Banri Tada (多田 万里, Tada Banri) is the main protagonist of the Golden Time series. He is a freshman studying law at a private university in Tokyo. Following an accident on the night of his high school graduation, in which he falls off a bridge, Banri suffers from retrograde amnesia, leaving him unable to recall any memories from before the incident. Additionally, a supernatural manifestation of his past self, often referred to as his “Ghost”, continues to linger, symbolizing the life and identity he lost due to the accident.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Banri Tada is a kindhearted, bold, and compassionate individual with an optimistic and outgoing nature. He readily welcomes new friendships and is willing to go out of his way to help others, even at his own expense. Despite his easygoing and patient demeanor, he is highly perceptive, particularly when it comes to Kouko Kaga. While initially captivated by her beauty, he quickly recognizes her deep-seated loneliness and makes efforts to support her, even as she remains fixated on Mitsuo Yanagisawa.
Banri’s greatest internal struggle revolves around his lost past. Due to his retrograde amnesia, he perceives himself as a ghost, a person without a clear identity, inhabiting a body that once belonged to someone else. This sense of detachment makes him hesitant to reconnect with people from his past, fearing that they will expect him to revert to the person he once was someone he no longer remembers.
Additionally, Banri develops a deep-seated fear of regaining his memories, believing that if his past self resurfaces, his current identity will cease to exist, erasing the bonds he has formed since the accident. This conflict intensifies as the spirit of his past self begins to manifest, attempting to reclaim control over him. As a result, Banri is forced to confront his past while struggling to hold onto the life he has built in the present.
Appearance
Banri Tada has green eyes and medium-length brown hair, giving him a youthful appearance. In the first episode, he is seen wearing a formal suit for his freshman orientation, consisting of a black jacket, a blue tie, and a white shirt. Standing at 5’5″ (165 cm), Banri is often described as cute by those around him. Outside of formal occasions, he typically wears casual clothing suited to his laid-back personality.
History
Banri Tada suffered retrograde amnesia following an accident in which he fell off a bridge the day after his high school graduation party. As a result, he lost all memories of his life before the incident.
After the accident, Banri spent a year recovering in a hospital under medical observation. During this time, he largely avoided contact with his friends and family, feeling overwhelmed by their expectations and their hopes that he would regain his former self. Despite acknowledging that he is now a different person, distinct from who he was before the accident, a part of him longs for his past life, particularly the relationship he once shared with Linda.
Relationships
Kouko Kaga
Banri’s girlfriend and later fiancée. Their relationship begins as an awkward friendship but grows into a deep, supportive romance as they both help each other overcome their personal struggles.
Linda (Rinda Hayashida)
A childhood friend and former crush, Linda deeply cares for Banri and carries guilt over his accident. She struggles with her lingering feelings for his past self and her friendship with his current self.
Mitsuo Yanagisawa
Initially a distant acquaintance, Mitsuo becomes one of Banri’s closest friends, forming a strong bond through their shared college experiences.
Nana
A mysterious and eccentric friend, who, despite her aloof nature, provides Banri with unexpected support and advice.
The Ghost of Banri’s Past Self
The manifestation of Banri’s lost identity, which struggles to reclaim its existence, causing conflict and instability in Banri’s current life.
Legacy
Banri Tada’s story is one of self-discovery, love, and the struggle between past and present identity. His journey through amnesia, romance, and emotional growth makes him one of the most compelling protagonists in romance anime.
His relationship with Kouko, his friendships, and his struggle to accept himself resonate deeply with viewers, making Golden Time a memorable and emotionally rich series. Whether as a law student, a friend, a lover, or a lost soul seeking meaning, Banri’s story reminds us that we are more than just our past, we are the sum of the experiences and choices we make moving forward.
