Enhanced Person Number 4 (強化人士4号, Kyōka Jinshi Yon-gō), publicly known as Elan Ceres (エラン・ケレス, Eran Keresu), is a character in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. He is the top pilot sponsored by Peil Technologies, one of the three core branches of the Benerit Group, and a third-year student in the piloting department at Asticassia School of Technology. Elan serves as a member of Peil House and is recognized for his exceptional combat ability, particularly in operating Gundam-based mobile suits developed under Peil’s supervision.
Appearance

Appearance in Anime
Enhanced Person Number 4, publicly known as Elan Ceres, is a slim and androgynously handsome young man with a composed and elegant presence. He has light olive-blond hair styled in a layered bob cut, with long bangs that frame his face and a small braid tied behind his left ear. His pale green eyes are sharp yet often appear detached or melancholic, underscoring his distant attitude.
He wears the Asticassia School of Technology piloting uniform, which consists of a teal and black body suit with red trim, specific to Peil House. Notably, Elan’s version of the uniform is worn with white gloves, adding a refined and formal touch to his appearance. His uniform shorts and long black socks, combined with polished black shoes, give him a dignified yet slightly aloof impression.
Elan also accessorizes with asymmetrical earrings, including a long decorative piece on his left ear, which contributes to his unique and composed visual identity. His posture often with crossed arms or a hand thoughtfully placed near his mouth reinforces his quiet, introspective nature.
Personality and Character
Elan Ceres, also known as Enhanced Person Number 4, is initially portrayed as a quiet, introverted, and emotionally distant individual. He maintains a reserved and solitary demeanor at Asticassia School of Technology, rarely engaging with other students and keeping his true emotions hidden behind a calm, unreadable exterior. His cold and distant nature is reflective of the artificial life he leads as a genetically modified individual created solely for piloting a Gundam.
Despite his aloof personality, Elan shows interest in Suletta Mercury, one of the few people he approaches voluntarily. He does not share the common disdain or fear associated with the terms “Gundam” or “Witch,” which are often met with hostility by other students and members of the Benerit Group. Instead, he interacts with Suletta with apparent openness asking for her contact information, offering her a place in Peil House, and expressing a wish for her to enjoy her school life as freely as possible.
However, Elan’s initial kindness is ultimately revealed to be rooted in projection rather than genuine connection. He reaches out to Suletta because he sees her as someone similarly “cursed” by the Gundam system, a fellow sufferer bound by technology that others fear. His interest is tinged with hope that she might understand the pain and dehumanization he endures as an enhanced person.
When Elan discovers that Suletta’s relationship with Gundam Aerial is fundamentally different that she does not suffer or struggle in the same way he does he feels betrayed and disillusioned. This emotional fracture causes him to lash out, calling her “annoying” and severing the fragile bond he had attempted to form. His reaction underscores the profound loneliness and bitterness that define his existence, revealing that his perceived indifference is, in part, a defense mechanism against the isolation and exploitation he has suffered under Peil Technologies.
History
One of Enhanced Person Number 4’s earliest memories was celebrating his first birthday with an unnamed woman, a fleeting moment that would later stand out in his fragmented past. At an undisclosed time, Peil Technologies selected him as a subject for human enhancement and transformed him into a GUND-Format-compatible pilot, stripping him of his former identity.
Designated as “Enhanced Person Number 4,” he underwent invasive procedures that included memory erasure and extensive physical modifications. These changes altered his face and body to perfectly replicate the original Elan Ceres, a figure with social standing and influence within Peil Technologies. Under this manufactured identity, he was enrolled at Asticassia School of Technology as a third-year student in the piloting department and was installed as the top pilot of Peil House.
As Elan, he performed public relations duties, participated in official duels, and acted as a representative figure for Peil, all while concealing the truth of his origins and the pain of his altered existence. Though he held the name and face of Elan Ceres, Enhanced Person Number 4 struggled internally with the loneliness and emptiness of living a life that was never truly his own.
Relationships
Suletta Mercury
Suletta initially greets Elan warmly, mistaking him for the previous Elan (Enhanced Person Number 4) with whom she had begun forming a connection. However, she soon senses a stark difference in his behavior and becomes visibly uncomfortable around him, describing him as unsettling. After learning the truth that the current Elan is a different person altogether Suletta harbors no resentment toward him. Instead, she requests that he share his knowledge about his predecessor, showing her compassion and willingness to understand.
Miorine Rembran
As the head of GUND-ARM, Inc., Miorine recruits Elan to serve as a test pilot for the company during her corporate outreach and business trips. However, this arrangement is made under the strict condition that he refrains from challenging Suletta to a duel again, indicating her protective stance toward Suletta and her skepticism about Elan’s motives.
Norea Du Noc
Elan and Norea initially share a mutual hostility, often clashing both verbally and physically. Despite their antagonism, a deeper emotional understanding eventually develops between them. During Norea’s emotional breakdown and violent outburst, Elan consoles her and expresses his empathy, revealing his desire to live alongside her beyond the violence of their lives. Her subsequent death at the hands of a Dominicus member leaves a lasting impact on him. In the years following her death, Elan is shown traveling across Earth, visiting the locations illustrated in Norea’s art book as a tribute to her memory.
