Chiho Sasaki

Chiho Sasaki (佐々木 千穂, Sasaki Chiho), is a supporting character in Hataraku Maou-sama! (The Devil is a Part-Timer!). She is a high school student and a part-time employee at MgRonald’s, where she works alongside Sadao Maou. Unlike most of the characters from Ente Isla, Chiho is a normal human but gains the ability to understand the Ente Isla language due to a hypnosis spell’s residual effects cast by Maou on her father, Inspector Sasaki.

Chiho is known for her cheerful and kind personality, as well as her obvious crush on Maou, which she expresses openly despite his obliviousness. Despite not being a warrior like Emilia Justina or a former demon general like Ashiya, she plays an important role in the series, offering moral support to Maou and the others as they navigate their lives in Japan.

Appearance in anime

Chiho Sasaki is a Japanese high school student living in modern Tokyo. She comes from an ordinary family, with her father, Inspector Sasaki, working as a police officer. Chiho is introduced as a bright and energetic girl who works at MgRonald’s, where she meets Sadao Maou and quickly develops a crush on him due to his strong work ethic and kind nature.

Her involvement in the supernatural conflicts of Ente Isla begins accidentally, after being exposed to the hypnosis spell Maou cast on her father. This causes her to develop the unusual ability to hear and understand the language of Ente Isla, inadvertently drawing her into the battles and conflicts between Maou, Emi, and other otherworldly forces.

Though initially unaware of the true nature of Maou and his past, she becomes an unwavering ally, choosing to support him despite learning that he was once the feared Demon King Satan.

Appearance

Chiho is a petite and youthful high school girl with a slim yet curvy figure, often drawing attention due to her large bust, which becomes a source of comedic moments throughout the series. She has short brown hair styled in a cute ponytail, and her eyes are a warm amber color.

At work, she wears her MgRonald’s uniform, which consists of a red-and-yellow short-sleeved shirt, a black skirt, and a red cap. Outside of work, she dresses in typical casual clothes, often wearing school uniforms or comfortable outfits.

Personality

Chiho is known for her friendly, cheerful, and optimistic nature. She is kind-hearted, hardworking, and loyal, always going out of her way to support her friends, even when they come from a completely different world.

She has a crush on Maou, which she expresses openly, though he remains oblivious to her feelings for most of the series. Unlike Emi, who maintains a tsundere dynamic with Maou, Chiho is openly affectionate and often tries to cheer him up when he struggles with his problems.

Despite her cheerful and somewhat naïve demeanor, Chiho isn’t afraid to stand up for herself and has moments of surprising maturity and emotional strength. She does not let her lack of supernatural abilities stop her from supporting Maou and his friends, even when faced with dangers from Ente Isla. She occasionally feels insecure about her lack of power compared to Emi and the others but continues to prove her worth through her unwavering trust and emotional intelligence.

Role in the Story

  • Part-Time Worker at MgRonald’s
Chiho works at MgRonald’s, where she meets Sadao Maou, unaware at first of his true identity as the Demon King. She admires his strong work ethic and caring personality, which leads her to develop romantic feelings for him.

  • Involvement in the Supernatural
Chiho becomes involved in the conflicts between Maou, Emi, and the forces of Ente Isla when she starts hearing strange voices due to her exposure to Ente Isla’s language through Maou’s hypnosis spell. This ability makes her a target for some of Maou’s enemies, leading to multiple moments where she is caught in the crossfire of supernatural battles. Despite being powerless in combat, Chiho plays a crucial role by acting as a bridge between the normal world and the supernatural one, helping Maou adjust to life in Japan while also providing moral support to him and his allies.

  • Feelings for Maou
Chiho’s romantic feelings for Maou are a central aspect of her character arc. Unlike Emi, who remains conflicted about her past with Maou, Chiho openly trusts and supports him, believing in his good nature. Although she confesses her love to Maou, he does not give her a clear response, leaving their relationship ambiguous. However, Chiho remains loyal to him, choosing to stay by his side regardless of his past.

Relationships

Sadao Maou / Demon King Satan
Chiho harbors a romantic crush on Maou and is one of the few characters who fully trusts him despite his past. She admires his hardworking nature and often worries about his well-being, supporting him both at work and during his supernatural struggles. Though Maou seems oblivious to her feelings, he deeply appreciates her kindness and values their friendship.

Emilia Justina / Emi Yusa
Chiho sees Emi as a rival in terms of her feelings for Maou, though their relationship evolves into a complicated friendship. While she initially feels jealous and intimidated by Emi’s strength, she eventually comes to respect her as an ally. Emi, despite teasing Chiho about her crush, also cares for her safety and looks out for her.

Shirō Ashiya
Ashiya treats Chiho as a valued friend, though he often worries that her involvement with Maou and their world could put her in danger. While he respects her loyalty, he remains cautious about allowing her to get too deeply involved in their affairs.

Suzuno Kamazuki
Suzuno initially sees Chiho as a normal human girl who should stay out of their conflicts. However, as the story progresses, Suzuno comes to admire Chiho’s determination, even offering to train her in self-defense at one point.

Trivia

    • Chiho’s large bust size is often a comedic topic in the series, especially when compared to Emi’s more modest figure.
      • Her ability to understand the Ente Isla language is a side effect of a hypnosis spell gone wrong, making her one of the few humans in Japan able to communicate with Maou and his allies in their native tongue.
      • She enjoys Japanese festivals, especially summer ones, and often invites Maou to attend them with her.
      • Chiho’s favorite food is yakitori (grilled chicken skewers).
      • She is one of the only purely human characters in the main cast, making her perspective unique compared to the supernatural beings around her.
      • She sometimes worries that Maou sees her as a child, which fuels her insecurities about her romantic feelings for him.

    Legacy

      • Chiho Sasaki is one of the most relatable and down-to-earth characters in Hataraku Maou-sama!, representing the human side of the story amidst a cast of supernatural warriors and former demon generals. Her kindness, optimism, and emotional resilience make her a valuable ally to Maou, even though she lacks any combat abilities.
        • Her unwavering faith in Maou, despite his dark past, highlights the series’ themes of redemption and second chances. Though she is often overshadowed by Emi in terms of plot significance, Chiho’s presence brings warmth and emotional balance to the story. Despite her romantic feelings for Maou, she ultimately chooses to support him as a friend first, showcasing her selfless and mature nature.
