He is first introduced as the master of Floor B4, where he becomes an obstacle for Rachel Gardner and Zack due to his obsessive desire to bury Rachel and create a grave for her in a desperate attempt to feel loved. Eddie’s Appearance without his Mask

Eddie is a young boy, roughly the same height as Rachel Gardner. His usual attire consists of a plain red scarf around his neck, gray-blue denim dungarees over a simple white T-shirt, dark brown mitten-style gloves, and matching boots. Covering his head is a burlap sack mask stitched along the sides, with a mouth opening and two irregularly shaped holes for his eyes, allowing him to see.

While his face is not shown in the original game, Episode 3: I Swear to God reveals that Eddie has fair skin, bright orange hair, and green eyes. The manga adaptation depicts him with the same features, as well as numerous freckles.

As the floor master and self-proclaimed grave keeper of B4, Eddie is often seen carrying a shovel, which serves as both his tool of choice and weapon.

Personality

Eddie is portrayed as a polite and respectful boy who takes great pride in his role as a grave keeper, following in his family’s footsteps and proudly referring to himself as a “grave keeper’s son” until his death. He has a deep affection for animals and cherishes his family’s pets, reflecting his desire for love and approval from his parents.

His defining motivation is the pursuit of “mutual love,” a concept that drives many of his actions. While this has led to some misinterpretations particularly in the English dub, which suggests necrophilic undertones Eddie himself explicitly rejects such implications. To him, everything he buries becomes a treasured possession that he alone can protect. He believes he brings joy and peace to his “treasures,” whether through creating a proper grave or, in the case of living beings, granting what he considers a swift and painless death with a single blow from his shovel. Rachel’s wish to die leads Eddie to believe that fulfilling it, and then crafting her grave, would ensure she loved him for eternity.

Although generally patient and courteous, Eddie grows increasingly frustrated when Zack repeatedly interferes with his interactions with Rachel. Her rejection of his offer to be the one to kill her pushes him toward desperation, eventually resulting in a tantrum.

Eddie is energetic, playful, and somewhat childish, often bouncing or jumping around when excited and even hanging upside down from pipes when bored. His direct manner of speaking can make his words sound harsher than intended. He also has a strong appreciation for craftsmanship and artistry, admiring works created with care such as Shin’s macabre furniture in the manga because it mirrors the dedication he puts into his own graves.

He is implied to be insecure about his appearance, demonstrated by moments such as asking a girl not to look at his face even while masked, expressing relief when his burlap mask is mistaken for a jack-o’-lantern rather than being mocked for his orange hair, and rarely removing his mask except around trusted family members.

History

Eddie was born into a family that had worked as grave keepers for generations. He was the third of four brothers Albert, Carl, and George and was widely considered the most skilled worker in the family business. Despite his dedication and skill, Eddie never owned anything truly his own; his possessions were hand-me-downs from his older brothers, while his belongings were passed down to his younger sibling. Even the family business was given to the eldest brother, Albert, due to tradition, regardless of Eddie’s superior work ethic.

Albert displayed signs that suggested possible undiagnosed and untreated childhood schizophrenia, exhibiting violent mood swings, emotional instability, and disturbing behavior toward people and animals. When Albert began harming the family’s pets, Eddie who loved the animals dearly begged him to stop and offered himself as a target for Albert’s frustrations instead. From that point on, Eddie endured nightly beatings but kept silent, not wanting to cause trouble for the family.

One night, Eddie encountered an unnamed girl, with both mistaking each other for ghosts Eddie because of his pumpkin-like burlap mask. They began meeting regularly at night, talking and making graves together, although the girl never spoke about her past. Eddie eventually shared with her a hidden cliff he often visited alone for its peaceful view.

As Albert’s abuse worsened, he began spending his nights in the living room, making it harder for Eddie to sneak out. Around the same time, the girl suddenly stopped appearing, no matter how often Eddie visited their usual meeting spot. Eddie wondered if she, too, was enduring abuse, as she always wore bandages and the same tattered dress.

When one of the family’s birds was killed by Albert and a cat became terminally ill, Eddie recalled the girl’s earlier words: “…Maybe everyone would be happiest if they became yours in the end.” This led him to believe that, if any pets died, he could make them truly happy and at peace by giving them a grave crafted with care, making them his “treasures” that no one could take away. Initially, he waited for natural deaths, but eventually concluded that animals killed by Albert would still “belong” to Albert even in death. He decided to claim the sick cat for himself, killing it with his shovel and burying it, believing he had ended its suffering. From then on, Eddie killed nearly all the family pets, offering them kind words before each death and genuinely believing his actions were an act of love.

