Dejuan Yourse
Dejuan Yourse, a resident of Greensboro, North Carolina, was subjected to a wrongful arrest by Police Officer Travis B. Cole. The incident occurred while Dejuan was peacefully waiting for his mother on her porch.
Wrongful Arrest
On June 17th, 2016, Dejuan sat on his mother’s porch waiting for her arrival as he had forgotten his keys to get inside.
Two police officers from the Greensboro Police Department received a call regarding suspicious activity and a break-in and were dispatched to investigate.
When they arrived they saw Dejuan calmly waiting for his mother to arrive to the house.
He spoke with Cole and explained to him that he had grown up in the home but that he didn’t have the keys with him.
He pleaded with the cop to ask his neighbors regarding his identity.
He phones his mother to get her to speak with police officer Cole, but the call goes to voicemail, as Dejuan explains that she is held up in traffic.
He also gives the name of his mother along with his identification in order to verify his innocence.
As Dejuan stands up, Cole puts his hands on him and asks him to sit down.
After Dejuan sits, Cole snatches the phone away from Dejuan while talking to someone asking the person to come to his house because: “the police is over here and they harassing me.”
Cole begins to berate him and decides to throw Dejuan on the floor and handcuff him.
Cole along with the other officer throw Dejuan on the front yard as he protests the arrests yelling: “You hit me on the forehead”.
The time of the arrest has footage from the Body cameras of the two police officers at the scene.
Due to the violent treatment of Dejuan and the excessive force caught on camera, Officer Cole was stripped of his credentials as a Police Officer by the Greensboro, North Carolina City council members.
