Asako Kusakabe (日下部 麻子, Kusakabe Asako) was the former mentor and legal guardian of Yuuji Kazami, the protagonist of the Grisaia series. Following the death of Yuuji’s parents, Asako took him in and was primarily responsible for raising and training him. She passed away one year before Yuuji enrolled at Mihama Academy.
After her death, her close friend and colleague JB (Julia Bardera) assumed the role of Yuuji’s guardian. Yuuji has described Asako as having a “rough personality,” though her influence on his life was profound and deeply personal. Asako was cremated after her passing, and her gravestone is located in the mountains of Yamanashi Prefecture, near the place where she and Yuuji once lived together with her dog, John.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Asako Kusakabe was a complex individual, embodying both harshness and kindness. She was highly capable and competent in her role as Yuuji Kazami’s guardian and mentor, instilling many of her values and disciplines into him. Her strict yet protective upbringing allowed Yuuji to function in society despite his traumatic past, although it also left him with lingering quirks such as a comical fear of large women.
Despite her strength and professionalism, Asako had her flaws. She was notoriously inept in the kitchen, unable to cook even basic meals like fried rice. Outside of work, she shared similarities with Yuuji, particularly in her love for reading. On quiet, rainy days, she found comfort in a book, a pot of coffee, and a pack of cigarettes.
As a child, Asako was rebellious, often ignoring the rules of others while stubbornly upholding her own sense of morality. Her defiance and strong-willed nature made her a difficult child, but those same qualities shaped her into the resilient woman who would later guide Yuuji’s development.
Appearance
Asako Kusakabe was a tall and attractive woman with dark blue hair, typically tied in a ponytail, and matching dark blue eyes. Her appearance conveyed both strength and confidence, befitting her role as a seasoned operative.
Her usual attire consisted of a white A-shirt, with a section extending from the back of her neck to the top of her bust, paired with black pants and black boots. On occasion, she was seen wearing a blue jacket draped over her shoulders, further emphasizing her composed and authoritative presence.
Background
Asako Kusakabe was a highly skilled field operative working for the Japanese government under the covert organization CIRS (Central Intelligence and Research Services). While much of her early life remains undisclosed, it is known that she was a strong-willed and fiercely independent individual from a young age, often defying authority but adhering strictly to her own moral code.
Her life took a pivotal turn when she was assigned to a mission involving a young boy Yuuji Kazami who had been left orphaned and emotionally broken following the traumatic loss of his family. Rather than simply oversee his rehabilitation, Asako chose to adopt full responsibility for raising and training him, becoming both a maternal figure and mentor. She provided Yuuji with structure, discipline, and emotional guidance, all while molding him into a capable individual capable of handling covert operations himself.
Asako’s upbringing shaped Yuuji’s personality, habits, and sense of duty. Although she maintained a gruff and sometimes abrasive exterior, her actions revealed a deep well of care and protection toward Yuuji. Their relationship was one of profound mutual respect, though Asako rarely showed vulnerability outright.
After suffering from a long-term illness, Asako passed away roughly one year before Yuuji’s enrollment at Mihama Academy. Her death deeply affected Yuuji and left a lasting void in his life. Following her passing, her longtime colleague and friend Julia Bardera (JB) became Yuuji’s legal guardian. Asako was cremated, and her ashes were laid to rest alongside her dog, John, in the mountains of Yamanashi Prefecture, near the home they once shared.
Relationships
Yuuji Kazami
Asako first encountered Yuuji Kazami during a raid on Heath Oslo’s facility, which was known for training children as operatives for terrorist activities. Although Oslo escaped, Asako found Yuuji in a severely traumatized state and chose to rescue him. With assistance from Julia Bardera (JB), she gained legal guardianship over Yuuji and entered semi-retirement from her work with Ichigaya to raise him. The two lived together in a secluded cabin in the Yamanashi mountains, where Asako took on the dual roles of caregiver and mentor.
Under her guidance, Yuuji was trained in survival, combat, and marksmanship particularly as a sniper. Asako helped him process his trauma and grow into a capable individual. Over time, their relationship grew increasingly complex. Yuuji developed romantic feelings for Asako, and they eventually entered into a physical relationship. However, due to her terminal illness, Asako rejected Yuuji’s desire for a long-term future together. Her death had a profound emotional impact on Yuuji and shaped much of his character going forward.
Yuria Haruder (JB)
Yuria Haruder, also known as JB, was Asako’s childhood friend. The two grew up in the same orphanage and later reunited professionally when Yuria became Asako’s handler and manager at Ichigaya. Their dynamic was marked by frequent arguments, largely due to Asako’s tendency to ignore standard protocol. Despite their differences, Yuria deeply cared for Asako and was significantly affected by her passing. Following Asako’s death, JB assumed guardianship of Yuuji in her friend’s stead.
Etymology
The given name Asako (麻子) is composed of the kanji 麻 (asa), meaning “hemp,” and 子 (ko), meaning “child.” The name can be interpreted as “child of hemp,” a traditional name element with strong cultural roots in Japan.
Her surname, Kusakabe (日下部), combines 日 (hi or nichi), meaning “sun” or “day”; 下 (shita or ka), meaning “under” or “below”; and 部 (bu or be), meaning “section” or “department.” While the individual kanji meanings are symbolic, the surname itself is a fairly traditional Japanese family name.
