Asahi Kōbe (神戸 あさひ, Kōbe Asahi) is one of the main characters in the anime and manga series Happy Sugar Life. He is the older brother of Shio Kōbe and is devoted to finding her after their separation, driven by a desire to reunite their fractured family. Asahi tirelessly searches the city, printing and distributing missing person posters, and often sleeps beneath a park bench at night during his quest to locate his sister.
Personality

Appearance in Manga
Asahi Kōbe is kind-hearted, devoted, and deeply protective of his family. As a child, he was quiet, well-behaved, and supportive, doing his best to provide both emotional and physical support to his mother. When Shio was born, Asahi saw her as a beacon of hope and encouraged his mother to stay strong for her sake. His love and selflessness were evident in his decision to urge his mother to flee with Shio while he remained behind with their abusive father to prevent pursuit.
Asahi’s experiences with his father’s extreme abuse left him distrustful of adults and instilled in him a deep-seated anger that sometimes manifests as rage, particularly in connection to his search for Shio. Despite this, Asahi desires nothing more than to reunite with his family and live a peaceful life. Unlike Satō Matsuzaka, he avoids harming others to achieve his goals, only resorting to violence when someone he cares about is grievously harmed such as when he loses control after discovering Satō’s involvement with Shio following Shōko Hida’s death.
Appearance
Asahi Kōbe has short, dark purple hair and matching dark purple eyes, though much of his hair is often hidden beneath his hooded jacket. His jacket features a dark green hood that transitions to black, with bold white vertical stripes running down its length. The sleeves are rolled up just below his elbows, revealing red fabric underneath. He pairs this with a light blue scarf, a white shirt with two black stripes, long black pants, and red sneakers.
Asahi’s face is marked by three bandages: a large square one on his right cheek and two smaller strips on his left cheek. Because he frequently sleeps outdoors in the park during his search for Shio, his appearance is often disheveled and dirty.
Although some people describe his eyes as having an “evil look,” Shōko Hida, upon meeting him, remarked that while he appeared rough or rugged at first glance, she found his face to be “cute.”
Background
Asahi Kōbe was born as a result of his mother, Yūna Kōbe, being raped. Raised solely by his mother, Asahi’s early years were marked by hardship, but he grew up as a polite, obedient, and undemanding child. Despite his mother’s worries that she was not doing enough for him, Asahi appreciated her care and never resented their difficult circumstances. He often played alone at the park, and his grandmother visited him several times during his early childhood.
During Shichi-Go-San, Asahi’s father returned home for the first time, having been compelled to do so by his own father. That same day, tragedy struck when Asahi’s grandparents died in a car accident. His father, rather than mourning the loss, was overjoyed and took their inheritance money before abandoning the family once again. Four years later, after spending all the money, he returned, subjecting both Asahi and Yūna to physical and emotional abuse, blaming Yūna for their poverty.
Shio Kōbe’s birth brought renewed hope to Asahi and his mother. Wanting to protect Shio, Asahi urged Yūna to flee with the baby while he stayed behind to divert their father’s attention. Although Yūna wept and apologized for leaving him, Asahi insisted, wanting Shio their “Moon” to be safe and promising to reunite with them one day.
For the next five years, Asahi endured brutal abuse from his father, who inflicted various tortures, including tearing off his fingernails, and forcing him to run errands for alcohol and food. Eventually, his father died from alcohol poisoning. Overjoyed at his freedom, Asahi returned to search for his mother, only to find that it was too late she and Shio were gone. From that moment, Asahi dedicated himself to finding Shio and reuniting what was left of their family.
Relationships
Shio Kōbe
Shio is Asahi’s beloved younger sister. From the moment she was born, Asahi and their mother vowed to protect her, seeing her as a symbol of hope. After Yūna abandoned Shio, Asahi immediately dedicated himself to finding her, considering Shio’s smile as bright and full of promise, like “the moon.” During their eventual confrontation, Asahi pleads with Shio to come home, assuring her that their mother didn’t mean she didn’t need Shio, but rather that Shio didn’t need her. Though Shio regains her memories of life before Satō, she refuses to leave Satō’s side. Following the final tragedy, Asahi hopes to reunite with Shio, unaware that she believes herself to have been reborn as Satō.
Shōko Hida
Asahi meets Shōko when she finds him sleeping beneath a park bench and offers him food. They gradually become friends, with Asahi confiding in her about his family and his search for Shio. Shōko provides emotional support, and Asahi, in turn, comforts her when she expresses guilt over hurting Satō’s feelings, assuring her that only good-hearted people feel remorse.
Taiyō Mitsuboshi
Taiyō initially helps Asahi by saving him from thugs and bringing him to Cure á Cute. However, as Taiyō becomes obsessed with Shio, their relationship deteriorates. Asahi begins to distrust Taiyō, likening him to the untrustworthy adults he despises. Taiyō misleads Asahi, claiming Satō and Shio have already fled and producing Shio’s sock as false proof. Asahi eventually discovers the truth and finds Satō and Shio at the apartment. During the fire, Taiyō calls for help, but Asahi ignores him, unwilling to forgive his deception.
Satō Matsuzaka
Satō first encounters Asahi when Taiyō brings him in after a beating. Recognizing him at once, she nearly attacks him with a crowbar. Asahi’s hatred for Satō grows when he realizes she abducted Shio and intensifies upon learning she killed Shōko. Their final confrontation becomes a desperate struggle over Shio, with Asahi shocked to see Shio protect Satō. After Satō’s death, Asahi hopes to reclaim Shio, but is heartbroken to see the lasting psychological impact Satō left on his sister.
Etymology
The given name Asahi (あさひ) means “morning sun” or “sunrise” in Japanese, symbolizing hope and new beginnings. His surname, Kōbe (神戸), combines the kanji 神 (kō), meaning “god” or “deity,” and 戸 (be), meaning “door.”
