Clavis (クラヴィス, Kuravisu) is a supporting character in the anime Death Parade. He serves as the elevator operator within the tower that houses various arbiter-operated bars, including Quindecim. His primary role is to transport arbiters and guests between floors, often facilitating their movement to and from judgment arenas.
Though Clavis does not participate in the judgment process directly, he plays a crucial behind-the-scenes role in maintaining the smooth operation of the system. Always seen with a laid-back attitude and a toothy smile, Clavis brings a rare lightness to the otherwise tense and somber atmosphere of the arbiter world. Despite his minimal screen time, his presence adds charm and quiet support to the structure of Death Parade’s universe.
Appearance

Appearance in Anime
Clavis appears as a young man with a distinctive and stylish look, often seen with a wide grin and his eyes closed, adding to his playful and easygoing aura. He has spiky green hair with a prominent yellow streak on the left side of his bangs. The back of his head features a red undercut visible on both sides, enhancing his eccentric appearance. He also wears piercings, one on his right ear and another on his nose, further complementing his unconventional style.
His uniform consists of a light brown, blazer-like coat with a dark brown collar and cuffs, worn over a white shirt and a red tie. The coat features two vertical rows of yellow buttons, with yellow trim above the cuffs and around the hem. A decorative pin is fastened to the left side of his collar, likely signifying his role. He completes the outfit with brown pants, black leather shoes, and a pair of gloves, giving him a polished yet distinctive appearance suitable for his duties as the elevator operator.
Personality
Clavis is a mysterious yet cheerful individual who carries out his duties with consistent professionalism and a friendly attitude. While he maintains a formal tone in his role as elevator operator, he is almost always seen with a smile on his face, giving him a lighthearted and approachable presence amid the somber tone of the arbiter world.
Though he rarely plays a central role in the events of Death Parade, Clavis displays a clear sense of awareness and insight, often appearing at just the right time and offering subtle guidance. He has a playful side, enjoying the occasional drink, teasing others, or goofing around when appropriate, especially with more serious characters like Ginti or Decim. Despite his light attitude, he remains dependable and discreet, faithfully transporting arbiters and guests between floors without interfering in their judgments.
Plot
Clavis primarily appears in a supporting role throughout Death Parade, with most of his scenes involving the transportation of arbiters and guests between floors via the elevator he operates. His appearances are typically brief but provide a consistent presence within the structure of the afterlife system.
One of his more notable moments occurs after Nona intervenes in a fight between Ginti and Decim. Clavis lightens the mood by teasing Ginti and casually removing the test dummy used to evaluate Decim’s judgment, playfully informing Decim that he has the rest of the day off.
Clavis is also present as a guest during a mini concert hosted by Harada and Mayu Arita, where he is seen genuinely enjoying the performance, showcasing his more relaxed and sociable nature.
Later in the series, Oculus becomes suspicious of Nona and her motives. In his investigation, Oculus reads Clavis’s memories, though Clavis is unaware of what has occurred and is immediately dismissed, continuing his duties without realizing the implications.
In a more secretive and critical moment, Clavis assists Decim by escorting him and Chiyuki (the black-haired woman) to a hidden lower level, a place where discarded dummies are stored. This level is only accessible through a special key and elevator button, highlighting Clavis’s trusted role within the organization.
Later, he visits Ginti in the Viginti bar, inquiring about Memine, the cat often seen with Ginti. Upon learning that Memine has disappeared, Clavis simply asks for a drink, once again blending his lighthearted demeanor with quiet insight.
Relationships
Nona
Clavis shares a friendly and trusting relationship with Nona, acting as her loyal valet and assistant. He is one of the few characters aware of Decim’s unique nature an arbiter who has developed human emotions yet he never betrays that knowledge. Nona appears to trust Clavis deeply, relying on him for discreet tasks and transportation across floors. Though he maintains a playful attitude, Clavis carries out her requests efficiently and without question.
Decim
Clavis and Decim maintain a cordial and respectful relationship, consistently greeting each other politely and working together harmoniously. Though their interactions are brief, Clavis treats Decim with subtle warmth and seems to respect his approach to judgment, even if it differs from traditional arbiter standards. He also supports Decim in critical moments, such as escorting him and Chiyuki to the lowest floor upon request.
Ginti
Clavis shares a more complex relationship with Ginti, blending casual teasing with moments of genuine companionship. He often pokes fun at Ginti’s temper and rigidity, but their bond runs deeper than simple banter. After Memine the cat that Ginti had grown attached to disappears, Clavis is one of the few who visits and stays by Ginti’s side, showing quiet empathy. Despite Ginti’s more abrasive personality, Clavis’s continued presence reflects a mutual understanding between the two.
