Buggy the Star Clown, is the captain of the Buggy Pirates and co-leader of the Buggy and Alvida Alliance. Formerly an apprentice on the Roger Pirates alongside Shanks, Buggy was one of the earliest adversaries of Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. Through a series of unintended circumstances, Buggy’s reputation grew significantly, leading to his rise as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and, later, the public leader of the Cross Guild. As a result, Buggy is now recognized as one of the Four Emperors ruling the New World.
Background
Appearance in Anime
Buggy began his pirate career as an apprentice aboard the Roger Pirates, gaining firsthand experience of the Grand Line alongside legendary figures like Gol D. Roger and Shanks. His ambition for wealth and disdain for the dangers of piracy set him apart from his crewmates. During this time, Buggy accidentally consumed the Bara Bara no Mi, a Devil Fruit that granted him the ability to separate his body into pieces, rendering him immune to slashing attacks.
After the disbandment of the Roger Pirates, Buggy formed his own crew and operated in the East Blue, becoming the self-proclaimed “Pirate Clown” of Orange Town. His encounters with Luffy and the Straw Hats marked the beginning of a long-running rivalry. Despite multiple defeats, Buggy’s knack for survival and opportunism led him to key events such as the Summit War of Marineford, where his accidental heroics skyrocketed his reputation. As a Warlord, Buggy established Buggy’s Delivery, a pirate mercenary group. After the abolition of the Warlord system, Buggy partnered with Crocodile and Dracule Mihawk to form the Cross Guild, solidifying his position as a major player in the New World.
Appearance
Buggy is a flamboyant character with bright red hair styled in twin pigtails and a painted clown face. His signature outfit includes a striped shirt, a large captain’s coat, and an exaggerated, comical hat with a skull and crossbones. Buggy’s colorful appearance reflects his eccentric personality, and his clown-like features make him one of the most distinctive characters in the series.
Personality
Buggy is a loud, boastful, and greedy individual with an exaggerated sense of self-importance. Despite his cowardice and tendency to avoid direct confrontations, Buggy is resourceful and opportunistic, often turning seemingly hopeless situations to his advantage. While his antics are often comical, Buggy has moments of surprising insight and charisma, which have allowed him to amass a loyal following. Despite his selfish nature, Buggy occasionally demonstrates loyalty to his crew and allies, albeit reluctantly.
Role in the Story
Early Adventures
Buggy debuted as the main antagonist of the Orange Town Arc, where he clashed with Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates over his quest for treasure. He later appeared as a secondary antagonist during the Loguetown Arc, pursuing Luffy before being thwarted again.
Summit War Saga
Buggy played a supporting role during the Summit War of Marineford. His accidental involvement and humorous antics during the war elevated his reputation, leading to his appointment as a Warlord of the Sea. This newfound status allowed him to establish Buggy’s Delivery, a pirate mercenary organization.
New World and the Cross Guild
After the Warlord system was abolished, Buggy inadvertently found himself leading the Cross Guild alongside Crocodile and Dracule Mihawk. Though publicly regarded as the leader, Buggy’s role is largely symbolic, with Crocodile and Mihawk wielding the true power. Nevertheless, the Guild’s influence elevated Buggy to the rank of one of the Four Emperors.
Other Appearances
Buggy has made recurring appearances throughout the series, including in the Jaya Arc, Zou Arc, Wano Country Arc, and Egghead Arc. He also serves as the central protagonist of the Buggy’s Crew Adventure Chronicles cover arc and plays significant roles in the 3D2Y special episode and One Piece: Stampede movie.
