Racist Incident

On May 21st, 2017, Eva Hicks, a Latina woman from Pennsylvania, was at the Centerton Neighborhood Market in Arkansas when she encountered Deborah. While waiting for her medicine, Eva got into an argument with an older white woman who made xenophobic and racist remarks. A black woman nearby called out the older woman for being ignorant, prompting the older woman to use a racial slur. Despite the assistant store manager intervening, Deborah continued to berate Eva. Ultimately, the worker insisted that Deborah leave the store for her inappropriate language, not Eva.
Reaction
The incident caused a social media frenzy as thousands flooded Eva’s Facebook with messages of support and solidarity in response to the racism she endured from Deborah. Notably, writer and journalist Shaun King amplified the video by sharing it on both his Facebook and Twitter accounts.
On May 24th, Charles Crowson, the senior manager of corporate communications the Walmart locale where the incident took place, has stated that she will be banned from the store.
