Asahi Azumane

Asahi Azumane (Japanese: 東峰 旭,Azumane Asahi) was a third-year student at Karasuno High and served as the team’s ace and wing spiker for the Boys’ Volleyball Club.

Somewhere along the way, I let myself forget the most simple and natural thing about this game: that I’ll never have to fight alone.
— Asahi Azumane

Appearance

Asahi’s appearance in Anime.

Asahi has long, dark brown hair that he typically wears in a bun at the back of his head, along with dark brown eyes and matching eyebrows. He also sports a small amount of facial scruff on his chin, giving him an appearance that makes him seem older than he is. This, combined with his tall and sturdy build, often makes him appear intimidating, causing some people to hesitate before approaching him.

In Season 2, Asahi is shown wearing his hair in a looser bun, paired with a sports hairband suggested by Kiyoko. However, by the Spring High Nationals arc, he reverts to his signature high bun hairstyle. Due to the animation style change in  Season 4, Asahi’s eyes are depicted as more lidded, giving him a slightly more mature appearance, similar to Ennoshita.

Post-timeskip, Asahi’s hair remains slightly past shoulder length, but he now wears it down. He is also seen wearing red-framed glasses, further adding to his distinct look.

Personality

Despite his intimidating appearance, Asahi is gentle and soft-spoken. He has a hard time accepting his role as Karasuno’s ace, as he initially doesn’t see himself fitting the title. Known for having a “Glass Heart,” Asahi is sensitive to what others say about him, often taking their words to heart, which can cause him to feel discouraged. This vulnerability is evident early on when he leaves the team after Karasuno’s loss to Date Tech, believing he had let everyone down, though his teammates didn’t share this view.

Upon returning to the team, Asahi discovers that his love for volleyball is stronger than his self-doubt. With the support of his teammates, he eventually comes to embrace his role as the ace. While Daichi often teases him for lacking an “ace-like presence,” Asahi gradually gains self-confidence. Though he still struggles with insecurity and can be overly cautious at times, he later asserts that he has no intention of giving up his position as Karasuno’s ace, showcasing his growth since the beginning of the series.

Background

Asahi attended Seikoudai Junior High, where he played as a wing spiker. Even before joining Karasuno, he had already built a reputation for spiking with the power of a high school player.

As Karasuno’s ace, Asahi had a moment where he struggled with his role. During a match against Date Tech in his second year, all of his spikes were blocked, leading Asahi to feel like he had let his team down. He blamed himself for the team’s loss and began to question his abilities. One night, as the team was closing up the gym, Asahi confronted his teammates, wondering why they hadn’t blamed him for the defeat. This frustrated Nishinoya, who told him that while he wouldn’t be upset if Asahi couldn’t score, he wouldn’t forgive him for giving up so easily. During the heated argument, Nishinoya pushed Asahi, causing him to step on and break a broom, which still remains in the storage room as a reminder.

The next day, Asahi didn’t show up for practice. When Nishinoya approached him at his classroom, they got into another argument. This time, Nishinoya accidentally broke a vase outside the vice principal’s office, which led to his suspension from school for a week and a month-long break from volleyball. Feeling responsible, Asahi decided to leave the team.

However, a month later, after persistent efforts from Hinata and Kageyama, especially Hinata, Asahi rejoined the team. Since then, he has fully embraced his role as Karasuno’s ace.

Statistics

Asahi is Karasuno’s most powerful attacker, renowned for his ability to deliver spikes that can overwhelm even the toughest defenders. His teammates often rely on him to score when faced with multiple blockers, and his strongest spikes are achieved from high tosses placed slightly away from the net. As Daichi famously said, “If you want to stop our ace, you’ll have to bring an iron wall!” Asahi has proven capable of breaking through triple blocks, sending the ball hard enough to create waterfall shots, and spiking the ball into the spectator area with tremendous force. Notably, he eventually overcomes Date Tech’s formidable iron wall.

Beyond his offensive prowess, Asahi is also skilled in defense, frequently joining Daichi and Nishinoya in receiving formations. When paired with Tsukishima, he plays a crucial role in Karasuno’s blocking strategy. Additionally, Asahi is one of Karasuno’s strongest servers, second only to Kageyama. He has been known to hit multiple service aces in a match. Both Atsumu and Asahi himself have noted that he typically starts a match at around 70% power, gradually increasing his serve and spike strength as the game progresses, reaching 100% by the match’s end.

