Appearance in Anime

As a kunoichi and elite member of the Jinshin Clan, Chiyome is a hard-working, disciplined, and highly dedicated individual. She is deeply committed to her mission of freeing enslaved Beastmen from human captivity, a cause she pursues with unwavering determination. Serious and focused, Chiyome also exhibits a sharp intellect and a strong sense of intuition.

She demonstrates a keen curiosity and is an excellent judge of character. During her initial encounter with Arc and Ariane, she quickly deduces their intentions to liberate enslaved elves and even suspects that Arc may hail from the same world as the legendary Hattori Hanzo. Her ability to analyze situations and adapt accordingly makes her a skilled strategist and a reliable ally.

Chiyome is also capable of anticipating the actions of her companions, allowing her to work seamlessly alongside them during missions. Her combination of loyalty, intelligence, and tactical awareness proves invaluable to both Arc and Ariane.

Despite her serious nature, Chiyome occasionally shows a more human side particularly when it comes to physical insecurities. She displays mild jealousy toward women with larger busts, such as Ariane and her senior, Tsubone, which adds a touch of humor to her otherwise composed personality.

Appearance

Chiyome is a young girl with a distinctive and stealth-oriented appearance, suited to her role as a warrior of the Jinshin Clan. She dresses entirely in black, with a long red scarf trailing behind her like a tail, adding both flair and symbolism to her outfit. Her combat attire includes protective greaves on her legs, gauntlets on her arms, and a headband adorned with a metal plate that appears to have been charred black. To conceal her identity further, she wears a mask that covers her mouth.

Background

Chiyome, originally named Mia, was born into the Beastman race and later became a member of the Jinshin Clan, a secretive and elite group of ninjas devoted to protecting their people. After rising through the ranks due to her exceptional skills, she was granted the name Chiyome, a title given only to one of the six great fighters within the clan.

Her personal mission centers on liberating enslaved Beastmen who have been captured and sold by humans. This goal fuels her actions throughout the series and guides her encounters with other characters. It is during one such mission that she crosses paths with Arc and Ariane, initially wary of their intentions but quickly recognizing their shared commitment to justice and liberation. Her instincts prove correct, and the three eventually form a strong alliance.

Chiyome’s deep sense of loyalty to her clan and people defines much of her character. She views the suffering of the enslaved Beastmen not only as a political issue but also as a deeply personal one, motivating her tireless efforts to bring them freedom and dignity. Despite her youth, she holds significant influence and is entrusted with delicate operations by her superiors.

Abilities and Powers

As one of the six great fighters of the Jinshin Clan, Chiyome is highly skilled in combat, stealth, and infiltration. Her expertise as a kunoichi makes her a formidable opponent, both in direct battle and covert operations. In addition to her physical training, Chiyome has a spirit crystal embedded in her body, which serves as a magical conduit, allowing her to use powerful water-based ninjutsu. This crystal functions as a spiritual contract, enabling her to manipulate water for both offensive and defensive purposes.

Chiyome’s mastery over water magic grants her a variety of techniques. She can form sharp water needles to launch at enemies, trap opponents inside a water prison that immobilizes them, and create water clones so convincing that even highly perceptive individuals are unable to distinguish them from the original. Among her more specialized techniques is the blood water needle, which combines water with the victim’s own blood to produce a piercing projectile, hinting at a more sinister, reactive nature. She can also summon water wolves, animated constructs that pursue and attack enemies with relentless aggression.

While her primary strength lies in her ninjutsu, Chiyome is also proficient in swordsmanship. In the manga, she is shown wielding a kodachi (short sword), and in the light novel, she is depicted carrying dual swords, indicating her ability to effectively fight in close quarters when needed.

Equipment

As a highly trained member of the Jinshin Clan, Chiyome is equipped with a variety of traditional ninja tools suited for stealth, infiltration, and combat. She carries kunai for close-range encounters and throwing, as well as a pair of kodachis, which she wields with notable proficiency when engaging in sword combat. In addition to her blades, she is armed with shurikens, useful for ranged attacks or distractions during infiltration missions. For evasion and ambush tactics, she makes use of ninja smoke bombs to obscure vision and ninja explosion bombs to create sudden bursts of force, ideal for disorienting opponents or clearing obstacles.

Relationships

Sasuke
Sasuke is Chiyome’s foster older brother and a central figure in her early life. He discovered her in a devastated village and brought her to the Jinshin Clan, recognizing her strong will and potential. Sasuke personally supervised her training, helping shape her into one of the clan’s elite fighters. His mysterious disappearance while investigating the Church deeply concerns Chiyome, prompting her to seek Arc’s assistance in locating him.

Arc
Arc becomes a trusted friend and ally to Chiyome over the course of the series. They first meet in Diento, where Arc and Ariane are searching for enslaved elves. Initially suspicious, Chiyome attempts to attack him with a kunai but is quickly impressed when she sees that he has tamed a spirit creature. After confirming his good intentions, she assists him by handing over a contract she discovers. Their bond grows stronger during their second meeting, where Chiyome enlists Arc’s help in rescuing enslaved Beastmen. She is prepared to accept collateral losses, but Arc’s teleportation magic offers a safer alternative. Over time, they form a reliable team, traveling together to the sacred land and meeting the Dragon Lord Wislhem. While Chiyome greatly respects Arc’s overwhelming power and magical abilities, she like Ariane often expresses frustration at his tendency to act recklessly without considering the consequences. Nonetheless, she remains continually amazed by his strength and enchanted equipment. She also develops a fondness for his cooking, eventually asking him to share his culinary knowledge with her people.

Ponta
Chiyome shows a clear affection for small animals, and this extends to Ponta, Arc’s spirit creature. She appears to be quite fond of Ponta’s presence.

Ariane
Chiyome and Ariane share a warm friendship and mutual respect. Ariane finds Chiyome adorable, especially due to her animal-like ears and tail, while Chiyome sees Ariane as a strong and dependable ally. The two often find themselves united in exasperation when reacting to Arc’s unpredictable behavior, further strengthening their bond.

Trivia

    • Chiyome is one of the main supporting characters who frequently travels alongside Arc and Ariane, though she often operates with her own goals in mind. Her birthday is noted to be on January 7. As a Beastman, Chiyome is one of the six elite members of the Sword and Spirit Jinshin Clan, and she takes the form of a cat type Beastman, distinguished by her triangular ears and expressive tail which often reveals her emotions more than her face does.
      • She is a skilled ninja who follows the teachings passed down from Hanzo, the Wanderer, and currently serves under the 25th Hanzo, the present leader in a long line of successors. Her ongoing mission involves freeing Beastman slaves across the kingdom of Rhoden, a task she carries out with unwavering dedication. The name Chiyome was adopted upon joining the Jinshin Clan, signifying her status as one of its elite members.
      • Arc speculates that the original Hanzo may have named the first Chiyome after Mochizuki Chiyome, a legendary female ninja from Japanese history.
