Choso

Choso (脹相, Chōsō) is a supporting character in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. He is the eldest of the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings, which also include his younger brothers, Kechizu and Eso. Born from the experiments of Noritoshi Kamo, Choso and his brothers are half-human, half-cursed spirit hybrids. Initially aligned with Kenjaku’s alliance alongside Mahito, Choso’s loyalty shifts after uncovering the cruel truth of their origins and Kenjaku’s identity as their creator. Upon discovering his connection to Yuji Itadori, whom he recognizes as his “younger brother,” Choso becomes a valuable ally to Yuji and the Jujutsu Sorcerers.

Personality

Choso is fiercely loyal and protective of his brothers, carrying a deep sense of responsibility as their elder sibling. His initial alliance with Kenjaku and Mahito is driven by his desire to protect and avenge his brothers, Kechizu and Eso, but this shifts as he uncovers Kenjaku’s manipulative nature and the truth of their creation.

Choso is introspective and emotionally driven, often reflecting on the meaning of family and the sacrifices he is willing to make for those he loves. His connection to Yuji Itadori awakens his nurturing and compassionate side, and he quickly assumes the role of a protective older brother. Despite his serious demeanor, Choso has moments of humor, particularly when he interacts with Yuji, adding depth and relatability to his character.

Role in the Story

Allegiance to Kenjaku
Choso is introduced as a member of Kenjaku’s alliance, working alongside Mahito and other cursed spirits to achieve their goals. During this time, Choso is driven by a desire to protect his brothers and avenge their deaths at the hands of Jujutsu Sorcerers.

Conflict with Yuji Itadori
Choso initially fights against Yuji during the Shibuya Incident, fueled by his allegiance to Kenjaku and a desire for revenge. However, as the battle progresses, Choso experiences a sudden and inexplicable sense of familial connection to Yuji, which leads to his eventual change in allegiance.

Discovering the Truth
Choso learns that Kenjaku, in one of his past identities as Noritoshi Kamo, was responsible for the cruel creation of the Death Painting Wombs. This revelation, coupled with his recognition of Yuji as his “younger brother,” causes Choso to break ties with Kenjaku and Mahito, ultimately aligning himself with Yuji and the Jujutsu Sorcerers.

Abilities

Choso is a powerful combatant, combining cursed techniques with his unique Death Painting physiology:

Blood Manipulation: Choso’s inherited technique allows him to control his blood to devastating effect in combat. This includes:

Piercing Blood: A highly concentrated stream of blood fired at high speeds, capable of piercing through solid objects.

Supernova: Choso manipulates droplets of blood to create deadly projectiles that can attack enemies from multiple angles.

Enhanced Durability and Regeneration: As a Death Painting Womb, Choso’s body is incredibly resilient and can heal from injuries far faster than a normal human.

Tactical Intelligence: Choso is a strategic fighter, using his abilities with precision and adapting to his opponents’ techniques.

Relationships

  • Kechizu and Eso: Choso shares a deep bond with his younger brothers, seeing himself as their protector and caretaker. Their deaths leave a lasting emotional impact on him, motivating his initial alliance with Kenjaku.

  • Yuji Itadori: Choso recognizes Yuji as his “younger brother” through their shared connection to Kenjaku. This bond becomes a driving force for Choso’s actions, as he dedicates himself to protecting Yuji and aiding him in his battles.

  • Kenjaku: Choso despises Kenjaku after learning the truth of his origins and Kenjaku’s role in the creation and manipulation of the Death Painting Wombs

  • Mahito: Although initially aligned with Mahito, Choso distances himself from him as his priorities shift to protecting Yuji and opposing Kenjaku’s plans.

Legacy

Choso’s journey in Jujutsu Kaisen highlights themes of loyalty, family, and redemption. His shift from antagonist to ally adds depth to his character, making him a compelling figure in the series. As both a fearsome fighter and a protective older brother, Choso’s dedication to Yuji and his own personal growth leave a lasting impact on the narrative and its characters.

Trivia

    • Choso’s sense of familial connection to Yuji stems from Kenjaku’s role in both their origins. While not biologically related, their bond is rooted in cursed energy.
    • His topknot hairstyle and dark attire are inspired by traditional Japanese warrior aesthetics, emphasizing his stoic and protective nature.
    • Despite his serious personality, Choso’s moments of humor with Yuji, particularly his exaggerated “older brother” instincts, provide lighthearted relief in the series.
