Conan Edogawa

Conan Edogawa (江戸川 コナン, Edogawa Konan) is the central protagonist of the manga and anime series Detective Conan. Born as Shinichi Kudo (工藤 新一, Kudō Shin’ichi), he is a brilliant high school detective whose life takes a dramatic turn after being forced to ingest a mysterious drug, APTX 4869, which physically transforms him into a child. To uncover the truth behind the enigmatic organization responsible for the drug, Shinichi adopts the alias “Conan Edogawa” and moves in with his childhood friend and love interest, Ran Mouri, and her father, Kogoro Mouri, a private detective. While living with them, Conan assists Kogoro in solving cases, all while secretly pursuing leads about the shadowy organization.

Appearance

Conan Edogawa has dark brown hair that falls naturally downward, framing his striking blue eyes. However, a few strands of hair at the front and back of his head stick up, giving him a slightly tousled look. To distinguish himself from his true identity as Shinichi Kudo, Conan wears a pair of glasses borrowed from his father, completing the illusion of his new childlike persona.

Personality

Despite his transformation into a child, Shinichi Kudo’s keen intellect and deductive prowess remain fully intact. As Conan Edogawa, Shinichi adopts the demeanor of a typical child to avoid suspicion. He affectionately addresses Ran Mouri as “Ran-neechan” (with nee-chan being a term Japanese children use for older sisters or admired young women) and refers to his real identity as “Shinichi-niichan” (nii-chan meaning older brother).

Shinichi, in his guise as Conan, maintains a close bond with Ran, who is deeply protective of him. However, Conan’s true identity remains a secret from her, often leading to awkward or bittersweet moments. For instance, he once found himself listening to Ran confess her feelings for Shinichi—a situation that left him conflicted. Similarly, his role as a child has placed him in uncomfortable scenarios, such as when Ran invited him to bathe with her at a hot spring, oblivious to his real age.

Conan possesses an encyclopedic knowledge across a wide range of subjects, which proves invaluable in solving mysteries and navigating dangerous situations. Although he makes a conscious effort to speak and act like a child when interacting with adults, his natural intelligence sometimes slips through. In such moments, Conan finds himself discussing advanced topics or reasoning far beyond what a normal child would know. To cover his tracks, he often attributes his knowledge to “something I saw on TV” or claims he learned it from “Uncle Kogoro,” “Professor Agasa,” or even “Shinichi-niichan.”

Background

Conan Edogawa
After narrowly escaping the skeptical yet well-meaning park security, Shinichi Kudo finds himself with no safe place to turn. Desperate, he returns to his home, where he encounters his next-door neighbor and close family friend, Professor Hiroshi Agasa. Recognizing Shinichi despite his childlike appearance, Agasa is quickly convinced of his identity. The two retreat to Shinichi’s home to strategize their next move.

During their discussion, Agasa warns Shinichi of the grave danger posed by the Black Organization — the shadowy group behind the drug that shrunk him. He emphasizes the importance of keeping Shinichi’s true identity a secret, as discovery would not only endanger Shinichi but also jeopardize the lives of anyone connected to him.

Abilities

Intellectual Abilities

Conan Edogawa retains all of Shinichi Kudo’s remarkable detective skills, even after his transformation. While Conan lacks the renowned reputation Shinichi once had, his sharp mind remains unchanged. He consistently displays an extraordinary ability to recall intricate details from investigations and other areas of interest. This consistent recall suggests he may possess a photographic memory, enabling him to manage such perfect retention effortlessly.

Physical Abilities

Conan’s athleticism carries over from his life as Shinichi, particularly his exceptional skills in soccer. However, his reduced physical strength as a child limits the power behind his moves. To compensate, Conan relies on Professor Agasa’s invention, the Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes, which allow him to deliver powerful, precise kicks. Using this signature technique, Conan can incapacitate criminals by striking them with soccer balls—or any similarly shaped object available in the moment.

Weaknesses

Tone-Deafness
One notable flaw carried over from his original form is Conan’s tone-deafness. His off-key singing is often apparent and has been pointed out by those around him, adding a humorous contrast to his otherwise flawless abilities.

Plot

Conan Arc

Shinichi Kudo adopts the alias Conan Edogawa after Ran Mouri asks for his name. Initially reluctant, Shinichi agrees to live with Ran and her father, Kogoro Mouri, when Professor Agasa suggests it. Agasa reasons that living with them would provide Conan an opportunity to investigate any cases related to the Black Organization that might arise, and Conan reluctantly agrees.

While returning to Ran’s house one day, Ran casually asks Conan if he has someone he likes. Conan denies it, only for Ran to confess that she has feelings for someone herself. Teasing her, Conan jokingly suggests the person she likes is Shinichi, which Ran admits is true, despite his flaws. This confession causes Conan to blush profusely, inadvertently revealing that Ran has feelings for Shinichi—something he hadn’t expected.

