Chakuro

Chakuro is the main protagonist of the anime and manga series Children of the Whales. He serves as the archivist of the Mud Whale, a drifting island-like vessel on a sea of sand. Chakuro suffers from hypergraphia, a compulsion to write which drives his role as a recorder of the Mud Whale’s history. Despite his gentle nature, he is nicknamed the “Destroyer” due to the instability of his thymia powers, which he struggles to control.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Chakuro is an inquisitive and introspective individual, driven by a deep curiosity about the world around him. He often ponders existential and philosophical questions such as “How do Mud Whales float?” and “Why are feelings important?” This reflective nature is closely tied to his compulsion to write, a condition he and his grandfather view as a kind of illness. Despite this, his writing serves a crucial role within the Mud Whale, as he documents events objectively in his role as an archivist. His records are respected and regularly referenced by the council members.

Emotionally, Chakuro is highly expressive and sensitive. He frequently displays his emotions openly, often crying at funerals even in situations where it is traditionally discouraged. His emotional openness contrasts with the neutrality of his written records, highlighting the duality between his duties as a recorder and his deeply empathetic personality.

Appearance

Chakuro is a young boy with short, messy brown hair and bright green eyes. He is often seen wearing a pair of goggles resting on his head. His initial outfit consists of a simple white shirt layered under a green overshirt, secured with a green-blue sash tied around his waist. He also wears tan shorts and sandals, reflecting the practical attire suited for life aboard the Mud Whale.

Younger Life

In his early years, Chakuro was taught to use his thymia powers by Benihi, one of the elders on the Mud Whale. This training laid the foundation for his later struggles with controlling his abilities. During this time, he also developed a close friendship with Sami, a fellow resident of the Mud Whale. Their bond deepened over the years, and Sami eventually grew to harbor romantic feelings for him.

Relationships

Sami
Sami and Chakuro were childhood friends who shared a deep emotional bond. Before her death, Sami expressed that she had hoped to become Chakuro’s wife someday. Chakuro gently responded that he would have liked that as well, showing that her feelings were mutual.

Lykos
Lykos is the first person Chakuro meets from outside the Mud Whale. Their relationship becomes close over time, marked by trust, mutual understanding, and emotional growth as they learn from each other’s vastly different worlds.

Suou
Chakuro and Suou appear to have known each other since childhood. Their connection is further linked through Sami, Suou’s sister, who was especially close to Chakuro.

Ro
Ro is one of Chakuro’s close childhood friends. He is often seen with Nezu, collaborating on small inventions and sharing in the group’s daily life on the Mud Whale.

Nezu
Another of Chakuro’s close friends since childhood, Nezu often partners with Ro to build small contraptions. The three share a tight-knit bond shaped by their shared experiences growing up on the Mud Whale.

Trivia

    • Chakuro’s name is derived from the Japanese words 茶黒 (cha kuro), which translate to “blackish brown,” a reference to his hair color.
