Eiji Niizuma

Eiji Niizuma (新妻 えいじ, Niizuma Eiji), is a genius mangaka and the main rival of Ashirogi Muto in Bakuman. Known for his eccentric personality, unparalleled drawing speed, and instinctive storytelling, he rises to fame at a young age and quickly becomes one of the top mangaka in Jump. Despite his childlike and odd behavior, Eiji deeply respects manga and holds an immense passion for the medium, often stating that he “breathes manga”.

He moves from Aomori to Tokyo after winning the serialization of his first major work, Yellow Hit, and soon establishes himself as Jump’s most talented and unpredictable mangaka. His incredible success grants him the right to end any series in Jump that he dislikes, a privilege that showcases the editorial staff’s immense trust in his judgment.

Appearance in anime

Eiji has been drawing manga since childhood and naturally developed exceptional artistic and storytelling abilities. Even before moving to Tokyo, he was already producing professional-quality work that caught the attention of Jump’s editorial department.

Upon his debut, he quickly rises to become one of the top mangaka in the industry, showcasing an unparalleled ability to create hit series effortlessly. He approaches manga with an instinctive and unstructured style, which contrasts with the more strategic and meticulous approach of Mashiro and Takagi.

His career begins with Yellow Hit, but he soon launches his most successful manga, Crow, which solidifies him as Jump’s number one mangaka. His rivalry and friendship with Ashirogi Muto define much of the series’ competitive spirit.

Appearance

Eiji is a young man with wild, unkempt black hair and sharp, intense eyes. He is often seen wearing casual, oversized clothing, such as hoodies and loose-fitting pants, reflecting his carefree and unconventional nature.

When drawing manga, Eiji frequently contorts his body into odd positions, such as crouching on his chair or standing while working, which further emphasizes his energetic and eccentric personality. His overall appearance and mannerisms give off a chaotic genius vibe, making him stand out from other mangaka.

Personality

Eiji Niizuma is a true prodigy with a childlike and eccentric personality. He speaks in a highly animated manner, often making strange noises or exclamations while working. His unconventional demeanor can make him seem immature, but his intelligence and talent are undeniable.

Despite his odd behavior, Eiji is deeply passionate about manga, considering it his entire life. Unlike many mangaka who analyze trends and create structured narratives, Eiji relies purely on instinct, creating spontaneous and unpredictable stories that captivate readers.

He is kind-hearted and respectful, never holding personal grudges against his rivals. Instead, he admires talent and competition, seeing Ashirogi Muto and other Jump authors not as enemies, but as fellow artists who push him to improve. Even when he exercises his right to end a Jump series, he does so not out of malice, but because he genuinely wants to see better manga thrive.

His enthusiasm and love for storytelling make him one of the most well-liked characters among both fans and industry professionals.

Role in the Story

  • Becoming a Jump Superstar
Eiji debuts in Jump with Yellow Hit but soon gains even greater success with Crow, which quickly becomes one of the top-ranked manga in the magazine. His rapid rise to stardom makes him the youngest and most successful mangaka of his generation. Due to his exceptional talent and overwhelming popularity, the editors at Jump grant him a special privilege if he becomes Jump’s number one mangaka, he will be allowed to end any series he dislikes. This condition demonstrates Jump’s absolute confidence in his taste and ability.

  • Rivalry with Ashirogi Muto
Eiji considers Mashiro and Takagi his greatest rivals, but he also respects them deeply. From the moment Ashirogi Muto enters the manga industry, Eiji recognizes their potential and continuously pushes them to improve. As Crow and Detective Trap compete for dominance, Eiji enjoys a friendly but intense rivalry with Ashirogi Muto. Unlike Mashiro and Takagi, who plan their stories meticulously, Eiji relies purely on instinct, making their competition a battle of strategy vs. raw talent. Over time, Eiji becomes one of Ashirogi Muto’s strongest supporters, openly acknowledging their creativity and storytelling brilliance. He fights to keep their series alive when they face editorial challenges and even helps them gain recognition by endorsing their work.

  • Exercising His Right to End a Series
Although Eiji initially agrees to Jump’s condition to end a series, he later changes his mind instead of canceling a manga he dislikes, he uses his privilege to bring an end to his own series, Crow. This decision shocks both the editorial staff and his fellow mangaka, but it reflects Eiji’s deep love for storytelling he wants to challenge himself with new projects rather than stagnate with an ongoing series. His bold and unexpected move cements his status as a fearless and innovative artist.

  • Collaboration with Ashirogi Muto
After Crow ends, Eiji collaborates with Ashirogi Muto on a one-shot manga. This collaboration symbolizes his ultimate respect for them as equals, proving that he sees them not just as rivals, but as fellow visionaries in the industry.

Relationships

Ashirogi Muto (Moritaka Mashiro & Akito Takagi)
Eiji respects Ashirogi Muto as his greatest rivals and admires their storytelling skills. Despite their competitive nature, he considers them friends and even helps them whenever they face challenges.

Jump Editorial Staff
The Jump editors, including Sasaki and Hattori, recognize Eiji’s raw talent and unpredictable nature. While they often struggle to control his eccentric behavior, they trust his judgment and consider him their most valuable mangaka.

Fellow Mangaka
Eiji supports and respects other talented authors, including Shinta Fukuda, Kazuya Hiramaru, and Takurou Nakai. Despite being their direct competitor, he often cheers them on and offers encouragement.