During a game convention, Conan encounters a mysterious member of the Black Organization, Tequila. Tequila is killed in an explosion meant for someone else, but Conan learns valuable information about a meeting place from the murderer. However, just as Conan reaches the bar, another explosion destroys the place, leaving him with no further leads.

Sherry Arc

Conan’s investigation leads him to meet Ai Haibara, a new transfer student who becomes an important ally. After a case, Ai reveals the name of the pill that was forcibly administered to Shinichi months earlier, as well as her true identity.

Vermouth Arc

In one case, Conan solves a string of serial murders, and the culprit reveals something crucial: dialing a specific phone number creates a tune known as “Seven Children,” which is linked to the Leader of the Black Organization. This revelation shocks Conan. Later, while camping with Agasa and the Detective Boys, Conan discusses the Boss’s email address with Agasa. Though Agasa suggests investigating, Conan wisely decides against attracting attention, considering the risks involved.

Conan then considers asking Detective Wataru Takagi to help trace the number, but Ai Haibara warns him that such an investigation would put Takagi—and everyone around him—at great risk. Conan then inquires about the Boss’s cell phone number, only for Ai to caution him that contacting it would be like opening a Pandora’s Box and should be avoided at all costs.

Kir Arc

In this arc, Conan learns about a new member of the Black Organization, Bourbon, through a phone call from Jodie. Bourbon is tasked with capturing Ai Haibara (Sherry), who is considered a traitor to the organization.

Rum Arc

Conan later inquires about Rum, the second-in-command of the Black Organization, but Ai Haibara reveals that she doesn’t know much about him. She offers only vague descriptions of Rum’s appearance, with some suggesting he could be a large muscular man, others claiming he might have a more feminine appearance, and a few even speculating that he could be an older man.

Gin
A key figure in Conan’s transformation, Gin is the one who administered the APTX 4869 poison to Shinichi Kudo at Tropical Land. He refers to Conan as a “sly fox” for almost deceiving Vodka while trying to acquire a DNA sample.

There are several moments when Ran begins to suspect Conan is Shinichi, but she is unable to figure out how he became so small.

Kogoro Mouri
Ran’s father and Conan’s current guardian. Initially, Conan has a rocky relationship with Kogoro, often using him as a “puppet” during investigations by using the Stun-Gun Wristwatch and Voice-Changing Bowtie. This results in the “Sleeping Kogoro” persona becoming famous, attracting more cases to the Mouri Detective Agency.

Although not related by blood, Agasa is a close family friend and the first person to know about Conan’s true identity. He plays a supportive role in Conan’s investigations and attempts to protect him from the Black Organization.

A mysterious man with multiple identities, including Toru Amuro and Bourbon (Black Organization member). Initially wary of Rei due to his connections with the Organization, Conan later learns of Rei’s true identity as Zero and sees him as a powerful ally against the Black Organization. Rei, on the other hand, respects Conan’s sharp detective abilities and sees him as a terrifying individual despite his young appearance.

Trivia

    • Shinichi Kudo’s alias “Conan Edogawa” was derived from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, and Edogawa Ranpo, the pen name of Japanese mystery writer Hirai Tarō. Hirai himself chose the name as a transliteration of Edgar Allan Poe.
    • In The Fist of Blue Sapphire, Conan adopts the persona of Arthur Hirai, combining Arthur Conan Doyle and Ranpo Edogawa’s real names.
    • Gosho Aoyama, the creator of Detective Conan, stated that Conan Edogawa’s hairstyle was designed in about a minute, inspired by Yaiba’s hair from Yaiba, with the added tuft modeled after the character Kabu from Sally the Witch.
    • Conan’s tuft of hair was also influenced by the character Shichimi from Niji-iro Tōgarashi.

    • “Ah-Le-Le?” is a common expression Conan uses when pointing out clues, a phrase often used by Japanese grade schoolers. It was later humorously used by Kogoro Mouri and Ai Haibara, who both mimic Conan’s childish mannerisms.
    • Conan’s poor singing became an ironic joke, especially since Minami Takayama, who voices Conan, is a well-known singer.
    • In episodes 81-82, Minami Takayama is kidnapped, and Conan, who sounds similar to her, tries to take her place at a concert. Despite the similar voices, their singing sounds completely different.

    • Conan was ranked 13th in Animage’s Best Character category in May 2023.
    • Due to his small stature, Conan can easily hide in various situations, including:
      • Concealing himself in a small compartment while being “hunted” by the Night Baron.
      • Hiding in Heiji’s jacket.
      • Hiding in a coin locker when Gin and Vodka are nearby.
