Edelgard

Edelgard is one of the prominent characters in the How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord (Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu) series. She is a Fallen, a race of demonic beings, and serves as a commanding officer within their hierarchy. Edelgard is first introduced riding a dragon-like creature, though in battle, she dismounts and fights directly using her spear after her beast is rendered immobile by fear.

Edelgard leads the Fallen assault on the city of Faltra and acts as the superior officer of Gregore, another high-ranking Fallen. However, during the conflict, she and her forces are overwhelmingly defeated by Diablo, who uses supreme magic to decimate the enemy. Though most of the Fallen are destroyed, Edelgard survives left gravely injured but alive marking the beginning of a more complex role in the story that goes beyond that of a simple antagonist.

Appearance in Anime

Edelgard is a short yet strikingly beautiful Fallen with distinct demonic features. She has brown, scale-like skin, giving her a reptilian texture, along with long silver hair that flows down to her waist. Her large golden eyes, with vertically slit pupils, resemble those of a reptile and exude a childish yet eerie ambiance.

In battle, Edelgard dons a jet-black full-body armor, complete with a helmet, emphasizing her status as a warrior and commander among the Fallen. Her imposing appearance and demonic aura serve to highlight her role as a powerful combatant.

Later in the series, after deciding to ally with Diablo’s group to stay close to Demon King Krebskulm, Edelgard adopts a civilian disguise to avoid drawing attention. When she and Krebskulm are discovered by Mei, a shopkeeper who values them as paying customers, Mei assists them in hiding their identities through makeup and costume. Edelgard’s scaly skin is concealed, giving her a smooth and glossy complexion. She wears black tights, white gloves, and thick glasses to hide her reptilian eyes. Additionally, her forelocks are styled to obscure her pupils, completing the transformation. In this form, Edelgard resembles a refined high-class maid, a stark contrast to her usual demonic appearance.

Personality

As a member of the Fallen, Edelgard initially presents herself as a ruthless and formidable combatant, especially during her assault on the city of Faltra. However, unlike many other Fallen who are often portrayed as violent, sadistic, or unpredictable Edelgard displays a more noble and composed temperament, aligning her with the so-called “moderate” faction of the Fallen.

She is characterized by her bravery, loyalty, and a surprising inclination toward peaceful solutions when possible. Despite being a warrior, Edelgard shows a willingness to cooperate with former enemies and make rational decisions for the sake of long-term goals. Her honesty and honor-bound nature distinguish her from the more savage behavior commonly associated with her race.

Edelgard’s speech is also unique she often speaks in broken or fragmented sentences, adding to her distinct personality and highlighting her identity as a non-human character.

Background

Edelgard served as a commander within the Fallen ranks, leading a formidable army of 100 Fallen soldiers during their invasion of the city of Faltra. Her leadership position and strength in battle earned her significant status among her kind. In addition to her commanding role, Edelgard holds the title of a Dragon Knight, capable of riding and commanding dragon-like beasts in combat.

Despite her initial opposition to the protagonists, Edelgard’s path shifts after her defeat at the hands of Diablo. Left barely alive by his overwhelming magic, her experience and evolving perspective lead her to reconsider her loyalties. She eventually chooses to align herself with Diablo’s group, seeking to remain close to Demon King Krebskulm, whose revival plays a central role in her motivations.

Plot

Volume 1
In her first major appearance, Edelgard leads a Fallen army of 100 soldiers to Fort Bridge Ulug, serving as a diversionary force while her subordinate, Gregore, is tasked with infiltrating Faltra City to dismantle the city’s magical barrier. Her strategic deployment is part of a larger offensive by the Fallen against human territories.

During the battle, Edelgard encounters a mysterious lone Demon, Diablo who had already defeated 30 of her troops singlehandedly. Recognizing his strength, she dismounts from her dragon-like beast, which had become paralyzed with fear in Diablo’s presence, and chooses to confront him directly. This marks the beginning of her conflict with Diablo, which would ultimately end in her defeat and near death at the hands of his overwhelming magical power.

Abilities

Edelgard is regarded as the strongest spear-wielder among the Fallen, possessing both exceptional combat skill and commanding presence on the battlefield. Her proficiency in close-quarters combat makes her a formidable opponent even among elite demonic warriors.

Based on Diablo’s in-world knowledge of the game mechanics, he estimates Edelgard’s level to be above 80, placing her significantly above the average adventurer or soldier. Her most powerful technique, known as (Sacrifice Charge), channels her energy into a devastating, high-risk attack capable of overwhelming powerful enemies.

Following her alliance with Demon King Krebskulm, Edelgard receives a direct infusion of power from the revived Demon Lord. This enhancement raises her base power to the level of her former trump card, effectively giving her the strength of her ultimate move as her new standard. With this increase, Edelgard surpasses her previous limits and becomes an even more dangerous force in battle.

Etymology

The name Edelgard is of German origin, composed of the elements “adel” meaning “noble”, and “gard” meaning “enclosure” or “protection”. The name conveys a sense of noble guardianship or a protector of high status fitting for her role as a commanding and principled figure among the Fallen.

Edelgard also shares her name with Edelgard von Hresvelg, a prominent character and the leader of the Black Eagles house in the video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
