful life over one of domination—a choice Kyoko admires, noting Eu could easily rule her own realm if she desired.

Though she appears stoic, Eu has a kind and forgiving heart. She cares deeply for her friends and has demonstrated remarkable compassion, even towards those who have wronged her. For instance, despite Seraphim’s initial mission to assassinate her and the King of the Night’s violent attempts to provoke her, Eu holds no resentment. Ayumu, whom she revived and whom she is especially close to, describes her as the most caring person he has ever met. Her bond with Ayumu is particularly special; although she had just met him when he was mortally wounded, she used her powers to bring him back to life, enduring the pain of the magic herself, an act of sacrifice that she only reserves for those who truly matter to her. Later, Eu openly admits that she loves Ayumu, highlighting the depth of her attachment to him.

Eu’s kindness extends to her refusal to judge or mock others; she never criticizes Ayumu for wearing a magical girl costume—a point of frequent jest for others—showing a quiet acceptance that strengthens their bond. Despite her outward calm, Eu is deeply affected by the misuse of words like “death,” a reminder of the heavy toll her powers have taken on her life and those around her. She once slapped Haruna for casually telling Ayumu to “drop dead,” a reaction rooted in her understanding of the painful and final nature of death. When Kyoko cruelly attacked her friends, Eu’s anger reached a rare intensity, leading her to use her magic to strip Kyoko of nearly all her extra lives, despite the suffering this act caused her.

Beneath her serene exterior, Eu struggles with low self-esteem and guilt. The accidental loss of friends in the past has left her feeling like a monster, making her hesitant to share the truth about her abilities with others. When she finally reveals her powers to Ayumu, she fears he will hate her; however, he reassures her, seeing only the kindhearted girl who saved his life. This pivotal moment strengthens their bond and marks a turning point for Eu, who briefly leaves her friends to prevent any further harm but later reconciles with Ayumu, vowing never to abandon him again.

Over time, Eu opens up more and gains some control over her powers, allowing her to speak on occasion, and she slowly begins to accept her abilities. Ayumu’s unwavering support provides her with a sense of comfort and acceptance, helping her come to terms with her insecurities. She finds solace in having someone who sees her for who she truly is and stands by her despite her fears, ultimately allowing her to embrace a new sense of peace and belonging.

Background

Eucliwood Hellscythe hails from the Underworld, though much of her past remains shrouded in mystery, including how long she resided there and the full extent of her activities. It is known, however, that she was a member of the Seventh Abyss, a powerful faction within the Underworld. During her time there, Eu formed a close friendship with Naegleria Nebiros, a skilled craftsman who designed Eu’s armor and gauntlets to help suppress her formidable powers.

Eu had actually been living in Tokyo long before she met Ayumu, although exactly how long is unclear. Their fateful encounter occurred outside a convenience store, where Ayumu approached her, attempting to initiate a friendship. Initially, she rejected his offer, but soon after, she saved him from an attack by a serial killer who had been terrorizing the area. Unfortunately, Ayumu’s injuries were fatal, prompting Eu to use her powers to resurrect him as a zombie, despite the physical pain it would cause her. This act of compassion marked the beginning of their connection, with Eu ultimately becoming Ayumu’s first housemate, setting the stage for their enduring bond and the events to come.

Plot

Eucliwood and Life at the Aikawa Residence

Approximately a month after the traumatic incident that claimed Ayumu’s life, Eucliwood continues to live quietly alongside him, their days marked by simple routines. Eu’s daily life consists of eating the meals Ayumu prepares, taking naps, and exchanging occasional written messages with him. This peaceful, if somewhat monotonous, lifestyle takes a dramatic turn with the arrival of Haruna, a spirited Masou-Shoujo who declares her “temporary” residence in Ayumu’s home.

Following Haruna’s arrival, Eu also invites another individual to join the household: Seraphim, a skilled vampire ninja. Although Eu declines Sera’s offer to serve as her devoted protector, Sera remains close, pledging to watch over Eu and the others. With Seraphim as the third housemate, the once quiet Aikawa residence transforms into a lively—and occasionally chaotic—hub of supernatural activity and unlikely friendships, redefining the lives of everyone involved.

Relationships

By the end of the light novel series, Eucliwood has settled into a NEET lifestyle. While the series concludes on an open-ended note, there is speculation that Eu has become Ayumu’s wife, hinted at through rumors spread by his co-workers.

Ayumu Aikawa
Eucliwood and Ayumu share an exceptionally close bond, one that began under unusual circumstances but has since grown into a deep, mutual affection. Although they met only a month before current events, their connection is nearly unbreakable. Ayumu has been drawn to Eu since their first encounter, developing a strong crush on her. His fascination with her often borders on protective, with Ayumu fantasizing about her showing affection or speaking kindly to him, despite his humorous “little sister” complex.

