Deborah Danner, a 66-year-old resident of Bronx, New York, had a history of schizophrenia and mental illness, prompting regular police visits to her apartment. In October 2016, Officer Hugh Barry responded to her apartment following a report from a neighbor about her engaging in threatening behavior. According to police, she was armed with scissors. Officer Barry reportedly persuaded her to drop the scissors, but she then advanced toward him with a baseball bat. He fired two shots, resulting in her death. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner O’Neill, among others, have questioned the shooting of an elderly, naked woman with a history of mental health issues.
