Personality

Ayumu is good-natured, easygoing, and somewhat carefree, rarely letting stress or conflict affect his demeanor. Unlike his mother, he is open-minded toward espers, believing that not all power is inherently evil. While he tries to avoid unnecessary conflict, he also won’t stand by and allow injustice to occur, making him a reluctant yet capable fighter when necessary.

Though he has a sharp wit and strong instincts, Ayumu can sometimes come across as lazy or unmotivated, preferring to go with the flow rather than actively seek out conflict. However, when his friends or beliefs are challenged, he shows surprising determination and skill, proving himself as a worthy disciple of Roshi Yodani.

Background

Ayumu was born into a highly political household, raised by his mother, Reia Ozora, one of the most outspoken critics of espers. Growing up, he was constantly exposed to her anti-esper rhetoric, but as he grew older, he began questioning her views, especially after encountering espers who used their abilities for good.

At some point, he crossed paths with Roshi Yodani, a skilled and wise mentor who saw potential in him. Under Roshi’s guidance, Ayumu began training in martial arts, developing his own abilities and philosophy, which diverged from his mother’s strict anti-esper stance. Despite his natural disinterest in politics, he struggles with his family’s reputation, often forced to navigate the expectations placed upon him due to his mother’s influence.

Abilities

Ayumu Ozora possesses the ability of Flash Precognition, which allows him to see a few seconds into the future. However, his visions are fragmented, with scenes from the present and future overlapping, making it difficult for him to interpret them accurately. As a result, Ayumu occasionally experiences confusion when attempting to distinguish between reality and his precognitive glimpses.

Role in the Story

Ayumu serves as a neutral but significant character, often caught between two worlds, his mother’s political opposition to espers and his own personal experiences that contradict her beliefs. While he does not actively seek to become a hero or a revolutionary, his training under Roshi Yodani places him at the center of key conflicts, forcing him to make choices that shape his destiny.

Depending on the story’s progression, Ayumu may act as:

  • A mediator, attempting to bridge the gap between espers and non-espers.
  • A combatant, using his martial arts training to defend those who cannot protect themselves.
  • A reluctant hero, drawn into battles he originally wanted no part of but ultimately finding his own sense of purpose.
  • Trivia

      • Ayumu’s nickname “Afro” (アフロ, Afuro) is based on his distinctive hairstyle, which often becomes a subject of jokes and teasing from his peers.
      • Unlike many characters in the esper world, Ayumu does not rely on supernatural abilities, instead using pure martial arts skill to fight espers on equal ground.
      • He has a habit of falling asleep in unusual places, sometimes even during important conversations.
      • Despite his mother’s expectations, he has no interest in politics, often dodging public appearances or debates whenever possible.
      • His favorite food is ramen, and he can often be found hanging out at local food stalls instead of training seriously.
