Asbel hails from Pejite, a once-thriving kingdom that falls victim to both Torumekian aggression and the unpredictable nature of the Ohmu, the giant insect species that inhabit the Toxic Jungle. He is the son of Pejite’s unnamed king and queen, though little is known about his upbringing. What is clear, however, is that Asbel and his twin sister, Lastelle, shared a strong bond.

When Torumekia invades Pejite to seize control of an ancient and devastating biological weapon, Asbel’s family and people are slaughtered. Lastelle, in a desperate attempt to prevent further destruction, tries to escape with the weapon but is fatally wounded in the process. Witnessing his sister’s tragic demise fuels Asbel’s initial thirst for revenge, driving him to take reckless actions against Torumekian forces. However, his eventual encounter with Nausicaä forces him to reevaluate his perspective on violence, ultimately leading him toward a path of redemption.

  Upon returning to Pejite, Asbel is horrified to learn that the surviving members of his people plan to manipulate the Ohmu into destroying the Torumekians, regardless of the collateral damage it may cause. He is torn between loyalty to his homeland and his newfound belief in peace. Unable to condone such mass destruction, he chooses to side with Nausicaä, actively working to prevent further bloodshed.
