Derek Miller was a 17-year-old senior student at East Henderson High School. Miller and his family were members of the Crab Creek Baptist Church, where his parents are leaders in their fellowship. [-1]Miller admired the sport of basketball, and his favorite player was Michael Jordan. [6]Family, friends and contemporaries remember Miller of being full of life and for immensely caring for others.
Death
On December 22nd just before 8:00 pm, Miller was driving his Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck when a white BMW driven by Matthew Schmieder collided into Miller’s vehicle. [2]The incident happened on Kanuga Road in Hendersonville, NC. [3]Schmieder was illegally driving without a license in a no passing zone when he collided head-on into miller. Schmieder was driving 50-60 mph and alcohol possibly had played a factor in the accident. [2]Miller was pronounced dead soon after the accident while Schmieder remains in critical condition. [3]
