Death the Kid

Death the Kid, often referred to as simply Kid (キッド, Kiddo), is the second son of Death himself and the meister of the Demon Twin Guns, Liz Thompson and Patty Thompson. Kid was created from a piece of Death’s own soul, making him a shinigami with unique abilities and responsibilities. Known for his exceptional combat skills and intelligence, Kid is regarded as one of the top three EAT students at the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA).

Following his father’s death during the connection of the Lines of Sanzu and the defeat of Asura on the Moon, Kid inherits his father’s title and position, becoming the new Shinigami-sama (Lord Death) and the headmaster of DWMA. With this new role, Kid takes on the monumental task of leading the academy and maintaining order in the world.

Appearance in manga

Kid has a striking appearance, defined by his jet-black hair adorned with three white stripes on the left side of his head, called the Lines of Sanzu, which signify his status as a shinigami. His golden eyes reflect both his sharp intellect and supernatural lineage. Kid is known for his impeccable sense of style, usually wearing a black suit with white rectangular stripes, a white shirt, and a skull tie. This formal attire complements his obsession with symmetry, which influences every aspect of his life.

When Kid’s Lines of Sanzu connect, usually during moments of extreme emotional or physical duress, his powers increase dramatically, signaling his readiness to take on the full responsibilities of a shinigami. After fully assuming the role of Shinigami-sama, his Lines of Sanzu remain permanently connected.

Personality

Kid’s defining personality trait is his obsession with symmetry, which he considers the ultimate form of perfection. He strives for balance in all things, to the point where asymmetry causes him intense distress, anxiety, and even paralysis. This fixation often leads to comical situations, such as interrupting a mission to rearrange objects or agonizing over minor details in his appearance.

Despite his quirks, Kid is disciplined, intelligent, and highly responsible, especially when it comes to his duties as a meister and future leader. He values order and balance, not just aesthetically but also in how the world operates. Kid’s determination to create a harmonious and just society drives many of his actions, including his vision of uniting humanity and witches under the same moral code.

Kid is also deeply loyal and compassionate toward his friends and teammates. His bond with Liz and Patty goes beyond that of meister and weapons; he views them as family and relies on their contrasting personalities to ground him during moments of insecurity.

Role in the Story

Kid’s journey in Soul Eater revolves around his growth as both a meister and a future leader. Initially focused on achieving perfection and symmetry, he gradually learns to balance his ideals with the complexities of the world. His role becomes pivotal during the battle against Asura, where he connects the Lines of Sanzu and ascends to his full shinigami form, cementing his position as the new Lord Death.

As headmaster of DWMA, Kid envisions a world where humans and witches coexist peacefully, working toward a future free from the destructive influence of madness.
