Berry Shirayuki

Berry Shirayuki (白雪 ベリー, Shirayuki Berī) is the protagonist of Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode, the sequel to the original Tokyo Mew Mew manga. Unlike the other Mew Mews, she is infused with the DNA of two endangered species, the Amami rabbit (Pentalagus furnessi) and the Andean mountain cat (Leopardus jacobita) making her the first hybrid Mew Mew.

Appearance

Berry has long, light blonde hair and dark brown eyes, though some characters, such as Royal Highness, remark that her eyes can appear reddish in certain lighting. Her appearance closely resembles her mother, who looks like an older version of Berry but with darker hair. As a student, she wears a traditional Japanese sailor-style school uniform. When working at Café Mew Mew, Berry’s uniform consists of a bright pink dress with a white, heart-shaped apron. Unlike the other waitresses, she does not wear a lace headband, instead adorning her hair with a pink ribbon.

As Mew Berry, her appearance combines traits from both her infused animals—the Amami rabbit and the Andean mountain cat. She gains cream-colored rabbit ears and a cat’s tail tied with a thin bow and a bell, similar to Ichigo Momomiya’s. Her outfit consists of a cream-colored dress with a poofy skirt, accented by bows at the waist. She wears ankle-length boots, cream-colored gloves, and a leg band with a red bow. Berry’s blonde hair remains unchanged, and her Mew Mark is never clearly shown; it is speculated she may not have one, as her transformation was triggered by direct exposure to the Mew Infuser Machine.

In Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode’s updated manga illustrations, Berry’s design receives several changes. Her outfit includes spiked trim resembling the upgraded costumes in the Tokyo Mew Mew PlayStation game, with each spike featuring a small hole. Her boots are the same as her original design but are now decorated with light bows, paired with spiked-trim socks. Her gloves are dark-colored with ribbon accents at the wrists.

Her choker design is altered, instead of her pendant, she wears an oversized red bow with a heart-shaped brooch, set in a gold frame with a red gem at the center. The choker itself is now cream-colored, trimmed only at the bottom. Her leg accessory is redesigned into a blue-and-red plaid ribbon with spiked trim on her left thigh. The outfit also features a zipper running down the torso.

Berry’s hair is updated with a two-tone style, retaining her blonde color while incorporating blue streaks underneath. In this form, she wears her hair down but styled with small pigtails at the top, the blue streaks extending down through each.

Personality

Berry is depicted as a cheerful, optimistic, and kind-hearted girl who approaches her responsibilities with dedication. She is hardworking and supportive, often prioritizing the well-being of others. A notable quirk is her tendency to exclaim “eek” when she becomes nervous or startled.

Upon first becoming a Mew Mew, Berry struggles with confusion and self-doubt, feeling uncertain about her ability to lead the team. Over time, however, she grows in confidence and learns to embrace her role in battle, demonstrating both resilience and determination.

Berry’s personal life is also explored through her relationship with her childhood friend, Tasuku Meguro. She initially becomes flustered and awkward around him as she begins to recognize her romantic feelings. By the conclusion of the story, Berry gains the courage to openly confess her love to him.

In Petite Mew Mew, Berry further displays her caring and compassionate nature, particularly when she expresses concern for Sleeping Beauty, reinforcing her role as the empathetic and nurturing member of the Mew Mews.

Abilities

As a Mew Mew
In Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode, Berry temporarily assumes leadership of the Mew Mews while Ichigo Momomiya is in England with Masaya Aoyama. She is unique among the team as the first Mew Mew infused with the DNA of two endangered species: the Amami rabbit (Pentalagus furnessi) and the Andean mountain cat (Leopardus jacobita).

Her hybrid DNA grants her enhanced agility and heightened senses, including the ability to leap great distances and hear across long ranges. Despite her DNA connection, her jumping ability is portrayed as far stronger than that of an actual Amami rabbit, which is not known for its leaping prowess. Her rabbit DNA also influences her dietary preferences, giving her an increased liking for vegetables, particularly carrots.

Unlike Ichigo, whose powers are often tied to her emotions, Berry’s abilities are presented as more stable and not triggered by emotional outbursts.

Weapons and Attacks
Berry’s primary weapon is the Loveberry Rod, formed when her companion Ucha transforms into a staff. The rod is designed with an upside-down strawberry motif at its head, surrounded by small bunny figures. While fans sometimes refer to it as the “Raspberry Scepter/Wand” or “Loveberry Staff,” Japanese sources officially identify it as the Loveberry Rod.

Etymology

Berry’s surname, Shirayuki (白雪), is written with the kanji 白 (shira, “white”) and 雪 (yuki, “snow”), which together mean “white snow.” Her given name, Berry (ベリー), is written in katakana and directly references the English word “berry.” This continues the food-related naming convention shared by the other Mew Mews, such as Ichigo (strawberry) and Minto (mint).

Trivia

    • Berry has an unusually large appetite and is noted to be able to eat ten cakes in one sitting.
      • She is the youngest of the Mew Mews, with her birthday placing her a few months younger than Bu-Ling Huang.
        • Berry does not appear in the original Tokyo Mew Mew anime adaptation, as she was created specifically for the manga sequel Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode.
          • Her grandfather taught her to speak French, adding to her unique background compared to the other Mew Mews.
            • She makes her first appearance as a minor character at the end of the original Tokyo Mew Mew manga, before becoming the protagonist in the sequel.
              • Berry is the only Mew Mew whose given name is written in katakana, whereas the others’ names are written in hiragana or kanji.
                • She enjoys collecting pretty objects and fashionable clothing.
                  • One half of her DNA is from the Amami rabbit (Pentalagus furnessi), a dark-furred rabbit endemic to Amami Ōshima and Toku-no-Shima. Often described as a “living fossil,” the species closely resembles prehistoric rabbits that once lived on the Asian mainland. It is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated population of about 5,000.
                    • The other half of her DNA comes from the Andean mountain cat (Leopardus jacobita), a small wild cat native to the high Andes. Traditionally considered a sacred animal by the Aymara and Quechua peoples, it is also listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated wild population of fewer than 2,500 individuals.
