Emi Yusa (遊佐 恵美, Yusa Emi) / Emilia Justina (エミリア・ユスティーナ, Emiria Jasutina), originally known as Emilia Justina, is the main female protagonist and deuteragonist of Hataraku Maou-sama! (The Devil is a Part-Timer!). She is the legendary Hero of Ente Isla, famed for defeating the Demon King Satan Jacob (Sadao Maou) and forcing his retreat. However, her victory was incomplete, as Satan and his general Alsiel escaped to another world. Determined to finish the job, Emilia followed them through the portal, only to find herself in modern-day Japan, where she lost most of her divine powers and was forced to assimilate into human society.
Now going by the name Emi Yusa, she takes up a job as a call center agent while keeping a close watch on Sadao, convinced that he will eventually regain his powers and resume his conquest. However, as she observes his unexpected transformation into a hardworking and responsible citizen, she begins to question her hatred toward him, leading to one of the most complex character dynamics in the series.
Background

Appearance in anime
Emilia was born to a human mother, Lailah, and an archangel father, making her a half-human, half-angel hybrid. She grew up in a small village in Ente Isla, where she lived peacefully with her mother until tragedy struck the Demon King Satan invaded, resulting in massive destruction and loss of life, including Emilia’s own village.
After losing everything, Emilia was taken in by the Church, who trained her to become a warrior strong enough to defeat Satan. Fueled by hatred for demons and a desire for justice, she honed her swordsmanship and divine magic, eventually rising to become the Hero of Ente Isla. Alongside her allies, she led the final battle against Satan, forcing him to flee through a portal to another world.
However, her pursuit of vengeance did not end there. She followed Satan through the portal, determined to end his existence once and for all only to find herself stranded in Japan with almost no powers. With no choice but to assimilate into human life, she took the identity of Emi Yusa, found work at a call center, and dedicated herself to watching over Sadao, suspecting that he would one day return to his demonic ways.
Appearance
As a Hero from Ente Isla, Emilia had an imposing presence, wearing a silver-plated armor set with a crimson cape and wielding the sacred sword Better Half. She had long, vibrant red hair and striking green eyes, traits inherited from her angelic bloodline.
After arriving in Japan, she adopts a modern look, wearing casual office attire, typically a white blouse and dark-colored skirt. She keeps her long red hair but styles it differently to blend in. Despite her human disguise, her distinctive eye color and sharp facial features still hint at her divine heritage.
Personality
Emilia is initially portrayed as righteous, serious, and stubborn, fully devoted to her role as a Hero. She harbors deep resentment toward Satan for the destruction of her village and the loss of her father, making her fierce, relentless, and occasionally hot-headed when dealing with him.
However, her time in Japan forces her to re-evaluate her rigid sense of justice. She is shocked to find Satan now living as Sadao Maou, a hardworking fast-food employee showing genuine kindness, responsibility, and even a sense of morality. As she witnesses his mundane struggles, she becomes conflicted about whether he truly remains a villain.
Beneath her strong exterior, Emi is caring, empathetic, and deeply lonely, carrying a hidden vulnerability from her past trauma. She struggles with trust, emotional expression, and attachment, though she gradually warms up to her companions. Her tsundere tendencies are evident, particularly in her interactions with Sadao, where she frequently denies any concern for him while secretly keeping an eye on him.

Arrival in Japan & Initial Conflict
After arriving in Japan and losing her powers, Emi reluctantly adapts to human life, working a mundane job and monitoring Sadao Maou for signs of evil resurgence. Initially, she resents her situation, struggling to accept that the once-feared Demon King now lives as a responsible part-timer. She often harasses and threatens Sadao, determined to remind him of his past sins. However, as she spends more time around him, she begins to question whether he is still the same villain she once fought. -
Protecting Humanity & Clashing with Ente Isla
Despite her weakened state, Emi remains a formidable fighter, defending herself and others when remnants of Ente Isla’s forces attempt to interfere with life in Japan. She finds herself caught between multiple factions, including former allies and enemies who still consider Sadao a threat. Her belief in absolute justice begins to waver as she faces morally gray conflicts, forcing her to reconsider her purpose beyond being a “Hero.” -
Complicated Relationship with Sadao
As the series progresses, Emi’s dynamic with Sadao Maou evolves into a complex mix of rivalry, reluctant camaraderie, and hidden admiration. She frequently bickers with him, refusing to acknowledge any respect or trust she may have for him. However, she cannot ignore the moments where Sadao acts selflessly, especially in situations where he protects civilians or his co-workers. Her growing internal conflict over whether to consider Sadao an enemy, a friend, or something else becomes a key aspect of her character development.
Relationships
Sadao Maou / Demon King Satan
Her former arch-nemesis, now an awkward co-worker of sorts. Though she initially hates him, she slowly realizes that he is not the same ruthless conqueror from Ente Isla. Their love-hate relationship forms the core of the series, balancing comedic banter with genuine character growth.
Chiho Sasaki
A human girl who harbors a crush on Sadao and looks up to Emi. Emi acts as a big-sister figure to Chiho, offering advice and looking out for her.
Albert and Emeralda
Her old allies from Ente Isla, who remain loyal to her cause and offer support from afar.
Suzuno Kamazuki
A former inquisitor who becomes one of Emi’s closest allies in Japan. Initially, their relationship is tense, but they develop mutual respect and camaraderie.
