Aura

Aura (アウラ, Aura), also known asAura the Guillotine(断頭台のアウラ, Dantōdai no Aura), is one of the Seven Sages of Destruction, serving directly under the Demon King. Aura is known for her unique and powerful magic, Auserlese, which allows her to weigh the mana of her opponent’s soul against her own using the Scales of Obedience. The result of this calculation determines the control over the other’s body, granting dominance to the soul with the greater amount of mana.

Aura is depicted as a petite, yet strikingly elegant demon with distinct features that make her stand out. She has long pink hair tied into two large pigtails, which are further divided into three smaller braids near her shoulders. Her dark blue irises complement her delicate features, giving her an intense and somewhat ethereal look.

Her attire consists of a revealing, dark blue outfit that enhances her demonically regal appearance. She wears two golden necklaces around her neck, adding an ornate touch to her look. The outfit itself is quite striking, with her cleavage and abdomen exposed, showing off a hint of her midriff. A large, pink frilly cape drapes around her waist, further accentuating her silhouette. Her legs are adorned in white-striped, dark blue leggings that lead down to her shoes, completing her eye-catching ensemble. She also wears dark blue opera gloves on her arms, adding a sophisticated flair to her appearance.

Overall, Aura’s design reflects her high-ranking status among demons and her role as a formidable adversary, combining beauty with strength.

Personality

Aura, as a demon, is an articulate and individualistic creature with no sense of empathy. Despite having executioners as subordinates, she was unfazed upon learning of their demise. True to her nature, she holds a strong belief in the superiority of her magic and enjoys battles where she perceives herself to have the upper hand.

However, Aura also exhibits a cautious side. When faced with formidable enemies, such as the Hero Party, she opts to retreat rather than engage directly, a strategy that helped her survive the defeat of the Demon King. She is also meticulous in assessing her opponents, carefully checking for signs of mana instability and being aware of the history of renowned mages she faces, such as Frieren.

Background

Aura became one of the Sages of Destruction over five hundred years ago, amassing an army from those she subjugated with her magic. Her reputation grew due to her gruesome practice of decapitating anyone she successfully controlled, discovering that individuals with strong willpower could partially resist her magic. This earned her the title “Aura the Guillotine.”

At one point, Aura and the other Sages of Destruction were called to assist in a battle against the Hero of the South, under the command of Schlacht. She survived the conflict, but at the cost of three fellow Sages and Schlacht himself. Later, when she faced the Hero Party, she lost a significant portion of her undead army, was injured by Himmel, and was forced to retreat. Despite these setbacks, the Hero Party ultimately defeated the Demon King. Aura then retreated into hiding until Himmel’s death.

After Himmel’s passing, Aura resurfaced and began waging war in an attempt to take over Graf Granat’s Domain in the Northern Lands. Her conquest resulted in a bitter conflict with the humans of the region, culminating in the death of Graf Granat’s son, who was enlisted to fight in the war.

Aura the Guillotine Arc
Twenty-eight years after Himmel’s death, Aura, seemingly weary of war, sent three of her executioners—Lügner, Linie, and Draht—to negotiate peace with Graf Granat. However, her true intention was to deceive him by lowering his guard and persuading him to disable the powerful barrier protecting his domain, allowing her army free access.

When Frieren’s Party arrived, Draht was killed, and a confrontation with Aura ensued outside the town. After a brief battle with her undead forces, Aura decided to use her Scales of Obedience, weighing both her own soul and Frieren’s to determine who possessed more mana. Initially, the scale seemed to favor Aura’s mana, but it soon shifted toward Frieren’s.

Aura was unable to comprehend that a mage would intentionally conceal their mana throughout their life just to deceive demons. She boasted of her five hundred years of life, only for Frieren to reveal that she had lived for over a thousand years and revealed her true mana output. With superior mana, Frieren defeated Aura using Aura’s own submission magic, gaining full control over her body. In the end, Frieren ordered Aura to kill herself, forcing her to comply by decapitating herself.

Abilities

Spell of Obedience: Auserlese
Auserlese is Aura’s signature magic and one of the most potent and dangerous spells in her arsenal. This spell manifests in the form of a pair of mystical scales, known as the Scales of Obedience, that measure the mana of both Aura and her target. When Aura uses this magic, she compares her own mana to that of the opponent’s, and the soul with more mana gains control over the body of the weaker one.

If Aura possesses more mana than her opponent, she can dominate their body permanently, using the scales to enforce her will. However, there is a significant flaw in the spell: the subjugation can be temporarily broken by individuals with a strong will, who can resist the control. In such cases, Aura has devised a brutal method to ensure the continued subjugation of those she controls—by decapitating the person she’s dominated, effectively sealing their fate.

While Auserlese is a highly effective spell, it carries immense risk for Aura herself. As the mana of the more powerful soul takes control of the weaker soul’s body, Aura stakes her own life whenever she uses the Scales of Obedience. If she fails, she risks losing control over herself as well. Despite this, Aura’s unyielding confidence and belief in her own superiority make her willing to take the risk, especially when the scales tip in her favor.

In battle, Aura’s use of Auserlese proves her strategic thinking, but also her ruthless nature, as she will not hesitate to take extreme measures to ensure her control and victory.
