Black☆Star is an assassin meister at the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA) and the last surviving member of the infamous Star Clan, a family of assassins that was annihilated for their ruthless pursuit of power. He is widely regarded as one of the three most powerful students in the academy, alongside Death the Kid and Maka Albarn. Black☆Star is the meister of the magic dark arm, Tsubaki Nakatsukasa, with whom he forms a powerful and synchronized partnership.
Appearance
Appearance in manga
Black☆Star is a short, muscular teenager with spiky light blue hair that reflects his bold and flamboyant personality. His most distinguishing feature is the five-pointed star tattoo on his right shoulder, symbolizing his connection to the Star Clan. Black☆Star’s default outfit consists of a sleeveless black shirt with a high collar, black pants, and white arm warmers. He also wears black boots and a distinctive white scarf, which he often uses to conceal his face during stealth missions.
As he grows stronger, Black☆Star’s physique becomes more defined, showcasing his dedication to intense physical training. His confident and expressive demeanor is matched by his flashy appearance, which often commands attention.
Personality
Black☆Star is loud, brash, and self-absorbed, often proclaiming himself to be the “Biggest Star” and striving to surpass even the gods in power and fame. His arrogance and constant need to prove himself can come off as immature, but his unshakable confidence and determination inspire those around him. While Black☆Star frequently steals the spotlight with his antics, he is deeply loyal to his friends and highly protective of Tsubaki, treating her with respect despite his otherwise egotistical behavior.
Although Black☆Star initially struggles with teamwork and discipline due to his headstrong nature, he gradually matures over the course of the series. He learns to balance his overwhelming desire for recognition with his responsibilities as a meister and assassin, becoming a more thoughtful and reliable ally.
Black☆Star also shows a softer side, particularly when dealing with Tsubaki’s personal struggles or reflecting on his Star Clan’s dark legacy. Despite the Clan’s reputation, Black☆Star chooses to forge his own path, vowing to use his strength to protect others rather than dominate them.
Role in the Story
Black☆Star’s journey in Soul Eater revolves around his growth as a meister and his reconciliation with the Star Clan’s violent history. Early in the series, he struggles to defeat powerful opponents due to his overconfidence and lack of focus. However, through his training and battles, including his confrontation with Mifune, the samurai bodyguard of Angela, Black☆Star learns the importance of humility and discipline.
His rivalry with Mifune becomes a significant turning point, as Black☆Star ultimately earns the samurai’s respect by demonstrating both strength and honor. This battle cements Black☆Star’s reputation as one of DWMA’s strongest students and a future hero in his own right.
