Crona

Crona, infamously known as the Demon Sword (魔剣, Maken), is a demon sword master  and the biological child of the witch Medusa Gorgon. As the meister partner of the actual demon sword Ragnarok, Crona was raised and manipulated by their mother to pursue her goal of creating a Kishin. Crona is a deeply conflicted individual, torn between the influence of Medusa’s cruel upbringing and their own desires for acceptance and belonging.

Appearance

Crona wielding the Black Sword, Ragnarok

Crona has an androgynous appearance, characterized by their thin build, pink hair, lavender eyes, and tall stature. Their short hair is styled unevenly, with several long, chunky clumps and straight-cut bangs that end just above the eyebrows, though the strands lack uniformity. Two long pieces of hair extend from their bangs, hanging low over Crona’s face and adding to their unkempt and timid appearance.

Crona’s usual attire consists of a long, black, old-style robe that is tight-fitting and ends at the mid-calf. The robe is distinguished by large white cuff-links at the sleeves and a tall white button-up collar at the neck. Completing the outfit are black, slipper-like shoes with a tall white cuff protruding from the top, further accentuating their simple and subdued look. For formal occasions, Crona wears a white suit consisting of plain long pants, a long-sleeved coat with a tall collar, and minimal embellishments, reflecting their reserved nature. The coat fastens at both the front and back, giving the ensemble a sleek yet stark appearance.

Crona’s soul, when viewed in its hitomi form, appears as a normal, lightly colored soul. However, when expanded, it adopts a darker tone, mirroring the emotional and mental turmoil they endure.

As a child, Crona wore a black knee-length dress with a rugged, cut-out design at the hem adorned with white diamond-shaped patterns. This outfit also featured a white collar and cuffs, reminiscent of their present-day attire. Their shoes remained largely unchanged, while their hair was shorter and simpler but retained the same general design. During this stage, Crona also had larger pupils, giving their younger self a more innocent and vulnerable appearance.

Personality

Crona is described by Franken Stein through Soul Perception as having an “introverted” personality, marked by intense shyness, nervousness, and a tendency toward self-loathing. Having been raised by the manipulative and abusive Medusa Gorgon, Crona exhibits extreme negativity and submissiveness, compounded by the constant bullying from their weapon partner, Ragnarok. Their lack of confidence and overwhelming anxiety often lead Crona to repeatedly state they “don’t know how to deal with” various situations, actions, or individuals, causing them to mentally and emotionally shut down from their surroundings.

Crona’s unbalanced state of mind and inclination toward insanity make them a dangerous and unpredictable enemy. This instability stems from the Madness caused by the Black Blood, as well as the severe psychological abuse they endured under both Ragnarok and Medusa. Medusa’s brutal conditioning—aimed at making Crona an effective killer—warped their sense of morality and left them incapable of understanding basic concepts of right and wrong. As a result, Crona often exhibits erratic and aggressive behavior, spouting nonsensical remarks or laughing maniacally during tense moments. This warped mindset drove them toward the goal of becoming a Kishin, an aspiration shaped by their desperate need to gain Medusa’s approval and avoid abandonment.

Despite their bleak outlook, Crona begins to exhibit more positive traits after meeting Maka Albarn and enrolling at the DWMA. Maka’s kindness and determination inspire Crona to feel the need to protect her, fostering the beginnings of a healthier self-image. Their time at Death City and the DWMA brings about a visible change, with Crona becoming more relaxed and even happy in demeanor. However, this progress is undone when Medusa forcibly reintroduces the Madness mindset, erasing much of Crona’s development and causing them to revert to their destructive tendencies.

Eventually, Crona reclaims their sense of self after Medusa’s death and their confrontation with Asura. Reflecting on their actions, Crona finds them unforgivable but resolves to atone. In a final act of heroism, they choose to seal themselves alongside Asura using the Black Blood and BREW, sacrificing their freedom for Maka and the greater good. In the anime, Crona develops enough confidence to reject Medusa’s cruelty and fully integrate into the DWMA without succumbing to Madness.

Crona’s personality is also marked by several unique quirks. Their extreme negativity has been shown to have “destructive power,” as demonstrated by their poetry, which can evoke existential regret even in individuals like Black☆Star or Sid. Crona has a habit of redundantly reminding others of their Black Blood during battles and nervously naming parts of rooms, such as “Roomsky Kornerkov” (referred to as “Mr. Corner” in the anime). Their shuffling footsteps and awkward demeanor further emphasize their nervous and withdrawn nature.

Role in the Story

Crona is introduced as an antagonist, carrying out Medusa’s orders to create chaos and advance her plans for awakening a Kishin. They initially clash with Maka and Soul, forming a rivalry with the duo that highlights Crona’s tragic backstory and internal struggles.

Over time, Crona’s interactions with Maka lead to a gradual shift in their character. Maka’s unwavering kindness and belief in Crona’s potential for redemption become a turning point, inspiring them to break free from Medusa’s control and seek a new path.

Despite their redemption arc, Crona’s journey remains fraught with challenges, as they continue to grapple with their past and the lingering influence of Medusa’s manipulation. Their ultimate role in the series underscores the themes of forgiveness, self-discovery, and the struggle to overcome one’s demons.

Relationship

Medusa Gorgon: Crona’s mother and primary antagonist in their life. Medusa’s manipulative and abusive treatment left deep scars on Crona, shaping their insecurities and destructive tendencies.

Ragnarok: Crona’s weapon partner and constant companion. While Ragnarok is often cruel and domineering, their relationship evolves over time, reflecting Crona’s own growth.

Maka Albarn: Maka becomes one of Crona’s first true friends, offering them kindness and support despite their troubled past. Her influence is pivotal in Crona’s journey toward redemption.

Soul Eater Evans: Although initially adversarial, Soul eventually develops a begrudging respect for Crona, particularly after seeing their efforts to change.

Abilities

  • Demon Sword Mastery
Crona wields Ragnarok, a living demon sword capable of changing shape and emitting destructive soundwaves. As a weapon, Ragnarok amplifies Crona’s combat abilities, allowing them to perform devastating attacks such as the Screech Alpha and Screech Beta techniques.

  • Black Blood
Crona’s body is infused with Black Blood, a substance created by Medusa that grants them enhanced durability and regeneration. Black Blood also allows Ragnarok to manifest outside of Crona’s body and function as both a weapon and a shield. However, its influence also intensifies Crona’s instability and aggression.

  • Soul Wavelength Attacks
By resonating their soul wavelength with Ragnarok, Crona can perform powerful techniques such as theBloody Needle, which involves manipulating Black Blood into sharp projectiles.

  • Unpredictable Combat Style
Crona’s erratic and unorthodox fighting style makes them a difficult opponent to predict or counter. Their reliance on Black Blood and Ragnarok’s transformations adds further complexity to their combat strategies.

Trivia

    • Crona’s gender is intentionally ambiguous in the original Japanese version of the series. The English dub refers to Crona with male pronouns, but this remains a subject of fan interpretation.
      • Ragnarok often serves as comic relief despite his menacing appearance, frequently teasing or bullying Crona in humorous ways.
      • Crona’s Black Blood is a recurring motif in the series, symbolizing both their strength and the emotional burdens they carry.
      • Crona’s phrase, “I don’t know how to deal with this,” has become one of their most iconic lines, reflecting their shy and awkward nature.
