Asbel

Asbel (アスベル, Asuberu), is one of the primary protagonists in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. He is a skilled pilot and the prince of Pejite, a city ravaged by war and the encroaching Toxic Jungle. Asbel is the twin brother of Lastelle, whose tragic fate fuels his determination to seek revenge against Torumekia and protect what remains of his homeland. Though initially driven by vengeance, his encounters with Nausicaä help him gain a new perspective on war, destruction, and the possibility of peace.

Background

Appearance in anime

Asbel hails from Pejite, a once-thriving kingdom that falls victim to both Torumekian aggression and the unpredictable nature of the Ohmu, the giant insect species that inhabit the Toxic Jungle. He is the son of Pejite’s unnamed king and queen, though little is known about his upbringing. What is clear, however, is that Asbel and his twin sister, Lastelle, shared a strong bond.

When Torumekia invades Pejite to seize control of an ancient and devastating biological weapon, Asbel’s family and people are slaughtered. Lastelle, in a desperate attempt to prevent further destruction, tries to escape with the weapon but is fatally wounded in the process. Witnessing his sister’s tragic demise fuels Asbel’s initial thirst for revenge, driving him to take reckless actions against Torumekian forces. However, his eventual encounter with Nausicaä forces him to reevaluate his perspective on violence, ultimately leading him toward a path of redemption.

Appearance

Asbel is a young man with short, reddish-brown hair and brown eyes. He wears practical Pejitean pilot gear, including a jumpsuit and gloves, which emphasize his role as an aviator. His appearance is rugged yet youthful, reflecting his impulsive and determined nature.

Personality

At the beginning of the story, Asbel is consumed by grief and anger, making him reckless and impulsive. His desire for vengeance against the Torumekians clouds his judgment, leading him to act without thinking of the consequences. However, beneath his vengeful exterior lies a kind-hearted and courageous individual who genuinely wishes to protect others.

Asbel’s defining trait is his capacity for growth. His interactions with Nausicaä serve as a turning point in his character development, helping him see beyond revenge and realize the cycle of violence is only perpetuating destruction. Though he remains passionate and headstrong, he learns to temper his emotions with wisdom, becoming a valuable ally in Nausicaä’s quest to restore balance to the world.

Role in the Story

  • Attack on Torumekian Forces
Asbel is first introduced as an enraged pilot seeking revenge against the Torumekians for the destruction of Pejite and the death of his sister. He launches an assault on a Torumekian airship, but his reckless attack ultimately leads to his own crash in the Sea of Decay.

  • Encounter with Nausicaä
After crash-landing in the Toxic Jungle, Asbel is saved by Nausicaä. Initially distrusting of her due to her association with the Torumekians, he soon realizes she is different from the warmongering factions he despises. Witnessing her ability to communicate with the Ohmu and her deep respect for nature challenges his worldview.

  • Escape from the Toxic Jungle
Asbel and Nausicaä work together to escape the Toxic Jungle, encountering the ancient ruins buried beneath it. Here, Asbel begins to understand that the Toxic Jungle is not just a plague upon humanity but a natural phenomenon cleansing the world of past sins. This revelation further shifts his perspective, making him more open to Nausicaä’s ideals.

  • Return to Pejite and Internal Conflict
Upon returning to Pejite, Asbel is horrified to learn that the surviving members of his people plan to manipulate the Ohmu into destroying the Torumekians, regardless of the collateral damage it may cause. He is torn between loyalty to his homeland and his newfound belief in peace. Unable to condone such mass destruction, he chooses to side with Nausicaä, actively working to prevent further bloodshed.

  • Joining Nausicaä’s Cause
Asbel ultimately becomes one of Nausicaä’s most loyal allies. He fights alongside her in the battle to prevent the artificially provoked Ohmu stampede, helping her bring peace between the warring factions. His growth is evident as he prioritizes saving lives over seeking vengeance, proving himself to be a capable and compassionate leader in his own right.

Relationships

Nausicaä
Asbel initially views Nausicaä with suspicion but quickly comes to admire her wisdom, courage, and compassion. She plays a crucial role in helping him overcome his desire for revenge, and he, in turn, becomes one of her strongest allies. Their bond is built on mutual respect, and though there are hints of romantic tension, their relationship remains primarily one of deep friendship.

Lastelle
Asbel’s twin sister, whose death serves as his primary motivation early in the story. He deeply mourns her loss and initially allows his grief to fuel his desire for revenge. However, he later honors her memory by choosing to fight for peace rather than vengeance.

Pejite Resistance
Asbel is initially aligned with the surviving citizens of Pejite but ultimately rejects their violent methods. Though he understands their pain, he cannot support their willingness to sacrifice innocent lives.

Torumekians
Asbel harbors deep hatred toward the Torumekians for their invasion of Pejite. However, he later realizes that not all Torumekians are responsible for the atrocities committed, allowing him to move past his blind hatred.

Trivia

    • In the 1985 English dub by New World Pictures, Asbel was renamed “Milo.” However, subsequent versions restored his original name.
      • Asbel’s transformation from a vengeful warrior to a peace-seeking ally mirrors Nausicaä’s ability to change those around her through compassion and understanding.
      • His name, “Asbel,” might have been inspired by biblical or historical references, though its exact origin is unclear.

    Legacy

      • Asbel’s journey is one of redemption and self-discovery. His transformation from a grief-stricken avenger to a protector of peace highlights one of the central themes of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind the idea that true strength lies not in destruction, but in the courage to break the cycle of violence. Through his character arc, Asbel reinforces the importance of empathy, wisdom, and hope for a better future.
