Demri Parrott

Demri Lara Parrott, born on February 22, 1969, was primarily recognized for her relationship with Layne Staley, the lead singer of the rock band Alice in Chains. Born in Bremerton, Washington, to Kathleen Austin and Dennis Dougherty, on February 22, 1969, she also went by the surname Murphy and had three younger brothers, Devin, Derek, and David. Demri attended school in Arlington, Washington, and had diverse interests including philosophy, poetry, decoupage, art, and theater. However, she dropped out of high school during her junior year and relocated to Seattle, aspiring to become a model or actress.

Demri and Layne Staley met at a party in the late 1980s and began a relationship. They were thanked in the liner notes of Alice in Chains’ debut album “Facelift” (1990). Although widely believed to be the woman on the cover of the band’s second album, “Dirt,” this was later revealed to be actress Mariah O’Brien.

During their relationship, both Demri and Staley struggled with heroin addiction. Although they became engaged in 1992, they separated sometime between 1993 and 1994. Demri was featured in the artwork of Mad Season’s only album, “Above,” released in 1995. The song “Lifeless Dead,” written by Staley, is believed to be about the end of their relationship.

Unfortunately, due to her drug abuse, Demri faced significant health challenges and underwent several open-heart surgeries. Tragically, she passed away on October 29, 1996, at the age of 27, from endocarditis caused by a heroin overdose at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, Washington. Demri was laid to rest at the Ivy Green Cemetery in Bremerton.

Six years later, on April 5, 2002, Layne Staley also passed away.
