Personality

Chiaki Hanazono’s appearance wearing his Kuzuryū High basketball jersey
Chiaki Hanazono is characterized by a carefree and eccentric personality. He has a fondness for snacks, particularly curly cheese-flavored puffs and pudding, and is known to become temperamental if others touch his food without permission. His laid-back yet unpredictable nature occasionally causes trouble, as seen in the past when he injured his twin brother Momoharu in a fit of anger over pudding. His intimidating appearance has also led others to run errands for him, such as during junior high when he frequently ordered Konishi to buy his snacks.
Chiaki has a mischievous side, notably his habit of peeking at girls, which he often does with delinquent peers. Despite these antics, he is also portrayed as someone longing for companionship, frequently searching for his “soul mate.” Due to his afro hairstyle, however, he struggles to attract girls his age. He harbors feelings for Nao Nanao, the team’s manager, and has repeatedly attempted to confess to her, though without success. While Nao views him as a friend or older brother, Chiaki remains protective of her and becomes jealous when others express interest in her.
Academically, Chiaki is intelligent and performs well in his studies. His sharp intellect, combined with his adaptability on the court, makes him well-suited for the position of point guard, where his ability to read the game and organize plays complements his unconventional personality.
Appearance
Chiaki Hanazono stands at approximately 191 cm (6 ft 3 in), making him one of the tallest members of Kuzuryū High’s basketball team. He is distinguished by his large afro hairstyle, robust facial features, and athletic build, which together contribute to an intimidating presence. His appearance often causes others to perceive him as frightening, despite his generally carefree personality.
On the court, Chiaki wears the jersey number 7 and is typically seen in Nike Air Force 1 Mid sneakers.
Biography
Chiaki Hanazono was introduced to basketball through his younger twin brother, Momoharu, who began playing before him. The two often stayed late after school to practice and refine their skills together. Competitive by nature, Chiaki grew frustrated during junior high when his teammates were unable to keep up with his precise passing abilities. Their lack of cohesion led to the team’s elimination in the district tournament, causing him to lose motivation and step away from the sport.
Despite his dislike of “weaklings,” Chiaki made an exception for Sora Kurumatani, admiring his persistence and refusal to give up despite his height disadvantage. Inspired by Sora’s passion and determination, Chiaki rekindled his own love for basketball and rejoined the sport at Kuzuryū High.
Skills
Chiaki Hanazono is portrayed as an exceptional point guard, widely recognized for his playmaking ability. He possesses outstanding court vision, strong ball-handling skills, and physical strength, allowing him to orchestrate plays and create scoring opportunities for his teammates. His versatility enables him to adapt to other positions, including center or power forward, when required.
Due to his tall physique, Chiaki is the slowest player on the court, but he compensates for this limitation by relying on sharp reflexes and instinctive decision-making. While not an effective outside shooter, he is capable of finishing near the basket with reliable layups. Nao Nanao, the team’s manager, has remarked that his skill set would be ideally suited for the role of small forward, where his playmaking could be maximized.
Offensively, Chiaki poses a consistent threat through his ability to control the ball and anticipate opponents’ actions, keeping defenders uncertain about whether he will pass or shoot. His decisiveness and tactical intelligence make him an invaluable asset to Kuzuryū High’s offense.
Defensively, Chiaki is less effective. He rarely contributes to blocking or rebounding and is not a natural defensive presence. However, he compensates somewhat through his strong hand-eye coordination, which enables him to intercept passes and make steals against opposing players.
Etymology
The given name Chiaki (千秋) combines chi (千), meaning “thousand,” and aki (秋), meaning “autumn.” His surname, Hanazono (花園), is formed from hana (花), meaning “flower” or “blossom,” and zono/sono (園), meaning “garden,” “park,” or “plantation.” Together, his full name can be interpreted as “flower garden of a thousand autumns.”