After many nights, the girl finally returned, in much worse condition weak, injured, and barely able to stand. Eddie helped her to the cliff, where she revealed she had run away from an abusive foster family and believed she would never be anyone’s treasure, describing herself as someone who “didn’t exist.” Fearing she would die and be forgotten in an unmarked grave, Eddie decided to make her his final and most cherished treasure.

In the game, their final conversation reveals Eddie’s conflicted feelings; the girl gradually understands his intentions and smiles before he kills her. He cries both before and after her death, believing it was for the best. In the manga, this scene is portrayed with Eddie displaying manic joy during the act, rather than sorrow.

The exact circumstances of how Eddie became the B4 floor master are unknown, though it is believed Abraham Gray brought him into the building. In Episode 0, Eddie appears to have known Gray before Danny or Cathy, assisting him in burying the body of an escaped prisoner killed by Danny.

Role in the Story

Eddie is introduced in Satsuriku no Tenshi (Angels of Death) as the master of Floor B4, where Rachel Gardner and Zack arrive after surviving the trials of the lower floors. His primary goal is to kill Rachel and bury her, believing that fulfilling her wish to die will create a bond of “mutual love” and allow him to keep her as his most precious “treasure” for eternity.

Throughout Episode 3, Eddie attempts multiple times to persuade Rachel to accept his offer, often approaching her with politeness and sincerity. However, his advances are repeatedly interrupted by Zack, whose presence infuriates Eddie. This interference not only prevents him from being the one to kill Rachel but also fuels his growing resentment toward Zack, culminating in direct conflict between the two.

Despite his childlike demeanor and playful mannerisms, Eddie proves to be a persistent and dangerous opponent, using his speed, agility, and skill with a shovel to corner his targets. His determination to claim Rachel’s life escalates into desperation, leading him to lash out when she ultimately rejects him. Eddie’s arc on B4 ends with his defeat at the hands of Zack, bringing an end to his pursuit of Rachel.

In the spin-off Angels of Death: Episode. Eddie, his backstory is expanded, revealing the experiences and motivations that shaped his obsession with graves, “mutual love,” and Rachel herself.

Relationships

Rachel Gardner – Eddie becomes infatuated with Rachel at first sight, immediately deciding that he wants to kill her and bury her in one of his graves. He prepares what he considers his finest grave for her, believing that they share a deep similarity—both yearning for something they can truly call their own. Eddie often compares himself to Rachel, convinced they are “meant for each other,” and repeatedly tries to persuade her to choose him as the one to end her life instead of Zack. Her continual rejection only fuels his obsession, intensifying his desire to make her his “treasure” through death.

Zack – Eddie harbors a strong dislike for Zack, viewing him as the primary obstacle preventing him from claiming Rachel. This animosity is exacerbated when Zack destroys several of Eddie’s graves, prompting Eddie to prepare the worst grave he had ever made specifically for Zack, leaving it half-finished. Eddie’s resentment peaks when Rachel chooses Zack over him, leading him to throw a tantrum and insult Zack, calling him “dumb” and “more of a brat” than himself. Zack reciprocates the hostility, mocking Eddie as a “damn brat” and “grave-digging shit-head” for his arrogance and interference.

Shin – Shin appears exclusively in Episode.0 of the Angels of Death books and was initially intended to be the floor master of B4. He first encounters Eddie after accidentally leaving his notebook at a church, where Eddie mistakes him for a grave desecrator. After clearing up the misunderstanding, the two develop a mutual respect, with Eddie even appreciating Shin’s “art” due to the care and effort behind it. Shin’s fate is left ambiguous, though it is implied that he may have died by suicide.

Legacy

Eddie has become one of the most memorable antagonists in Angels of Death due to the contrast between his childlike innocence and the disturbing nature of his actions. His tragic backstory, revealed in Episode.Eddie, gave fans a deeper understanding of his obsession with graves and his desperate need for affection, transforming him from a one-dimensional villain into a sympathetic yet unsettling character.

His distinctive burlap mask, shovel weapon, and vibrant personality have made him a fan-favorite in the series’ community, often appearing in official merchandise, fan art, and cosplay. Eddie’s dynamic with Rachel and rivalry with Zack remain popular discussion points among fans, especially regarding the blurred line between his twisted love and his desire for possession. In extended media, such as the manga adaptation and spin-off content, Eddie’s role has been expanded, further cementing his status as one of the franchise’s most iconic floor masters.

Trivia

    • Eddie’s mask is sometimes shown making facial expressions, though this is likely done for dramatic effect and to better convey his emotions to the audience.

        • The name Edward means “protector” or “guardian,” while Mason means “stoneworker,” fitting his role as a grave keeper.
          • Eddie’s face is never revealed in the original game, but both the manga and anime depict him with messy orange hair, emerald green eyes, and a face dotted with freckles.
