Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker (ブラム・ストーカー, Buramu Sutōkā) was a prominent member of the terrorist organization Decay of the Angel. He possessed a unique ability known as Vampirism, which played a significant role in his actions and influence within the organization.

Personality

Bram Vampire Transformation

Bram Stoker was often perceived as an emotionless individual, showing little interest in the world around him and craving nothing more than to sleep in his coffin for extended periods. However, he did admit to occasional boredom and even expressed a desire for a radio to pass the time. Despite his aloof demeanor, Bram harbored a disdain for insolent individuals, frequently directing his ire toward Fukuchi, whom he considered arrogant and cursed. He once even told Fukuchi to obliterate the world as long as he was left out of it. While Bram clearly detested insolent behavior, he showed little enthusiasm for actively opposing Fukuchi’s plans, dismissively stating that his only plan was to continue sleeping for 200 years.

Bram’s past suggests he had a deep aversion to his own ability, Vampirism, and the consequences of its use. Having been dubbed a calamity eight years prior likely due to the destruction wrought by those he turned Bram vowed to never create more of his kind. However, under the coercion and threats of Fukuchi, he reluctantly broke this vow, demonstrating his inner conflict and resentment for being forced into actions that contradicted his personal principles.

Due to the era he originated from, Bram displayed limited understanding of the modern world. His prolonged isolation in his coffin left him unaware of contemporary advancements and culture. For example, he mistook a truck for a horse-drawn carriage and misunderstood modern uses for bathtubs, humorously believing they were used for worshiping kings. These moments highlighted his detachment from the present day and his occasionally humorous naivety.

Bram showed a different side of himself when interacting with Aya, with whom he was more conversational and open. He shared personal stories, including details about his past life with the Holy Sword, revealing a private and introspective side to his character. Despite his brooding and seemingly emotionless exterior, Bram had a soft and protective nature that he reserved for Aya. His concern for her safety surpassed any interest in the world at large, showcasing a rare glimpse of warmth and compassion.

Appearance

Bram Stoker was a tall and slender man with an appearance that seemed both youthful and ancient, reflecting his vampiric nature. His features included fangs and long, wavy hair that extended below his shoulders, adding to his ethereal presence. He also possessed distinctive, triangular shaped pointed ears resembling those of an elf, along with two visible scars one on each side of his face and unique markings beneath his eyes, further emphasizing his otherworldly appearance.

In terms of attire, Bram wore black pants paired with a black trench coat featuring tattered sides. The sleeves of his coat were adorned with dark gray fur wrist cuffs on both arms. He complemented this look with brown boots, which also had dark gray fur near the ankles, mirroring the cuffs on his coat. The overall ensemble enhanced his ominous and mysterious aesthetic.

For most of the Decay of the Angel incident, and following the events where Ōchi Fukuchi severed his head from his body, Bram lacked a lower body. Instead, the Holy Sword Soluz Levni was embedded into his lower body and stretched upward to connect with his brain, serving as both a weapon and a symbol of his captivity.

Background

Bram Stoker was originally an earl in Northern Europe. Although he was once human, his cells were mutated by an ability, transforming him into a vampire. Over time, Bram gathered others of his kind, forming a group of vampires. However, their existence came under threat when an army captured and executed them by beheading them on stakes, rejecting Bram’s desperate pleas to spare his subjects. During this event, Bram was struck for the first time by the Holy Sword Soluz Levni, a weapon that would later become a key factor in his fate.

Eight years before the incident aboard the Boswellian at Standard Island, Bram was recognized as one of the “Ten Calamities”, beings feared as destroyers of humanity due to their immense destructive potential. During this period, he encountered Ōchi Fukuchi, resulting in a fierce clash. Fukuchi ultimately severed Bram’s lower body and subdued him by embedding the Holy Sword Soluz Levni into him. This act allowed Fukuchi to gain control over Bram’s ability and use him as a tool for his own plans.

Ability

Bram’s ability, Vampirism, allows him to transform anyone he bites into a vampire. Once infected, victims become aggressors themselves, spreading the condition rapidly. The infection rate of Vampirism is extraordinarily fast, surpassing the speed of the infamous South American werewolf incident. Bram has complete control over those infected by his ability, as well as any subsequent victims they turn, enabling him to quickly amass an army of loyal subordinates.

Due to its devastating potential, Vampirism is classified by global governments as one of the “Top Ten Calamities to Destroy the World”. This designation underscores the sheer destructive power of Bram’s ability, as it is capable of causing mass death, widespread chaos, and catastrophic destruction on a global scale.

Additionally, as demonstrated with Akutagawa, it is suggested that Bram’s ability can also revive the dead by transforming them into his “kind,” further emphasizing the horrifying and supernatural nature of his power.

Role in Bungo Stray Dogs

As a member of the Decay of the Angel, Bram plays a pivotal role in the organization’s plans. His ability, Vampirism, allows him to amass an army of vampires, turning his enemies into allies and sowing chaos in their ranks.

Bram’s ability to control others through vampirism makes him a powerful weapon for the Decay of the Angel. His unique power is both a curse and a gift, symbolizing the duality of his role as both a manipulator and a victim of his own abilities.

Bram’s actions and abilities place him in conflict with groups such as the Armed Detective Agency and the Hunting Dogs. His involvement in the Decay of the Angel’s plans positions him as a significant threat, requiring the protagonists to counter his powers and schemes.

Legacy

Bram Stoker represents themes of gothic horror, immortality, and manipulation in Bungo Stray Dogs. His ability, Vampirism, and his role in the Decay of the Angel highlight the enduring influence of Bram Stoker’s Dracula on modern depictions of vampires. As both a powerful antagonist and a tragic figure, Bram’s character adds depth and complexity to the series’ exploration of power, morality, and control.

Trivia

The real-life Bram Stoker’s birth name is Abraham Stoker.

In the synopsis of Bungo Stray Dogs Volume 22, Bram is referred to as “Vlad”, a nod to the historical figure Vlad the Impaler, who inspired the creation of Count Dracula.

Bram shares his birthday, November 8, with Margaret Mitchell, the author of Gone with the Wind.