Height and Reach (as of mid-November)::
  • Fingertip Height: 242 cm
  • Jumping Reach: 333 cm (spike) / 310 cm (block)

Skills

Back Row Attack: After Karasuno’s first practice match against Nekoma, Asahi learned to execute a back row attack. This move is often used in conjunction with Hinata acting as a decoy, drawing blockers away to create an opening for Asahi to score. Asahi later improves this skill by synchronizing with Nishinoya’s libero toss, making the attack even more effective.

Asahi’s jump service.

Jump Serve: Asahi developed his jump serve during the Summer Training Camp, and it quickly became a valuable asset. His serve is noted for its strong course, with his power and control increasing over time, allowing him to target difficult spots near the boundary lines. He frequently scores service aces and has been recognized as having one of the best serves on the team, second only to Kageyama. With guidance from Coach Ukai, Asahi uses a technique to reduce stress before serving, which improves his accuracy. He typically starts matches at about 70% power and increases both strength and precision as the game progresses, reaching full power towards the end.

Delayed Spike: Asahi’s delayed spike is a powerful move where he extends his time in midair to throw off the blockers’ timing. He spikes only after the blockers have started descending, often resulting in a wipe that sends the ball ricocheting off the blockers and into the stands. Sugawara dubbed this move the “Block Crusher,” and it has proven effective against teams like Date Tech, Nekoma, and Inarizaki.

Feint:While not used frequently, Asahi can perform a feint shot, surprising opponents by tapping the ball just over the blockers. Though first done accidentally in the match against Inarizaki, Asahi has since used this technique intentionally in matches against teams like Nekoma and Kamomedai.

Asahi’s receives.

Receives: As a wing spiker, Asahi is adept at making serve and spike receives. He is often relied upon to handle powerful attacks from opponents, such as Oikawa’s serves, and does everything he can to keep the ball in play, showing solid defensive skills.

Blocking: With his height and strong build, Asahi is a key blocker for Karasuno. He is capable of getting both deflections and stuff blocks. During Karasuno’s match against Shiratorizawa, Asahi followed Tsukishima’s lead for timing blocks against Ushijima, even taking over the lead when Tsukishima was temporarily removed from the game.

Relationships

Karasuno High

Yū Nishinoya
Asahi has a close yet sometimes complicated relationship with Nishinoya. As Karasuno’s ace, Asahi feels heavily relied on by the libero, and this led to his sense of guilt after their loss to Date Tech. Asahi believed he had let Nishinoya down the most, making him hesitant to return to the team. However, he eventually rejoined with the goal of regaining Nishinoya’s trust. During the Interhigh, Asahi redeemed himself, particularly in their rematch against Date Tech, restoring their friendship to a more lighthearted and stable dynamic. Asahi deeply values Nishinoya’s skills and honesty and won’t hesitate to offer support when Nishinoya needs it. Later, Asahi even confided in Nishinoya about his post-graduation plans, and after the timeskip, the two remain in touch, with Asahi joining Nishinoya on his travels.

Kōshi Sugawara
Asahi and Sugawara have known each other since their first year in high school, and their close bond translates to excellent teamwork. They trust each other’s abilities, particularly during matches, where Sugawara’s sets often complement Asahi’s spikes. After the match against Date Tech, Asahi feared that he had let Sugawara down, but their friendship endured, with Sugawara helping Asahi regain confidence. They continue to be close, even after high school, with Sugawara often teasing Asahi when he shows signs of nervousness or self-doubt.

Daichi Sawamura
Asahi and Daichi first became friends upon joining Karasuno’s volleyball team and have been close ever since. Together, they worked hard to improve their abilities and revive Karasuno’s former glory. Despite Asahi’s temporary departure from the team, which he feared upset Daichi the most, their relationship remained strong. Asahi respects Daichi immensely, though he admits to being a bit fearful of the captain when he’s angry.

Shōyō Hinata
Hinata played a key role in encouraging Asahi to return to the team, offering unwavering support and admiration. At first, Asahi was nervous about the attention he received from Hinata as the ace, but he quickly realized it was well-meaning. In return, Asahi helped Hinata embrace his role as the decoy and supported his efforts during matches. While Asahi occasionally feels a tinge of anxiety over Hinata’s rapid improvement and desire to become the ace, he chooses to use it as motivation to push himself to become better.
