Donquixote Doflamingo, nicknamed “Heavenly Yaksha,” is the captain of the Donquixote Pirates and a former Warlord of the Sea with a frozen bounty of Beli340,000,000. Once one of the most influential underworld brokers under the codename “Joker,” Doflamingo was a key figure in the pirate world and the underworld. He is a former World Noble, descended from the Donquixote Family, though his rejection by his noble lineage shaped much of his ruthless and tyrannical nature. Doflamingo ruled Dressrosa as king after forcibly taking the throne from Riku Doldo III. His reign of terror came to an end when he was defeated by Monkey D. Luffy during the Dressrosa Arc. Following his capture by Admiral Fujitora, Doflamingo was imprisoned in Level 6 of Impel Down. Vegapunk later cloned Doflamingo as one of the Seraphim to replace the Warlords.
Background
Appearance in Anime
Born into the Donquixote Family, Doflamingo was a World Noble by birth. However, his father, Donquixote Homing, chose to renounce their status and live as ordinary citizens, leading to the family being ostracized and targeted by those who despised the Celestial Dragons. This rejection and suffering fueled Doflamingo’s hatred for both his father and humanity. After killing his father and later his brother Rosinante, whom he viewed as traitors, Doflamingo forged his own path as a pirate and criminal mastermind.
Using his cunning and charisma, he rose to power, becoming the captain of the Donquixote Pirates and a Warlord of the Sea. His influence extended into the underworld, where he operated as “Joker,” a notorious broker dealing in weapons, artificial Devil Fruits, and other illicit activities. Eight years before the series began, he seized control of Dressrosa, ruling it tyrannically until his defeat.
Appearance
Doflamingo is a tall, lean man with sharp features, golden-blond hair, and distinctive pink sunglasses that obscure his eyes. His flamboyant and striking appearance includes a feathered pink coat, bright patterned clothing, and an ever-present smirk. His commanding presence and vibrant attire reflect his confident, arrogant, and theatrical personality.
Personality
Doflamingo is ruthless, manipulative, and sadistic, reveling in the suffering of others while wielding his power with cruelty. Despite his villainous nature, he is also highly intelligent and charismatic, capable of inspiring loyalty from his crew and manipulating powerful allies and enemies alike. His deep-seated hatred for the Celestial Dragons, combined with his disdain for ordinary people, drives his belief in “the survival of the fit.”
Though he thrives on chaos, Doflamingo is pragmatic and calculating, often staying several steps ahead of his enemies. His twisted sense of loyalty and complex relationships with his crew and family hint at a deeper, more conflicted side to his character.
Role in the Story
Skypiea Saga
Doflamingo is first introduced during the epilogue of the Skypiea Saga as the superior of Bellamy the Hyena. His early appearances foreshadow his influence in the underworld and his connection to significant events in the Grand Line.
Marineford Arc
As a Warlord of the Sea, Doflamingo participates in the Summit War of Marineford, fighting alongside the Marines. His chaotic and unpredictable nature is showcased as he battles without allegiance, embodying his philosophy of dominance and power.
Dressrosa Saga
Doflamingo serves as the main antagonist of the Dressrosa Arc and Saga. His tyrannical rule over Dressrosa, manipulation of its citizens through his Devil Fruit powers, and orchestration of the SMILE artificial Devil Fruit trade drive the events of the saga. His battle against Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates culminates in his defeat, marking one of the most significant victories for the crew and their allies.
Post-Dressrosa
After his defeat, Doflamingo is imprisoned in Level 6 of Impel Down, though his influence lingers. Vegapunk clones him as one of the Seraphim to replace the Warlords, highlighting his continued relevance in the series’ overarching narrative.
