Death, also known as Lord Death (死神様, Shinigami-sama) and the Grim Reaper (死神, Shinigami), is a god and the current headmaster of Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA). He is the meister partner of Spirit Albarn, the current Death Scythe, and the father of Death the Kid. Death is a pivotal figure in maintaining world order and overseeing the operations of the DWMA to prevent the rise of Kishins.
Appearance
Appearance in manga
Death has a striking and humorous appearance. His body is tall and slender, draped in a black cloak with a white skull-like mask featuring three large spikes on either side, giving him an imposing yet comedic look. His white gloves are oversized and shaped like large mittens, adding to his quirky demeanor. His design reflects his role as a protector, blending the menacing aspect of a Grim Reaper with a child-friendly persona to foster a positive environment for the academy.
When interacting with students and staff, Death adopts a lighthearted tone, waving his mitten-like hands in playful gestures and speaking with exaggerated enthusiasm. However, his demeanor becomes serious and foreboding when addressing threats to the world or dealing with matters concerning Kishins.
Personality
Death is a benevolent and approachable leader, known for his cheerful and quirky personality. His playful mannerisms and humorous speech make him a popular figure among DWMA students and faculty. Despite his lightheartedness, Death is a wise and strategic thinker, capable of grave seriousness when the situation demands it.
He has an unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and protecting the world from the influence of madness. This is evident in his decision to found the DWMA as a proactive measure to train future generations to combat evil and sustain order. His dual nature—lighthearted yet deeply responsible—makes him a respected and loved figure at the academy.
As a father, Death is deeply proud of Death the Kid, whom he created as a piece of himself. He often displays affection for Kid while gently teasing him about his obsession with symmetry, though he never fails to support him in his endeavors.
Role in the Story
Death serves as a guiding figure for the DWMA, shaping its curriculum and overseeing its students’ development. His leadership is instrumental in preparing the academy’s meisters and weapons to face emerging threats, including the Kishin Asura.
His relationship with his son, Death the Kid, plays a significant role in the narrative, as Kid grapples with his responsibilities as a Shinigami and his desire to uphold his father’s legacy. Death’s history with Asura is also a key element of the story, revealing the tragic consequences of madness and the lengths Death has gone to protect the world.
