Chihiro Furuya (降谷 千紘, Furuya Chihiro), is the main protagonist of the anime and manga series Sankarea: Undying Love. A high school student with an unusual and deep-rooted obsession with zombies, Chihiro is fascinated by the undead to the point of developing a romantic and emotional fixation on them. His morbid hobby takes a dramatic turn when he successfully uses a mysterious resurrection potion from an old manuscript in an attempt to revive his beloved deceased cat, Babu.
This experiment leads Chihiro to cross paths with Rea Sanka, a girl from a troubled and controlling household, who becomes entangled in his life and eventually transformed into a real zombie. As the story unfolds, Chihiro is thrust into a strange blend of romance, horror, and comedy, where his fantasy becomes a complicated and bittersweet reality.
Background

Appearance in anime
Chihiro is a student living in a temple household, raised in a family that includes his younger cousin Ranko, his younger sister Mero, and his eccentric grandfather. Unlike other teenagers, Chihiro spends most of his time immersed in zombie-themed media, collecting films, figures, and books about the undead. His fascination isn’t just surface-level he often dreams of falling in love with a zombie, believing it to be the ultimate romantic experience free of superficiality.
After the death of his pet cat Babu, Chihiro becomes emotionally distraught and turns to a handwritten resurrection manuscript in his family’s possession. He begins experimenting with the potion described within, performing nightly rituals in an abandoned building to bring Babu back. It is there he meets Rea Sanka, a girl who initially comes to the ruins to vent her frustrations, unaware of the events her presence will set into motion.
Appearance
Chihiro is a teenage boy with short, messy black hair and dark eyes. He typically wears his school uniform or casual attire, such as hoodies and T-shirts, and he carries a generally unkempt appearance that matches his withdrawn and eccentric nature.
His facial expressions often alternate between stoic and deadpan when discussing zombies, and emotionally expressive when dealing with people especially Rea. His fascination with the macabre gives him a slightly unusual aura, but he isn’t unkind or threatening in demeanor.
Personality
Chihiro is quirky, introverted, and intensely passionate about zombies. While many view him as a weirdo for his obsession, he isn’t ashamed of his interests and is deeply committed to the concept of undead love. He is creative, intelligent, and emotionally sensitive, especially when it comes to matters of life, death, and personal freedom.
Despite his dark interests, Chihiro is fundamentally kind-hearted and empathetic, as seen in his willingness to help Rea when she is suffering. He respects her agency and treats her like a person even after her transformation, valuing her for who she is rather than what she’s become. Chihiro’s loyalty and strong moral compass allow him to face bizarre and often dangerous circumstances with surprising courage.
Role in the Story
-
Revival of Babu and Meeting Rea
After the death of his cat Babu, Chihiro uses an ancient manuscript to create a resurrection potion, hoping to bring Babu back as a zombie. During his late-night rituals in an abandoned building, he encounters Rea Sanka, a seemingly perfect girl from a wealthy but deeply oppressive household. Unbeknownst to him, Rea has been suffering under her father’s control and finds comfort in confiding in Chihiro. -
Rea’s Death and Resurrection
Rea later consumes the resurrection potion initially out of despair and dies in a tragic accident shortly after. However, due to the potion’s effects, she returns to life as a zombie, fulfilling Chihiro’s long-held fantasy. With no one else to turn to, Rea begins living with Chihiro and his family, and he takes responsibility for protecting and caring for her while searching for a way to manage her condition. -
Growing Attachment and Conflict
Chihiro and Rea’s bond deepens as he helps her navigate her new undead existence. However, he soon realizes that loving a zombie is not as simple or romantic as he once imagined. Between Rea’s deteriorating body, her psychological struggles, and external threats from her family and others, Chihiro is forced to confront the darker reality of his obsession and decide whether he truly loves Rea or the idea of her.
Relationships
Rea Sanka
Rea becomes the focal point of Chihiro’s life after her transformation into a zombie. Though he initially treats her like a living embodiment of his fantasy, he quickly grows to care for her as a person. Their relationship evolves into something deeper and more sincere as Chihiro learns about her trauma and takes on the role of her protector and confidant.
Ranko Saouji
Chihiro’s cousin who harbors romantic feelings for him. Ranko is energetic and outspoken, often jealous of Rea’s presence in Chihiro’s life. Despite their frequent bickering, she cares for Chihiro deeply and often supports him in her own way.
Mero Furuya
Chihiro’s quiet and perceptive younger sister. While not directly involved in the supernatural events, she subtly observes her brother’s life and has a strong sense of emotional awareness.
Chihiro’s Grandfather
An eccentric man who frequently offers cryptic zombie-related advice. While he often appears senile, his ramblings occasionally hint at hidden knowledge about zombies.
