Ayano Sugiura (杉浦 綾乃, Sugiura Ayano), is a supporting character in the YuruYuri series, including YuruYuri, MiniYuri, and Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken. She also makes a cameo appearance in the crossover work Reset!. A diligent and proud student, Ayano serves as the vice-president of the Student Council at Nanamori Middle School, where much of the series takes place.
While she often tries to uphold the rules and maintain decorum, her tsundere tendencies especially toward fellow student Kyoko Toshino—make her a lovable and frequently comedic character. Despite her serious image, Ayano is prone to emotional outbursts, wordplay, and internal conflicts, particularly when it comes to her unspoken affections.
Background

Appearance in anime
Ayano is a third-year student at Nanamori Middle School, and as the vice-president of the Student Council, she works alongside members like Iroha, Chitose, and Rise Matsumoto. She is academically gifted, responsible, and dedicated to her duties, often clashing with Kyoko due to the latter’s laziness and rule-breaking antics.
Despite her strict personality, Ayano harbors a long-standing crush on Kyoko Toshino, which she adamantly denies to others and even to herself. Her tsundere nature leads to a recurring pattern of blushing, denial, and overcompensating behavior whenever Kyoko is around.
Appearance
Ayano has long magenta hair usually tied in twin braids, with a matching pair of red hair ribbons, and her eyes are a vibrant amber. She wears the standard Nanamori Middle School uniform, which includes a white blouse, dark skirt, and the maroon sailor collar typical to the series. Her appearance is neat and orderly, reflecting her personality.
Personality
Ayano is a classic tsundere a person who is initially cold and stern but has a hidden soft side, especially around someone she cares about. She often overreacts when Kyoko teases her or says something unexpectedly sweet, though these moments secretly thrill her. Ayano is hardworking, earnest, and highly competitive, particularly with Kyoko, though her rivalry is often just a cover for deeper feelings.
She is also known for her love of puns, which she tries to deliver seriously but often ends up flustered or embarrassed by them. Ayano is endearing because of how genuinely she tries to be composed, even when overwhelmed by emotion or awkward social interactions.
Role in the Story
-
Student Council Duties
Ayano’s primary role is that of the straight-laced foil to Kyoko and the Amusement Club. She often checks in on their behavior, attempts to enforce school rules, and argues with Kyoko over the proper use of school facilities. These encounters often devolve into humorous exchanges or subtle romantic tension. -
Emotional Development
Throughout the series, Ayano gradually becomes more comfortable around Kyoko and the rest of the cast, though she rarely confronts her feelings head-on. Her internal monologues and accidental slips reveal a rich emotional world that contrasts her stoic exterior. -
Appearances in Other Media
In MiniYuri and spin-off specials like Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken, Ayano continues her tsundere role in comedic or chibi-style interactions. Her cameo in Reset! is brief but serves as a nod to fans of the original series.
Relationships
Kyoko Toshino
Her primary love interest and biggest source of flustered chaos. Ayano competes with Kyoko academically and behaviorally, but her antagonism is rooted in deep admiration and affection. Kyoko, for her part, often teases Ayano but seems to enjoy their back-and-forth.
Chitose Ikeda
Chitose is Ayano’s close friend and confidante in the Student Council. She supports Ayano’s feelings for Kyoko and often pushes her toward romantic situations (sometimes while indulging in wild yuri fantasies of her own).
Rise Matsumoto & Iroha
Her fellow Student Council members, both of whom support Ayano in more practical or comedic ways. Rise rarely speaks but serves as a quiet observer, while Iroha tends to be cheerful and direct.