Eu, who generally restrains her emotions to avoid causing harm, begins to open up gradually, especially after the encounter with the King of the Night. She even expresses her feelings aloud on rare occasions, such as during her battle against Ayumu’s inner demon of laziness. In this confrontation, she reveals her feelings, saying, “You are not the Ayumu that I love” (translated in English as, “You are not the Ayumu that I fell in love with”), a moment that hints at her deeper emotions for him. Despite her reserved demeanor, Eu values Ayumu as a trusted friend, a loyal companion, and even, in jest, a “friendly servant.” Her acceptance of his affectionate fantasies and willingness to stay by his side suggest she may share these repressed feelings.

At the close of Volume 19, it’s implied that Eu and Ayumu may have married, possibly living together with their other close friends.

Haruna and Eucliwood.

Haruna
Eu’s relationship with Haruna is quirky, with Haruna viewing Eu as a sort of “big sister,” although she frequently denies this, preferring to act as the elder sibling herself. Despite this playful rivalry, they genuinely care for one another. When Haruna told Ayumu to “drop dead” during a heated argument, Eu, who takes the concept of death seriously, uncharacteristically slapped Haruna, underscoring her deep respect for life. Despite these occasional clashes, their bond remains strong, each showing concern for the other’s well-being.

King of the Night
The King of the Night was once a young man whom Eucliwood resurrected as a zombie, much like Ayumu. Initially, they shared a profound connection, with the King rising to prominence in the Underworld. Over time, however, he succumbed to dark ambitions, accumulating power and ultimately killing a member of the Seventh Abyss, an elite rank within the Underworld. Horrified by his actions, Eu attempted to destroy him, heartbroken by the betrayal of someone she once considered close. This tragic relationship underscores Eucliwood’s compassionate nature and her commitment to protecting those she cares about—even if it means facing painful choices.

Abilities and Equipments

Reality Warping
Eucliwood Hellscythe’s primary ability is reality warping, a powerful skill that allows her to manipulate the threads of fate and alter reality itself. The extent of her powers is impressive; whatever she verbalizes can become a tangible reality. However, the only limitations to her abilities stem from the intense side effects she experiences when using them. Notable applications of her reality warping powers include:

  • Resurrection: Although not directly demonstrated in detail, Eu has shown the capacity to bring individuals back to life. She successfully revived both Ayumu and the King of the Night, although the specific restrictions or limitations of this ability remain unclear.

  • Death Inducement: By uttering the word “die,” Eucliwood can kill a person instantly. For instance, she was able to exhaust the lives of a rogue Masou-Shoujo named Kyoko, whose powers involved stealing life to gain a form of immortality. However, using this ability places an immense strain on Eu, often resulting in severe headaches.

  • Healing: Eu possesses the ability to heal the wounds of others. However, this comes at a significant cost: she experiences pain equivalent to the injuries she heals. Essentially, the damage is transferred to her, illustrating her willingness to sacrifice her own well-being for the sake of her friends.

  • Masou-Shoujo Transformation: During her confrontations with Kyoko in Season 1 and the alternate Ayumu in Season 2, Eu utilizes Mystletainn to transform into a Masou-Shoujo. It remains uncertain whether this transformation grants her the necessary magic to be classified as a true Masou-Shoujo.

  • Scythe: In her brief battle against the King of the Night, Eu wields a large scythe, which often doubles as the pen she uses to communicate. This dual-purpose weapon highlights her connection to both her powers and her need for expression.

  • Armor and Gauntlets: Eu’s distinctive armor and gauntlets serve to suppress her overwhelming powers. Although she occasionally removes these protective gear, it is unclear how much more formidable she could become in battle without them. The implications of fighting unencumbered by her armor remain an intriguing mystery.

Weaknesses

Eucliwood Hellscythe has two notable weaknesses that significantly impact her abilities and well-being:

  • Fruit Rinds: In a humorous incident, Eucliwood experiences severe sickness after consuming the rinds of oranges or tangerines. Ayumu, concerned for her health, contacts Shimomura, a fellow Underworlder. Initially, Shimomura toys with Ayumu, testing how far he is willing to go for Eu, but then explains the seriousness of the situation. It turns out that fruit rinds are highly toxic to Underworlders like Eucliwood and Shimomura, highlighting an unexpected vulnerability in her otherwise formidable character.

  • Her Own Power: Eucliwood’s reality-warping abilities, while immensely powerful, also serve as her greatest weakness. Using her powers can lead to debilitating side effects, such as intense headaches. For example, if she were to write “die” while employing her powers, the resulting strain would be overwhelming. Additionally, when she heals Ayumu, she absorbs the pain he experiences, illustrating the heavy toll her abilities take on her own physical and emotional state. This interconnectedness with her powers creates a precarious balance between her desire to protect others and the self-harm that comes with wielding her immense capabilities.
