Batou

Batou Buttetsu (バトー ブッテツ, Batō Buttetsu),is one of the primary characters in the Ghost in the Shell franchise and serves as the second-in-command of Public Security Section 9 under Major Motoko Kusanagi. He is a former military ranger, possessing extensive combat experience and tactical expertise.

Batou is considered the second-best melee fighter in Section 9, following only the Major herself. Despite his rugged and intimidating appearance, he is known for his loyalty, dry humor, and deep sense of camaraderie with his teammates. He is particularly close to Kusanagi, often acting as her trusted confidant and protector. Throughout the franchise, Batou is a major player in Section 9’s counter-cyberterrorism operations, often leading missions with his exceptional combat skills, firearms proficiency, and cybernetic enhancements. His relationship with Kusanagi is one of the series’ central dynamics, marked by a strong but unspoken bond.

Background

Appearance in anime

Batou has a military background, serving as a ranger in the military before joining Section 9. His combat experience and tactical expertise make him one of the most reliable operatives in the team. Though much of his past remains shrouded in mystery, it is suggested that he has been through numerous high-risk missions that have honed his skills as a lethal yet disciplined fighter.

His body is highly cyberized, with enhanced strength, durability, and reflexes, making him one of the physically strongest members of Section 9. However, unlike Kusanagi, who often grapples with existential questions about her humanity, Batou remains deeply human at heart, showing a strong moral compass and emotional depth.

Despite his stoic and battle-hardened nature, Batou has a soft side, particularly seen in his fondness for Tachikomas, the AI-driven robotic tanks used by Section 9. His affection for them often contrasts with his otherwise gruff personality.

Appearance

Batou is a large, muscular man with a rugged and imposing presence. His most notable physical feature is his pair of cybernetic eyes, which resemble oval-shaped, silver lenses embedded in his face. These artificial eyes enhance his visual perception and battlefield awareness, but also add to his intimidating, machine-like appearance.

Personality

Batou is rugged, blunt, and sarcastic, often using dry humor and wit in conversation. He is a battle-hardened warrior who maintains a strong moral compass and a deep sense of loyalty to his comrades, particularly Major Kusanagi.

While he may appear intimidating and cold, Batou has a soft side, showing compassion for his teammates and even artificial beings like the Tachikomas. His protective nature is most evident in his relationship with Kusanagi, as he often worries about her well-being and acts as her unofficial bodyguard.

Despite his deep loyalty, Batou is not afraid to challenge authority, particularly when he believes Section 9 is being manipulated by corrupt government forces. He is fiercely independent and values personal integrity, making him one of the most principled members of the team.

Role in the Story

  • Ghost in the Shell (1995 Film & Manga)
In the original Ghost in the Shell film, Batou serves as Major Kusanagi’s right-hand man in Public Security Section 9, assisting her in tracking down cyber-criminals and investigating cybernetic terrorism cases. As Kusanagi begins questioning her own humanity and identity, Batou remains her steadfast companion, though he struggles to fully understand her existential dilemmas. He plays a key role in protecting and supporting her, particularly in the climactic battle against the Puppet Master.

  • Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
In Stand Alone Complex, Batou takes on a more prominent leadership role, often leading field missions when Kusanagi is unavailable. The series explores his past, emotions, and interactions with other team members, particularly his protective relationship with Togusa and his attachment to the Tachikomas.

  • Ghost in the Shell: Arise
In Arise, Batou’s early years in Section 9 are explored, showing a more rebellious and impulsive version of him before he fully develops into Kusanagi’s second-in-command. His rough and unpolished personality contrasts with his later, more composed self.

  • Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045
In SAC_2045, Batou returns as one of the most experienced operatives in Section 9, continuing to work alongside Kusanagi in dealing with new cyber-threats and AI warfare. His loyalty and combat skills remain as sharp as ever, making him a vital part of the team.

Relationships

Motoko Kusanagi
Batou’s most significant relationship is with Major Motoko Kusanagi. While their relationship is mostly professional, there are clear hints of deeper affection and protectiveness from Batou’s side. He worries about Kusanagi’s well-being and often acts as her bodyguard, though she is more than capable of handling herself. While Kusanagi often keeps an emotional distance, Batou remains loyal to her no matter what, frequently questioning her risk-taking behavior but always backing her up when it counts.

Daisuke Aramaki
As Section 9’s director, Aramaki values Batou’s loyalty, discipline, and combat expertise. Though Batou is not afraid to question authority, he respects Aramaki as a leader who truly cares about his team.

Togusa
Batou often mentors Togusa, the least cyberized member of Section 9. While he teases Togusa about his humanity and inexperience, he respects his detective instincts and moral integrity. Their contrasting personalities lead to humorous banter but also mutual trust and camaraderie.

The Tachikomas
Batou is one of the few members of Section 9 who treats the Tachikomas as sentient beings rather than just machines. He forms a close bond with them, showing genuine sadness when they are decommissioned. His affection for the AI tanks highlights his hidden soft side, making him one of the most emotionally complex characters in the series.
