Derek van Dam
Derek Van Damis a weather anchor forCNNInternational, based at the network’s headquarters in Atlanta. He provides weather reports and science bulletins on weekday and weekend editions of ‘CNN Newsroom.’ Van Dam is a “Certified Broadcast Meteorologist” by the American Meteorological Society (AMS), a designation which recognizes excellence in his field.
Education & Career
Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Van Dam’s journey into meteorology began at Central Michigan University, where he pursued studies in Meteorology & Broadcast/Cinematic Arts. His career took flight as a morning weather anchor at an NBC affiliate in Flint, Michigan, laying the groundwork for his subsequent achievements. Prior to his role at CNN International, Van Dam made significant strides in elevating weather broadcasting standards across Africa as the Chief Meteorologist at eNews Channel Africa. Leading a team of seven meteorologists & climatologists, he anchored daily weather bulletins for the station’s flagship news shows, leaving an indelible mark on the continent. His passion for humanitarianism led him to South Africa through his work with “The Compassionate Life Foundation,” ultimately leading him to embrace the region and establish South Africa’s inaugural 24-hour news channel in 2008 from Cape Town.
Currently based in Atlanta with his wife, Van Dam finds solace in extreme sports such as surfing and sailing. His adventurous spirit extends to his love for Ultra Marathon running, having conquered two of South Africa’s most challenging single-day road and trail events.
